So in all the chatter about the Vikes trading for Ramsey
(which I hope doesn't happen, as he is not the player he used to be and also too expensive),
it seems that Asante Samuel Jr has been completely forgotten.

He is FA, requiring no trade to get him...plus I thought many thought it was a sure thing after the draft

With Okudah apparently looking good in OTA's, you think they are OK with this CB room?

Don't want to spend huge money, and maybe that's what Samuel wants, but it seems like he would make our CB's into a strength

Maybe they're waiting for Ramsey to be cut?

I think we make a move for a CB. Why make all these other moves for veterans and leave a glaring weakness at CB?

Either Alexander, Ramsey or a checked out healthy Samuel Jr. is in purple by the end of the week.

Ramsey certainly isn't prime Ramsey.

But I think he still played pretty solid ball last year.
I think you could argue he played at a higher level then Griffin/Gilmore were playing when we got them.
I wasn't sure how much we'd get out of Griffin/Gilmore but they played above my expectations...
So it seems Flores gets the most out of these guys... if Flores wanted him I'd be down with it.

On the flip side, I'm hoping Flores can actually develop one of the youngs guys on the cheap.

(At worst, Ramsey is probably better than 1/2 the cb room right now)

Griffin was serviceable for the most part last year. Gilmore started out fair and rapidly declined. He was just God awful at the end. They need to find somebody with more tread left on the tires this year.

Did we get a little more salary cap space after June 1 cuts became official? Maybe they were waiting for that?

A post-June 1 designation spreads a player's cap hit over two years, reducing the impact on cap space for the current season. While the designation can be used for players who are cut, it can also be used to help trade high-priced players. This season, a player like Jalen Ramsey of the Miami Dolphins will be more affordable for teams via trade if and when Miami uses the designation.

(As a technicality, Ramsey was not a designated post-June 1 cut)

****

June 2 remains an important date on the NFL calendar because of the change in salary cap implications. Only the current year's bonus proration counts against the 2025 salary cap when players are released or traded after June 1 this league year. Any future bonus proration is a 2026 salary cap charge.

Fourteen players have been released during the 2025 league year with a post-June 1 designation. Five teams, the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, used both of their post-June 1 designations. These 14 players are listed below with the salary cap implications of their departures.

Garrett Bradbury
NE • C • #65

2025 salary cap number: $6.064 million
2025 compensation: $5.25 million
2025 dead money: $814,000
2025 salary cap savings: $5.25 million
2026 dead money: $1.628 million

(It looks like we have an additional $5.25M, but that's under the normal threshold teams reserve for in-season maneuvering. So it shouldn't have impacted going out and spending before the season started. Ask Brzez for details, clarifications, or reverse poison pills)

Something I didn't know.

At the combine, JJ McCarthy's 61 MPH max velocity fell one mile per hour short of the event record (62, held by Joe Milton and Josh Allen).

Sounds like some hand-off merchant with a noddle arm....

The news of Jim Marshall passing is so sad as he never was given his well deserved Gold Jacket. Truly a travesty in my book. Many great memories of him and the other People People Eaters. RIP

Going through the wiki pages of the PPEs, was amazed at how durable the big 3 were.

One of the most astounding things was Page blocked 23 kicks

Another: Marshall played for the Minnesota Vikings from 1961 to 1979. At the time of his retirement in 1979, he had played in every game in Vikings history. CRAZY!

...ESPN NFL analysts crafted realistic trade offers for Kirk Cousins. Then we had our NFL Nation reporters pick the best deal, playing the role of general manager for the team they cover.

Dan Graziano's offer:

Falcons get: 2026 fifth-round pick, 2027 seventh-round pick and cash considerations

Vikings get: Cousins

Why this deal makes sense for both sides: Well, it makes sense for all three sides, really, counting Cousins himself. He wants a chance to start and could use his no-trade clause to nix a deal to any place he doesn't want to go. But if he has to be a backup, we know he liked living in Minnesota and playing for the Vikings. Plus, J.J. McCarthy is still an unknown after his major knee injury, so maybe this could turn into more than just a QB2 destination.

In this scenario, the Vikings would agree to pay $10 million of the guaranteed money on Cousins' contract for 2025.

Seth Walder's offer:

Falcons get: QB Sam Howell, cash considerations

Vikings get: Cousins

Why this deal makes sense for both sides: The key to the compensation for a Cousins deal is how much of his guaranteed money the acquiring team will take on. I'll raise Dan's offer and say the Vikings pay $12 million of it. This would allow Atlanta to save a little face and get out of the situation with a different backup quarterback.

For Minnesota, the upgrade at backup QB is more important because of the McCarthy situation. Cousins will have to accept a lesser role with his old team, but at least he'd be reunited with coach Kevin O'Connell.

if it's up to cousins, I think he'll pick o'connell, and the vikings....

i also think that o'connell, kwesi, and the wilfs look at our team like they're built to win this year and they don't see a backup on the present roster that has any chance of making that happen....

as much as most of us don't want to see cousins behind center in a vikings' playoff game next January, we all have to admit, he's the best choice as qb#2 at this moment....

No he isn't the best QB2 option. You want a guy who will win games. He was benched because he lost games. His dismal performance caused him to lose his starting job to a rookie. I don't want him at $10M or $12M and the Vikings would be foolish to give up any draft picks to get him.

Beyond the public platitudes, you think this why?

And the singular player left to make this happen (to you), the focus of the offseason (to you), is none other than Kirk Cousins (to you). A combo never-was has-been recently-BENCHED washup that this regime will (to you) give another eight-figure salary to AND fork over draft picks to get him in the fold?

Cousins was drafted when Obama was president! And in that time Cousins has made close to a quarter billion dollars while winning one playoff game.

Much rather run Howell out there than Cousins. At least Howell can move Cousins couldn't even take a snap from under center and make a few steps to hand the ball off.

There is nothing realistic about a trade offer for Kirk Cousins.

It is not going to happen unless JJM gets hurt. and even then I wouldn't hold my breath for a trade.

Cousins would love to come back here, but I think they've moved on here. The Vikings are NOT going to give up the draft capital to get a washed up never was at this point.

The Vikings are not going to spend that much payroll on a backup QB either. There is no reason to make either of these trades. We have all the QBs we need on the roster. The only way I'd consider bringing Cousins back is if is he released and he'd take a bare minimum deal.

I'm not advocating for KC's so don't take this the wrong way. I agree with DL. Use the money but elsewhere.

Reports out of OTA's is that Howell's arm is 'meh' at best. I didn't watch enough of him to agree/disagree but I thought his arm was fine but his accuracy stank. He was compared to end of life Brad Johnson without the experience

One other thing of note, IMO. These national reporters need to stop with these over the top "major knee injury" reports on JJ. Yes, he had surgery. Did he HAVE to? No. He took the smart approach and did it. Blowing out your ACL/MCL and PCL is a major knee injury and guys still come back from it all the time these days.
