Sad to see Carl Eller in the news again for the wrong reasons.
Hopefully it ends well. Was hoping he'd find peace in his life, a great Viking and a good man inside.
Shared a story once with Steve Lentz about big Carl.
My brother and his wife started their family in 1979 with a rough first pregnancy. She had twins, one of which died at birth, the other was tiny (premature), probably less than a couple pounds. Little dude fought for his life for months at the hospitals at the U (wonderful place). My family pretty much lived there for months while the little guy got stronger and eventually became "normal". He's a strapping young man with kids of his own now.
Anyway, we finally get him out of the incubator and can handle him every day. one day we turn around and there's this huge guy coming down the hallway and into our room. My mouth dropped. It was Carl Eller. he loved his ties to the U and we were told by the nurses that he was always coming thru and trying to cheer up kids and parents in the U hospitals. I was a Viking fanatic from Day One. To see one of my heroes in person (I was 18) was awesome. He was larger than life. He came in and spent a long time with us, he was incredibly friendly and warm. He asked if he could hold the baby almost immediately.
At that point he almost fit in one of Carl's big hands. he sat down with him in the chair and cooed and baby-talked to him for the longest time. It was one of the coolest things I had ever seen. We took lots of pictures and hold them dear. He had already had some run-ins with the law by then, but we saw only the good in him.
He left an incredible impression on our whole family. He was so calm and caring and warm to us, like he had known us forever. And he taught me as a young man how to not judge people until you got to know them. I wish him the best.

Great story Scott.  It's kind of like the Randy Moss discussions, where his infractions were balanced against his amazing charitable (yet quiet) good works.

Carl Eller sounds like someone with a very big heart, but perhaps a few demons he keeps battling.  I've met him at a couple of autograph sessions and he seems sincerely kind and friendly.  I wish him the best.

Not only does that put my trivial little stories in perspective, but that is the best Viking story I have ever heard.

Thanks Pete.
It's a story I'm glad to have been a part of.
Your stories and insight are terrific. Keep 'em coming.
There's a lot of good people on here that are fun to share things with.
We seem to have a common goal. I really want to see what happens when we finally win the Big One here.
Sorry to borrow a corny line, but if we do, then I can rest in peace.
1961 to now has been a good run. We need the carrot now. We've earned it.

Fantastic story, Scott. (I don't know why it's taken me over 6 months to find it!) I share your "drive to survive" long enough to see two things:

1. The Vikes return to their outdoors & natural home, thus regaining their true identity after what will have been a 30+ year absence. Staggers me to say that.

2. The Vikes win a Super Bowl, for this proud franchise's redemption. The Grant-led teams deserve that as much as the current guys. Those who were blessed to have seen them play, to see how they carried themselves on and off the field, will identify with this sentiment. They were winners...champions. They just need that crown.

Favorite Vike: Francis Asbury Tarkenton, #10. No one else has really come close. Favorite Twin: Harmon Killebrew, #3. Same orbit with Sir Francis, to me. Wow were we lucky!

I can't name just one all time favorite.

I never saw Fran play live.

Joey Browner,
Keith Millard
Chris Doleman
Randy Moss
Cris Carter
John Randle
Randall McDaniel

and now AD and Percy may endear themselves onto that list very soon.

As a kid of the 80s, how can you already put Percy ahead of Anthony Carter? That makes NO SENSE to me. May the AC Slant live forever!

Doesn't have to be the best player to be your "favorite." Tommy Kramer is my favorite but he was hardly the best player. But he was a Viking through and through. Fought for his boys and despised the opponent.

I remember in Kramer's rookie season when he came into the game against the 49ers in the fourth quarter with the Vikes down 24-7. The Vikes won the game on a long pass to Sammy White, 28-27.

In no particular order: Page-redefined defensive linemen, Browner-best pure tackler imo, Sammie White-great hands, Moss-also great hands, and speed, Tarkenton-never gave up, Kapp-the grit, AC-hands and speed, CC-hands, feet, and speed, Randle-THE intimidator, Foreman-made defenders get out of his way, AP-fast and demanding, Kramer-the original TK-loved his grit too, Millard-dominant until he let his ego interrupt, Doleman-always attacking.

I remember that game, he threw for 200+ yards and 3 TDs in 10 minutes.

One of the guys I liked was Fred McNeill. He was drafted out of UCLA in the same Draft as Matt Blair. Fred was the 1st-rounder and Blair (4th rounder) turned out to be the better LB but Fred was cool and was the first ever Vike I got an autograph from in Mankato during training camp when I was a little kid. That same day I also got an autograph from a rookie RB named Ike Spencer from Utah. Ike did not makethe team.

I'm watching the MIN-MIA SB right now. Two brutal penalties really changed the outcome of that game... and of course the Reed fumble.

And that Tarkenton was one tough SOB. His TD was a testament to his toughness. He got the crap beaten out of him on that run.

Overall though, I would have to credit MIA's strategy on offense. Cross-blocking and misdirection took our DL out of that game.

Similar to KC, they outcoached us... sad to say.

Notice that guy got bounced off youtube, Sammy ?

You have to keep NFL stuff off youtube... they'll find you and shut you down.

Vimeo is better, but just in case I protect them with a password.
