2024-25 Postmortem Offseason and Draft

2024-25 Postmortem Offseason and Draft - 5/29/2025 7:40:17 AM

The playoff run ended with a thud. Now what? The second apron will, no doubt, force significant roster changes.

The questions:

Will Julius opt out?
Will the Wolves be forced to let Naz and or NAW walk?
Is there help in the draft where the Wolves have picks 17 and 33?
What will Ant add to his game this offseason?

I'm sure there are more.

You need a reliable/consistent guy to take up the slack when Edwards and Randle are either in a slump or defenses (or a defender like DOrt) are shutting them down. And that's assuming Randle is the 2nd 'star' player which is kind of a leap. Alas, those players are not plentiful nor cheap.

Randle went a long way toward winning me over. He showed he can be a productive player and an asset. That said, he isn't worth the money he will get in an extension. If he opts out, let him walk. If he opts in, trade him.

My understanding is that Naz, NAW and Randle are all potential opt-outs for the Wolves this off-season. And the Wolves can't resign all of these guys while remaining below the second apron. And they want to be below the second apron because it not only applies a crippling tax, but also (and maybe more importantly) it prohibits certain trades and overall, makes it extremely difficult to change your roster if you're in the second apron.

If all that is correct, I guess the wolves need to figure out how to prioritize those three guys and assess what the market would be for S&T deals on those guys.

Naz and Randle have player options for next year. Randle at about $30M and Naz is $15M.

NAW is an unrestricted FA.

My guess is they will let NAW leave, since they have guard / wing options behind him in Shannon and Clark. They have nothing behind Rudy for inside players without Julius and Naz.

So you get out of KAT's burdensome contract by potentially getting out of the less burdensome contract of the player KAT was traded for.

Randle’s immediate future will be the main talker. I could go either way. He’s proved he could be a part of a winning team. But if he walks, or opts in and is traded, it’s not a big deal to me.

I honestly think the guy who could and maybe should go is Naz. I know he’s a fan favorite and there would be grumbling if he left. He certainly brings a lot off the bench but he has deficiencies too, and sometimes just doesn’t show up or is effectively neutralized.

The speculation at the moment is that Randle will opt in because the Nets are about the only team with enough cap space to offer him a contract anywhere what he will make with the Wolves next year.

Naz is expected to opt out because he can obviously do a lot better than $15M.

I wouldn’t be shocked to see Naz opt in as well.

His option is slightly more than the MLE, so he doesn’t have many options.

Both guys will likely have more offers next offseason when there will be a lot more money available.

Best coach in Wolves history? Yes he stays.

Yes the past season has proven that any coach can be let go at any time, but there are plenty of other things to worry about at the moment. Coaches are let go when there’s a perception the team is underachieving. I don’t think that’s the case here. We’ve got a generational player with Ant, and some nice pieces around him, but there’s certainly room to improve and get to championship level.

Of course he does.

We had made it out of the first round one time in our history before last year.

Then last year we hear that KAT and Gobert can not work together and everyone thought we'd lose in R1. And then no way could we knock off the defending champs.

This year according to most we made a horrible trade right before the start of the season. People picked us to miss the Playoffs. No way could Randle help a team in the postseason.

Back to back WCFs and people can't wait to get rid of the guy. We played this year with half of an old PG and nothing else. Our back-up C is 6'9, 230 pounds and plays like a SF.

Final 4 two straight years with a roster no one thought had a chance to contend. Until we lost. Then it was a coach holding back an incredible roster.

Our two most important players and cornerstones are 23 and 24 years old. They're surrounded by an "Island of Misfit Toys".

OKC clearly the favorite of the 4, but I agree this year's final 4 seemed more wide open than most.
