Just kick it away to the five yard line. A return would have taken a minimum of 5-7 seconds. Even if the guy runs it back to the 40, KC would have only had 6-8 seconds, max, to get into field goal range (maybe less).
The second blunder happened when KC had the ball at the 47 with eight seconds left. Buffalo should have just tackled all of the receivers five yards downfield before they could even go out for a pass. At a minimum it would take 4-5 seconds to run the play and pass interference is a spot foul, which would have given KC the ball just past the 50 with 2-3 seconds remaining on the clock. At a minimum, Butker would have been looking at a 65-yarder or so to tie the game or Mahomes would have had to throw a hail Mary.
Those were head coaching blunders. You gotta know the rules and understand how to use them to your advantage.
