WOW Nice for the Lynx. I think the Sky who are having a good season read the writing on the wall. Fowles was not going to come back. Erika de Souza will certainly bolster their team this season and in the future. I would not be surprised at all if Fowles and de Souza are matching up in the WNBA finals. Amazing get for the Lynx. Wasn't Fowles a college teammate of Augustus?

One thing confuses me here? Why did Fowles want out of Chicago so bad. That team is looking good and with her they would be a title contender.

I've never heard any specifics. Just that her relationship with the organization has been getting worse and worse over the last couple of years to the point that she refused to play for them this year.

Such a great trade. To be able to add a legit star without giving up one of our own is a total win.

I like Dantas a lot, but I'm not sure she's ever more than a really good complimentary player. Gray could barely get on the floor. And while its a very good draft coming, up, its going to be at (or dam near) the bottom of the 1st round. It might only be a spot or two higher than the pick we got for Wright.

Oh, GIGANTIC win. In BBall, it's almost always about who gets the best player, and Fowles is it.

We stole her. We got an All-NBA and DPOTY caliber player for basically spare parts.

Well technically we got DeSousa for spare parts. We got Fowles for DeSousa. Chicago made a nice gain out of this too. They added DeSousa for somebody who was not playing and forcing their hand. Chicago has been having a good year without Fowles and DeSousa will probably make them that much better.

The draft pick is nice too. Next year is supposed to be a very deep draft.

People say that but I don't find it much deeper then this past season. Kind of top heavy again after about 5 Players.

When both are healthy IMO Monica is easily a better player than Montgomery. I wonder if this means that Monica simply won't be coming back this season at all and the Lynx decided to overpay to get the help this year.

Its been a while so catching up
Monnie is really going to be missed . Cool person and yes better then Montgomery. The knee issues have been over the last year. They haven't been major, reconstructive surgeries so there is a good possibility she'll get back to picking up where she was 2 season ago could be good.Seattle's head coach is a UVa alum as is Monnie (both coached by a WCBB legend) so knows what her game is about. From what I understand its likely she could play late Aug/early Sept if rehab goes well. The Lynx end the season with a Home & away vs. Seattle so it would be nice to see her back at TC.

As for Monty, been there done that when she played here as a rookie back in 2009. Beyond the numbers, she can put up lots of shots (more then Monica would take) to get points. That free wheeling style can come in handy at times but too often it drives one nuts. She really hasn't changed that much. Monnie was also taller & a MUCH better defender then Monty.

As todays other trades shows, yes this 1st trade was a need in the short team, with the injury situation, to win it all NOW in this window.

Also of note here: Montgomery is a FA at the end of this season. She's an east coast kid & I'm thinking she'd rather be on an eastern team & was not likely to re-sign with Seattle & seeing as the aren't title contenders, trading her was easy. Monica has another yr left on her contract and I can see, once she's healthy, that the Storm are a team/area she wouldn't mind re-signing with. And at 27 could still pay dividends for the Storm down the road.

My overall take:

The last wk has been very bittersweet. I liked all the players (youth) we've traded. Healthy the Lynx were still the league favorite without Fowels. Other teams in the league seem to have to talent on paper but have issues translating it to games. ATL was one of them. Seems DeSousa while playing, didn't have interest in staying in ATL so looks like she'll be happy to go to Chi were there is another Brazilian Natl team member playing well for the Sky.

In the short term, all the trades have been good for the Lynx. I keeps the window open 1 maybe 2 more years beyond this one. So I'll build up to enjoying it.

But the reality is at season end, there will be little to back up the "All Star" starting line-up of 2015. So the real magic & creativity will need to show up in the front office over the next 2 season. Because :

2010 : Lynx 1st rnd pick of Monica Wright - Traded
2011 : Lynx 1sr rnd pick Got Maya, dumped Amber Harris the bounus 1st rnd pick
2012 : Lynx 1st rnd pick Damiris Dantas- Traded and bounus pick 1st rnd pick Dev Peters is a RFA at seasons end
2013 : Got nothing to show for this class - all gone
2014 : Lynx 1st rnd pick Trisha Liston, the rest gone
2015 : Lynx traded 1st rnd pick - got Anna Cruz & Rashonda Gray now Traded
2016 : Traded 1st rnd pick & have three 2nd rnd pick

I'm going to assume the team will sign Sylvia Fowles to a multi yr deal Tues.
So free agents I believe at season end are Brunson, Jones, Peters & Montgomery. Couple with Cruz likely staying in Spain to try to help her Nat'l team qualify for the Olympics, only players under contract are the Big3, Liston & maybe Fowles.

Developing players hasn't been in Reeves plans and there is nothing left to develop other then Liston who could be replaced and Peters who I fear is going to get fewer mins in favor of giving Jones more mins with Fowles coming in. So they better win it all this season. Get Brunson that 4th ring & the 3rd title for the franchise because who knows what next yr will bring.

Hate losing Damiris Dantas & I think Gray has potential. Both hopefully will get more PT in ATL. But yes at 6-6 Big Syl will come in handy especially on the defensive end which will help push the offense. I'd like to see a little less driving & more play making by Whay to help keep better spacing on the floor to make it easier to drive, for the shooters to shot & for us to now have a true low post game inside. There will be some adjusting but by season end, I'd like to hope the kinks will be worked out so they will be primed for the play-offs.

So this is what the other side feels like to be "that" team people want to play for.

I will agree that were it not for the injury situation, the Lynx would not make this deal. Wright is the better defender and more versatile player. While Montgomery can jack it up a bit the numbers show that she is actually a more efficient offensive player than Wright. With Whalen getting older, there is a need for another PG that can provide some offense. I'm also a little more concerned about Wright's injuries than some. While there haven't been any reconstructions, these clean up operations can indicate that some deterioration going on.

It looks like all five of the Lynx starters (when healthy) are all star or near all star quality.

All 5 of them are.

Whalen: 5× WNBA All-Star (2006, 2011, 2013–2015)
Augustus: 6× WNBA All-Star (2006–2007, 2011, 2013–2015)
Moore: 4× WNBA All-Star (2011, 2013–2015)
Brunson: 3× WNBA All-Star (2007, 2011, 2013)
Fowles: 3× WNBA All-Star (2009, 2011, 2013)

The Lynx have amazing talent. I do think in fairness it is much easier to make a WNBA all star team than and NBA all star team simply because there hare less than half as many players.

Good point. We suffered with poorer WNBA teams for such a long time, but it's been much better for the past decade or so. Let's hope that the men will follow suit, now.

True that re Wright's knees. Prior to last year she had no history of any knee issues so I'm just hoping the best for her.

I don't look at Montgomery as the teams PG of the future, just not feeling it. She just doesn't have the ability to run a team of this caliber on the regular, so I see Reeve hoping she can find someone who can understudy while Whalen is still around. PG help will continue to be an issue till we get lucky somewhere along the way.

Is free agency as active in the WNBA as it is in the NBA? It seems as though it is not.

I don't know whether to be offended or flattered ... jk

It looks like four of the Lynx starters are all star or near all star quality. Who is the other starter?

All 5 of them are.

Whalen: 5× WNBA All-Star (2006, 2011, 2013–2015)
Augustus: 6× WNBA All-Star (2006–2007, 2011, 2013–2015)
Moore: 4× WNBA All-Star (2011, 2013–2015)
Brunson: 3× WNBA All-Star (2007, 2011, 2013)
Fowles: 3× WNBA All-Star (2009, 2011, 2013)

The Lynx have amazing talent. I do think in fairness it is much easier to make a WNBA all star team than and NBA all star team simply because there hare less than half as many players.

Very true. Side note on the Olympic babble (which I'm tired of) If not for King Geno being the coach, Brunson should have been on that team over Jones and/or another UConn player but such is life ... just me
Brunson has pro rings and is adding to the WNBA record books so its all good

I'm curious about something. Does it almost seem unfair the Lynx adding Fowles. Assuming she can play like she used to we should now be just about unbeatable.

Get this. The Lynx had an open roster spot after the trade so they signed Shae Kelly. A little surprised they go after the next to last pick from this years draft. She must have made a good impression in preseason.

Besides being 6'6" and strong Sylvia Fowles shows great body control. Check out these highlights.

What really impresses me is the way she is totally under control while blocking shots. Doesn't get herself into foul trouble.
