On Sept. 20, 1965, the paid attendance at the Met was 547 for a makeup game between the Athletics and Twins. The weather conditions weren’t exactly ideal: 52 degrees and drizzle, but the pitching matchup featured two of the American League’s best: Minnesota’s Jim “Mudcat” Grant versus K.C.’s Jim “Catfish” Hunter. The Twins, a team headed for its first World Series in Minnesota, lost the game, 8-2.

A couple surprising things about that answer. One, it was late in the 1965 season, as the team was on its way to its first World Series. You'd think interest would have been higher, meaningless game or not. Two, Mudcat Grant vs. Catfish Hunter. That would be a cool pitching matchup.

How could paid attendance be that low? Did season ticket holders not get counted in totals back then?

SoMnFan -> RE: Baseball Trivia (9/20/2012 11:44:09 AM)

Mind boggling
Headed to the WS
Two very good pitchers
Strange indeed

Tells you what a different time it was ....
Ppl were farming, school was in, life was simpler. I was four. SO don't blame me.
They didn't let me drive until I was eight, or Ida been there.

My mother was pregnant at the time...with my oldest sister.  I came along after my second sister about 5 years or so later.

Boyd Tesch -> RE: Baseball Trivia (9/20/2012 6:52:02 PM)

I think it has been in the past 20 years, MLB went from actual attendance to paid attendance so the 65 game was not paid attendance but actual gate numbers

Wonder if Calvin ask that day, "Why did I move this team to Minnesota again?"

My guess is really lousy weather that day.

Maybe they thought that Sept callups Florimon and Escobar would be the MI's fielding behind Mudcat that day.

OK, my girlfriend bought me a baseball trivia book and the questions are not brutally hard, so lets see who can get the answers right.

We'll try Jeapordy style.  The first answer is NO, what's the question?

. . . OK, that's not going to work.

SHARING AN AT BAT
Casey Stengel is playing with his batting order and alternating Phil Rizzuto and Billy Martin in the number one and number eight sopots.  On Friday, he had Martin batting first and Rizzuto eighth.  On Saturday, Martin steps into the batter's box to begin the game at Briggs Stadium in Detroit.  Tiger pitcher Hal Newhouser runs a count of no balls and two strikes on Martin before Rizzuto realizes he is the named lead off batter for the Yankees for this game.  The "Scooter" rushes up and takes Martin's place in the batter's box.  On Newhouser's next pitch Rizzuto swings and misses.

Is anyone called out for batting out of order here?

Who is charged with the strikeout?

You have a girlfriend?

Please bring these trivia questions back. They were a lot of fun.

And you could have purchased a ticket for $2 or $3.[:-]

It's gotta be some bitterly cold game.  I'll bet it was in the 3,000's.  3,286.

Now I'm goting to look it up.

YOu might go under that. I was at a game at Shea Stadium that had less. I also remember a game in Oakland years ago where they had under 1,000. I will guess sometime in the early 80's probably around 2,200 in attendance. Maybe against Seattle?

BomboStahoviac -> RE: Baseball Trivia (10/5/2012 9:01:41 PM)

Duh~!

I didn't know the answer was given[;)]

That would be lower than what I thought was the lowest for a ML game in the modern era
