No offense to Brad H., but I can't wait to start watching McCarthy prove Brad wrong.

McCarthy is showing he has a cannon, hopefully he quickly learns the right times to take a little something off the ball.

Metellus signed an $8mm/2yr deal last year - it was a huge deal for him at the time, and I was happy for him....

kwesi has been throwing money around like he's playing monopoly...imo giving van ginkel his extension before this season was a mistake - it made metellus' deal look paltry, and he really works his ass off, but it's also hard to judge how valuable he is because he plays a weird position and i'm more accustomed to the 4/3 defense...anyway, give the guy a 1yr extension for $12mm - that would have him making an average of $8mm/yr over the next 2 season....

i'd bet kwesi pays him more than that - like $11mm/yr over the next 2 seasons....

So you're saying Kwesi is tossing crazy money around but you want to see Metellus get extended so that he earns twice as much as his 2023 contract because 1) VanGinkel is making more and 2) Metellus really works hard, although his value is difficult to know due to 1) being a positionless player in a 3-4 D and 2) you are a 4-3 guy.

no, I wasn't promoting anything...i was merely stating some goings on in vikingsland....

i think the van ginkel extension at this time was a mistake...but considering all the money kwesi is tossing around, metellus rightfully feels underappreciated financially....

i noticed we just extended oliver with a 3yr deal...we're more than $50mm over the cap for 2026 - not including oliver/metellus...everyone is getting extensions, and we're going to have to rebuild the d-line interior next year....

So we're cutting Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave after this year?

not necessarily - both over 30 and coming off injuries...short-term fix probably - we might let hargrave go....

most likely we draft d-line early in '26 and maybe pick up a player coming out of their rookie deal...we have four d-linemen capping at around $20mm in '26....

We're the test on team's schedules.

If we're not the #1 seed at the end we underachievered.

Please. We have an inexperienced qb. I expect some struggles early but solid improvement as the season goes on. I'd rather have a team getting better as the season progresses than a good record and be one and done.

Agreed. It's entirely possible the Vikings could have a better team and a worse record than last year. Just look at the difference in schedule. The goal is to secure a playoff spot and be playing their best football at the end of the year.

Exactly. I'm as optimistic as anyone about KOC but you have to look at his record and wonder. Was it great coaching, luck...something else?

The good: 14 and 13 win seasons in just 3 years. Has made journeymen QB's and first round "busts" have really good seasons.
The ugly: 0-2 in the playoffs and the games haven't been particularly close.

With KC's you knew what you were getting. With Darnold, you didn't. He had bad games but was largely spectacular during the season but fell flat on his face when it mattered most. That said, KOC's playcalling in the Det/LAR's game left a lot to be desired.

Enter JJM. No clue how he's going to do but you have expect lumps. If he doesn't give them, great! But....you have to expect some.

My biggest take away from this season isn't him though, it's KOC. This O is loaded on paper. How does the offense "look". I don't give a crap about stats/wins ect. How do we function, as an offense, against the really good D's and in/around the playoff type games. 13/14 win seasons are fun but mean nothing when you get trounced in the first round.

As far as luck, I would point to the amount of one score victories over those two seasons. You have to be good to pile up that kind of that kind of record.

Not to nitpick, but the Giants playoff game was close. It came down to Cousins 1 yard check down Charely on 4th and 8.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45523859/nfl-minnesota-vikings-jj-mccarthy-quarterback

Over time, NFL quarterbacks must master at least three different levels of passes: line drives, those that rise and fall quickly for intermediate targets and those with enough arc to hang in the air for longer-developing routes.

This spring, it was clear that McCarthy was experimenting with the levels, the same way a baseball pitcher might test and try to expand his repertoire during spring training. That might have been the case when McCarthy spotted receiver Jordan Addison open deep down the right seam. McCarthy's throw forced Addison to slow down to make the catch, enough of a delay that a defensive back in a game situation might have had time to break up the play.

Speaking generally, McCarthy said he was experimenting with his throws "every single day" this spring and added: "I believe I've grown the most on just the different level of trajectories of throw. At Michigan, I was kind of a one-speed pitch kind of guy. I had a couple deeper balls with level-three throws and stuff like that, but [I'm] just working on that two-ball and different paces to the 'pitches' and ball location."

Not exactly news but kinda scary to see JJM's take on the subject. Easy to envision wayward or errant throws that are really attributed to his lack of experience with other types of throws. That is, plays where he knows he is unable to drop the ball in there so he ends up throwing a zinger wide of the target.

Sounds like a golfer who drives well but has just started to work on the mid-range/approach/putting game.

Total work in progress.

And it's NOT "the same way a baseball pitcher might test and try to expand his repertoire during spring training." MLB pitchers work on all their stuff to include their 3rd and 4th pitch types, and maybe even test out a 5th.

I like the Oline/Dline/Running Game additions......as big as the C/LG/RG additions have been the backup LT we signed is very important. Same applies for the DLINE. Interior of both lines as long as they stay healthy should really help us in the playoffs......it is what gave Philly such a big advantage.

I will be curious how well we run the ball. KOC's run designing has not been very good for the most part thus far. Especially short yardage. Much of that can be placed at the IOL's feet but I haven't seen much misdirection or clever play designs to counter said weaknesses.

Another aspect is the knack (as a play caller) to keep a defense off balance by mixing the run vs pass. Pat Shurmer was very good at this back in 17.

His screen pass designs have been very poor. Too wide of the hash marks and too slow developing where they get blown up almost immediately.

All of this is very important to keep the chains moving and not putting too much on JJM's plate. If he continues to only go after chunk plays with slow developing routes it could be a lot of 3 and outs. There is plenty of tape on how O'Connell likes to run his offense. He has a very well rounded offense that will be capable of adding different facets to the game. Hopefully he utilizes this and grows as a coach.
