The Vikings have fired GM Rick Spielman and head coach Mike Zimmer, per
@TomPelissero
. It’s official. Let the off-season begin.

Did you think you had breaking news there?

I did! I need work on my skimming ... ;)

Zimmer pitching his case: Look how close we were.

Wilfs: Your MOAP D and cowardice cost us the playoffs. You're fired.

Need to see that news scroll and be done with the Zimmer era.

I'm not feeling too good about my late attitude regarding Zim. Maybe Mond deserved to sit - was he doing what he was supposed to to become the best he could be; I sure don't know.

WTS, I'm feeling like a change is needed - but I also appreciate Zim's effort here ...

... but not that nepotism thing though

oh for the love of God.

I get it now. I thought you were a rugged individualist charting your own Cousins path …

Now I know, you’re just a dude that likes stray unloved dogs and cats.

Zimmer needs to go. Pronto.

I take a bale of hay and put it in containers (liter box containers, a tote and a box) for the stray cats as a dry place to stay warm. I have them in 4 different places. I buy the Iams and keep it in my car for the strays and the iVet I have for my two girls inside.

True story!

Take it as another backhanded high compliment.from me … football disagreements are one thing … animals rock, even dogs - the suckbutts of the animal kingdom.

I wish Zimmer Spielman well, I really do. It was just time.

Hey, we're good as far as I'm concerned.

And it was time, imo, too

Can the Wilfs identify and land the best GM choice. The air could come out of this fast if not.

Right?!

Honestly, I couldn't figure out which guy I liked less. I think it may have been Spielman, believe it or not. Because of him, this organization is up against it for another 2-3 years.

I think you could argue that the Vikings have the most attractive situation for a new GM and HC to come in to. New stadium, state of the art practice facilities and a team that has a lot of talent, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Hopefully Zygi and company make the right decisions, but I suspect they'll have their choice of candidates to fill those positions.

I just hope they find the best GM fast so he can scoop up the best head coach before other teams pick through them.

Exactly. Hopefully, the Wilfs are more plugged in than we all think and they already have a quality GM in mind.

I would put the Bears below the Vikings. The Bears don't even have a first round draft pick.

Lots of “if’s” imo on that list. Vikings have the best roster as is IMO. I don’t count the Raiders because they should keep their coach.

I don't know who Judy Battista is and you could argue that the Raiders have a better situation than the Vikings, but teams like the Jaguars and Bears? Laughable. No one is turning down the Vikings for the Jaguars unless weather is their top priority. And pointing out that any situation is attractive because the team has a great fanbase is just lazy. There are few NFL teams that don't have a rabid fanbase. Regardless, unlike the days of the Metrodome and Red McCombs, the Vikings aren't going to lose out on candidates because of their ownership, facilities, or organization.

Nice links. Thanks, Dan.

Normally, I would say, "Starting over sucks. Now we are going to have to rebuild and we won't be competitive for at least another year (2023) or two (2024) at the earliest."; however, I think (hope) that this situation is different. I think any top college HC or top NFL coordinator could probably keep this team at .500 level or better given the talent and the many narrow losses that the 2021 team endured (a few breaks had this team at 9-11 wins and in the playoffs).

Getting the right GM will obviously be huge. The new GM will need to make 2 huge decisions immediately after being hired: hire a new HC and trade or restructure Cousins. Ideally, IMO, the new HC will be a person with connections to be able to hire quality OC & DC and staff. I also think that trading Cousins and freeing up cap space is probably the way to go. Most teams make their runs when their QB is in their rookie contract, unless the QB is a HOFer. Any team is severely handicapped if their QB takes up 15-20% of their cap without producing at a HOF level. We've seen teams over the years go from Super Bowl-competitive to borderline playoff team when the QB gets signed to their 2nd contract (e.g. Flacco/BAL, Wilson/SEA).

The Vikings have one of the youngest rosters...plus their cap guy knows his stuff.

There are a ton of short term contracts that would clear out space quickly...restructure/cut/trade of Thielen and Hunter give us plenty. I would try to keep Barr and Peterson at reduced cap numbers.

That is crazy. He could have gotten votes for coach of the year. Started 1-7 and finished 9-8.

I'd hire that guy in a heartbeat.

I would too....OC sucked but when you go toe to toe with Belichik that says something. Yeah they were beaten bad week 17 but they were bound to have a letdown game.

Listening to PA this morning, he seems to think that Brzezinski will be involved in the interviewing process for the new GM.

I don't think he's going anywhere.
