spotrac lists the value of waynes and alexander as $8.5/yr each...i'd keep waynes for that price....

waynes - hughes - hill - 2nd rounder - boyd - 6th rounder

PFF has them at Waynes for $7.5 and Mac for $4.5. I'd still keep neither.

So Griffen opted out of his renegotiated contract with the Vikes, there must be some expectation that we will offer him more $? How could it be otherwise?

Guarantees are as important as dollar amount, Griff's remaining contract had zero in guarantees.

i think that spielman has been in touch with griffen's agent and told them that the existing deal is not going to happen, you can break it our we can break it...griffen broke it - he saves face and puts other teams on notice that i'm no cheap...also, now we don't have pressure to make any roster moves because we're already under the cap....

neither?...at those numbers i'd keep booth...spotrac has byron jones at $14m...it will be interesting to see where we go at cb and fs this offseason....

imo, in free agency we need a top tier left guard and d-tackle...then a solid cb and fs....

draft: d-tackle, right tackle, cb, fs, wr....

So we have two elite players at the unimportant position and hot smelly garbage at CB and a weak interior D-Line. Brilliant! So I guess the important spots are whatever Kendricks, Hunter, and Griffen were playing?

Zimmer didn't say that safety wasn't needed in a defense, he said that it was the most important, he's right, it isn't. The defensive line, the corners, LB's, then safeties would probably be the way he see's it. All the positions have their responsibilities, but two years ago when we had Linval and Richardson playing in the middle and Hunter and Griff/Weatherly playing on the outside, the defense was top five, without a solid interior d-line, we slipped. True, Rhodes had a better season in 2017, but we had Sendejo and Smith back there and were pretty solid, I think Sendejo had like 4 picks.

I love Harris, liked him since the day we got him, but if he need $13 million to play next to my guy who makes $11 million, I'm going to have to pass on that.

Sendejo isn't Harris, Harris is going to get paid, he's an undrafted FA that proved he belongs in the league, good for him. We can get by with Sendejo and Smith and whomever else they bring in, safety isn't our top five of concerns. (OL,DB,DL,WR3/2,QB would be top five in my estimation)

I believe if they sign Griff, that probably means LJ is gone. Unless they work out a restructure for LJ similar to the one Griff will probably get, give these guys a bunch of money up front, sign four year deals that they will never see with the largest cap hits at the back of the deal, maybe that works. LJ had a definite decline last year, not sure what we would get from him, Zimmer did say it's a young mans game, that had to mean something .

OK so I went ahead and put together my 53-man-roster for 2020. This is more of a discussion piece than a prediction or a 'what should happen' kind of thing. I've made a LOT of assumptions and signed some contracts that might not be big enough. I also went ahead and drafted all our picks, made some cuts, signed some free agents, and restructured some of our guys. I'm also still $8 million over the cap so there will still need to be at least one change. I didn't restructure Rieff and we might be able to get under the cap just with that alone. Either that or one of the big ticket free agents will have to go. Here's the roster. I used the existing cap hit for the players that are currently under contract. After the roster I laid out what the new contracts look like. Some or maybe all of this might be unrealistic and that's fine. It's a conversation piece. All contracts are in millions

Cousins $21
#205 Draft pick Shea Patterson $.6

Diggs $14.5
Thielen $12.7
Free agent Breshard Perryman $7
Bisi Johnson $.6
#122 Draft pick Trishton Jackson $.7

Cook $2
Mattison $.8
Boone $.66
Some random garbage $.63

Rudolph $9.5
Irv $1.3
Morgan $.75
Conklin $.73

Ham $1

Kendricks $10
Barr $12.7
Wilson $2.9 Second round tender
Gedeon $.9
Hercules $.660

Hunter $14.5
#58 Draft pick Kenny Wilekes $1
Odenbingo $.66
Yarbrough $.66

O'Neil $1.2
Rieff $13.2
Collins $.66
Udoh $.63
Dozier $800 One year deal

Smith $6
Harris $7
Kearse $1
Random garbage $.63

Free agent DJ Reader $9
#25 Draft pick Justin Madubuike $2.5
Stephen $5
Jaleel $.9
Holmes $.8
Watts $.63

Free agent Chris Harris $8
Hughes $2.7
Mac Alexander $3
Hill $.66
Boyd $361

Bradbury $3

Kline $6
#89 Draft Pick Logan Strasberg $.8
Samia $.8
7th rounder $.5

Colquitt $3
Bailey $2
Cutting $.6

I cut Linval, Rhodes, and Elflein. I took guesses on Colquitt, Bailey, and Mac Alexander (he'll average more than $3mil per year but the first year is always lower.

There's $9 million in dead cap

I redid Cousins 5 yrs $150 million with $95 G - it's basically Matt Ryan's contract. The cap hits go up each year and max out at $34 million in year 5.

I gave DJ Reader 4 yrs $58 million with $29 G - cap hits going from 20 - 23 are 9,11,15, and 20

I gave Chris Harris Jr. 3 yrs $40 million with $18 G - cap hits 8, 14, 18

I gave Anthony Harris 6 years $84 million with $32 G - cap hits 7, 11, 15, 15, and can't remember the last 2.

I redid Harrison Smith to 4 yrs $52 million. Cap hits 6, 9, 14, and 17.

Some opinions of mine. We're doing a GREAT job at the RB position. INCREDIBLE value. Barr and Rudolph are the worst contracts and since the contracts are so new there's really no room to make any changes.

Hill can't be counted on as one of our top three CBs. Not to say he can't be part of the team or that we shouldn't continue to support and develop him, but he is currently in Josh Gordon mode until he puts together a couple of years with no suspensions. I keep Waynes and Alexander unless they're outrageous.

What do you all think of converting Rhodes to safety? I heard a report that said he did better in more of a zone kind of defense and he showed a willingness to tackle. Of course he would have to accept a healthy pay cut, but he does have pretty good size that you like with a safety.

i don't think that you addressed left guard adequately - i'm hoping we sign a free agent stud...i'd rather pick a right tackle with our 2nd round pick and de in the 3rd...we need to save more cap space - reiff is cut - o'neill to lt and rookie at rt....

would have liked a cb picked by the 4th round and another later....

i like that you dealt with our dt issue - with what you've done, i'd cut stephen and save $2.5m....

i think we've got a pretty good crop of young untested wr's on the team - if we're signing perryman i'd give the best one a chance and don't draft one - maybe late if there's one we really like....

hercules doesn't make the team as a lb....

Thanks for putting in the effort David - those are a lot of work but interesting to read.

I would use the 8M to extend ONeil before a contract year. We did it with Diggs, Hunter, Kendricks, etc etc. We don't want Oneil to hit FA. I was very focal about extending Harris before last year - would have rather done that than sign Stephen. Could have had him for a very 5/M or so deal.

Me personally, I cut Reiff - move Oneil to LT and let Collins/Udah/Draft pick battle it out. I'm tired of average - I'd rather gamble on improved play even with the downside risk. When Oneil was drafted I did some research of All Pro LTs, I think 50% (or at least a lot of them) in the last 30 of them followed the same trajectory as Oneil. TE to RT to LT. Plus Oneil played LT in college. I'd use that 8M in savings from Reif to upgrade LG.

Well done!

You are correct about that. I sure wanted to but I had already done too many things elsewhere and let's not forget I'm still $8 million over the cap as it is.

Yeah I think your idea is better than mine in keeping Rieff. He's younger, better, and would lock him in for quite a few seasons.

Either that or one of the big ticket free agents will have to go. Here's the roster. I used the existing cap hit for the players that are currently under contract. After the roster I laid out what the new contracts look like. Some or maybe all of this might be unrealistic and that's fine. It's a conversation piece. All contracts are in millions

Cousins $21
#205 Draft pick Shea Patterson $.6

Diggs $14.5
Thielen $12.7
Free agent Breshard Perryman $7
Bisi Johnson $.6
#122 Draft pick Trishton Jackson $.7

Cook $2
Mattison $.8
Boone $.66
Some random garbage $.63

Rudolph $9.5
Irv $1.3
Morgan $.75
Conklin $.73

Ham $1

Kendricks $10
Barr $12.7
Wilson $2.9 Second round tender
Gedeon $.9
Hercules $.660

Hunter $14.5
#58 Draft pick Kenny Wilekes $1
Odenbingo $.66
Yarbrough $.66

O'Neil $1.2
Rieff $13.2
Collins $.66
Udoh $.63
Dozier $800 One year deal

Smith $6
Harris $7
Kearse $1
Random garbage $.63

Free agent DJ Reader $9
#25 Draft pick Justin Madubuike $2.5
Stephen $5
Jaleel $.9
Holmes $.8
Watts $.63

Free agent Chris Harris $8
Hughes $2.7
Mac Alexander $3
Hill $.66
Boyd $361

Bradbury $3

Kline $6
#89 Draft Pick Logan Strasberg $.8
Samia $.8
7th rounder $.5

Colquitt $3
Bailey $2
Cutting $.6

I cut Linval, Rhodes, and Elflein. I took guesses on Colquitt, Bailey, and Mac Alexander (he'll average more than $3mil per year but the first year is always lower.

There's $9 million in dead cap

I redid Cousins 5 yrs $150 million with $95 G - it's basically Matt Ryan's contract. The cap hits go up each year and max out at $34 million in year 5.

I gave DJ Reader 4 yrs $58 million with $29 G - cap hits going from 20 - 23 are 9,11,15, and 20

I gave Chris Harris Jr. 3 yrs $40 million with $18 G - cap hits 8, 14, 18

I gave Anthony Harris 6 years $84 million with $32 G - cap hits 7, 11, 15, 15, and can't remember the last 2.

I redid Harrison Smith to 4 yrs $52 million. Cap hits 6, 9, 14, and 17.

Some opinions of mine. We're doing a GREAT job at the RB position. INCREDIBLE value. Barr and Rudolph are the worst contracts and since the contracts are so new there's really no room to make any changes.

Usually, we could not be more different in our perspective ... but I think you’ve done a real good job with this.

I can’t see us picking up 3 decent FAs (Perryman, Reader, Harris) and keeping S Harris, Kearse, Alexander ... that would be a very very strong FA offseason given our cap but is just a feeling and you have numbers to back up your pov. Reader and keeping Alexander and some third tier FAs would be about my projection.

There is also talk out there about moving Reiff inside. I think we splurge on either a guard or dt, and if we go dt I move Reiff inside, slide o’neill over and draft rt to compete with hill, maybe udoh. Its far from ideal for an ongoing historical weakness but I could see it unfolding.

Another thing I was uneasy about is that the contracts I used might sink the franchise two years down the road. I do the same thing in Madden all the time. I sign everyone I can and then two seasons later I have to cut six or seven guys just to get under the cap and I end up with a punter playing safety. 🤣

I wouldn't give ANY qb $30-50+ mil unless that QB had won me a Super Bowl. Did you win a Super Bowl on your rookie deal? Yes? Great! Here's your hugenormous contract. F it let's just run victory laps and love life. No? Good luck. Next!

OK so I went ahead and put together my 53-man-roster for 2020. This is more of a discussion piece than a prediction or a 'what should happen' kind of thing. I've made a LOT of assumptions and signed some contracts that might not be big enough. I also went ahead and drafted all our picks, made some cuts, signed some free agents, and restructured some of our guys. then we'd have to sign rashod hill, too...he's a free agent this off season....
