Status: offline 		Even though I don't remember seeing him play much, Fran is the reason I am a Viking fan so I would have to give him the nod as my favorite. As far as players I have gotten to see on a week in week out basis, I would have to say Cris Carter and John Randle.

Stanford man, smart, tough, mobile. He gave all that day and wasn't the same after. We had a nice run of Siemon/Studwell/DelRio, liked 'em all. Nice to see the linebacking corps is becoming a strength again on this squad.

Status: offline 		Favorites 1. Cris Carter - Made catches no one else could make, and was a beast blocking. If they threw the ball to him 10+ times, the Vikes won. 2. John Randle - In his prime, just plain scary. Got in opponents heads and double teams were worthless in stopping him. 3. Joey Browner - An animal, pure intimidation. You did not f with Joey Browner. 4. Hank Thomas - Personal favorite of mine. Taught Johnny Randle everything he knew, revolutionized the NT position, got in the gaps quicker than anyone and allowed guys like Doleman, Millard and even Noga to flourish by constantly forcing double teams. 5. Sammy White - Circus catch extrodinaire. Would catch anything near him, made about a million "laid out" catches. Honorable mention - Matt Blair - tough as nails tackler, and the best special teams "blocker".... EVER. Would jump up (ok, with some help) and stuff field goals almost every other game (seemed like :D )

Robert Smith was the first legit RB of the Viking modern era (with apologies to Ted Brown, Alfred Anderson and Rick Fenney) Least Favorites Carl Lee-Burnt toast Rick Danmeier- Nothing over 47 yards

Status: offline 		Fran Tarkenton on Offense. He had the most amazing scrambles and if you blitzed him he would make you pay. Carl Eller on Defense. Page was probably better but I liked Eller. Bud Grant is my favorite Viking character of all time. I love stories like how the first thing he did at the first practice was to teach the players how to stand for the national anthem or that they didn't need heaters on the sidelines because he wanted the players to prefer being on the field running around vs. off the field huddling around the heaters, plus it used to psyche out the other team.

Status: offline 		Hello All: Not sure if this is the right place for this post but thought I would share this with the group. I am usually on the road but when not traveling, I work from my home office. About half an hour ago I was sitting in the office working when the door bell rang. I wasn't expecting anyone so I was wondering who it could be. I answered the door and saw a man with some documents in his hand. I thought they probably wanted to sell something though the guy did look vaguely familiar. He explained that he was basically driving around looking for input on condos and condo development. I suppose he saw me from the window and decided to stop and talk. Apparently he is interested in developing some condos in Excelsior and wanted people's opinions on what they like or don't like about their place. I chatted with him for a while and gave him some suggestions about things I would look for. I was wearing a Gophers t-shirt so he asked what I thought of the team's chances. I told him that this year will probably be up and down (mostly down) but hopefully they will start to improve and get some good kids especially with the new stadium on the horizon. Then we started talking about the Vikings. We were both of the opinion that the Vikings are difficult to figure out because of the offense. No one knows if it was the offensive schemes or personnel or a combination of both that resulted in the dismal performance last year. We talked about stadiums and other general stuff and how the Vikings do a lot for the community. We touched on Moss and how he should not have been traded. He also thought that both Moss and Culpepper needed to suck it up and play together and indicated that the media usually helps screw things up (I agreed). Then when he was ready to head off, he thanked me for my time and said, I'm Eddie McDaniel, I used to play a little with the boys! I felt like such an idiot! I told him that no wonder he looked so familiar! We chatted for a little while more and I gave him my business card if he had additional questions. He was very friendly, down to earth and great fun to talk with. He said he'll drop me an email and will pass on tickets as he gets them all the time from the 'boys' and he usually doesn't know who to give them to. A very cool experience, indeed! I never expect a Vikings player (or ex-player) to just show up at my place! Good thing I was at home... Zubair

Status: offline 		You lucky guy Zubair! He has an interesting way of getting input on condos. Sounds like he has some investment ideas and wants to find out the real deal from people actually living in them. It's cool that you didn't recognize him right away because then you could carry on a normal conversation without being influenced by a desire to impress him.

He should be able to get some good insight which will definitely help his development plans. I still think his year (forget if it was 6 or 97 now, hard to believe it's a decade ago now) was the best linebacker season by a man in purple ever. He had something like 21 stuffs, and was just all over the field. He switched over from his best position to MLB simply because we had knuckleheads who couldn't figure anything out. And yet he never complained, never whined, always brought his lunch bucket and went to work. Probably why he said that about Daunte and Moss. He was also hilarious, gave great interviews, and was great to the fans.

 Fran Tarkington......There was and is no better QB in Viking History! Im a big Chuck Forman guy and although Joey B could make a person blow snot bubbles....I was a big Paul Kraus and Carl Lee fan. How about Freddy Cox??? :lol:

Status: offline 		That's an awesome story about Eddie Mac. The only Viking I have ever met in person is Justice Page. When I worked at Super America, he would come in from time to time. The first time he came in while I was working, I didn't recognize him. After he left, my boss asked if I knew who that was, I said no, and he told me. The next time he came in was shortly after a controversial supreme court decision, and we chatted about it a bit. I told him I thought he made the right call and told him why. He said, "That's exactly what I thought." He also recommended Acme deli to me. He spoke a year or two later at my now sister-in-law's graduation from Macalester (home of the second worst football team of all time!), and I have seen him in my neighborhood. When my wife and I were planning our wedding, we met with the guy who decorated our cakes at A Piece of Cake on Selby. While we were looking over selections and tasting cakes, in pulls a tan Mini Cooper. Who should get out other than the Justice himself. He is a very tall man, and a wealthy one at that, and he drives a Mini! Not what I was expecting. Anyway, I would have to say he's my favorite Viking, if for no other reason than what he has done since he left football. Is there a more accomplished NFL alum? I don't know, but I can't think of any. Also, I absolutely LOVED Robert Griffith. A guy smaller than me, and one of the hardest hitters in the league for years. Gotta love that.

Gotta love that.[/quote] Excellent choices. To answer your question, No, no player has accomplished more post-career than Alan. Has refused to take no for an answer his whole life. A true renaissance man, imo. Should have stayed a Viking his whole career, those years in a black uni hurt. And they fell in love with him in Chicago as well.

And they fell in love with him in Chicago as well.[/quote] A quick read shows that Byron White played a couple years with Pittsburgh and Detroit in the NFL before becoming a US Supreme court justice. So, maybe not quite the most successful post-NFL career, but he is close to the top.

Status: offline 		Not at the moment. According to his wikipedia entry, he ran for governor in 2002, resigning his house seat, and lost the election. Besides, he was only a congressman. I'd rank Supreme Court Justice higher, even if it's at the state level. Really, I would generally rate taxi drivers higher than congressmen.
