Mike Mamula was the original workout/combine warrior.

Mamula was one of the first players to train specifically for the combine drills, performing each drill hundreds of times in the months leading up to the combine. Although that practice is prevalent today, in 1995 most players performed football drills and paid less attention to the specific drills measured at the combine

The Arizona Cardinals have informed quarterback Kyler Murray they plan to release him next Wednesday on the first day of the league year, league sources confirmed to The Athletic on Tuesday. The decision is the first, and biggest, step in Arizona’s quest to find its next franchise quarterback. It also ends Murray’s seven-year run in the desert.

Murray, the No. 1 pick of the 2019 NFL draft, had moments — he made two Pro Bowls — but he never lived up to expectations. He was 38-48-1 as a starter. He never won a playoff game. Last season, he played only five games because of a foot injury suffered in an embarrassing Week 5 home loss to the Tennessee Titans.

What I know on Jonathan Greenard: The Vikings think the world of him as player/person in locker room. In 2024, he signed what now looks like a team-friendly deal. MIN cap crunch complicates any new contract. Interested teams will have to pony up on draft capital & new contract.

Vikings are now open to trading Pro Bowl edge rusher Jonathan Geeenard, per sources.

They would like to keep Greenard, but they also have salary cap issues they’re working through that have led to these trade conversations.

Definitely would go Murray over Smith. If we are looking for a high ceiling guy.

If we are still committed to JJM, then Smith makes sense.

I would take either murray or smith if they dont cost anything (in trade).

with no idea which one will fit better

but ‘better’ than the alternatives.

I think JJ still has a chance to develop down the road but I think its a mistake to sign our placeholder vet for less than two years.

Basing any forward decision on JJ at this moment would be bad with extra no bueno sauce.

Make him climb up and take it if he has it in him.

I agree 100%. The plan with McCarthy was for him to spend his rookie year overhauling mechanics, improving his touch and getting a ton of practice reps in the system. His injury derailed all of that and set the time table back a year. KOC apparently tried to explain this to KAM, who didn’t want to hear it. KAM was so obsessed with having a starting QB on a rookie contract that he didn't seriously look at any other options.

JJ was set up to fail. On the other hand that didn't mean he was obligated to fail. Get someone to start and allow JJ to get back on plan or at least bring in competition. If JJ can climb over a good starting option and claim the job, so be it.

While that sounds like a good plan, all the options are basically craptastic. In no particular order:

Murray - bad work habits and leadership
Geno - TO machine
Jones - system guy that you'll never win with
AR - too old and no thanks with the drama
KC's - been there and didn't work when he was better
Tua - no way he's worth the risk
Carr - retired for a reason and hasn't played in a while

I'm sure I'm missing some but it's not exactly the "who's who"

I'd probably take Geno first if he's released. He's a good fit for KOC, and was actually a very good QB for Seattle the 3 years prior to last. I can't hold playing for Vegas against him.

Mac Jones was fine in a "keep the ship afloat" role in the most QB friendly offense in the NFL. But he still just had 13 TDs and 6 INTs in 11 games (8 starts). Plus I'm not paying a Day 1 or Day 2 pick for him.

Murray does nothing for me. I think he'd struggle mightily in KOC's system and he hates throwing it over the middle (partly because he can't see over his line...)

Carr would have to be zero guarantee. There is no way of knowing if he can even throw the ball anymore. And if he can, how long can he hold up?

There is no chance Tua comes here. He's not going to want to be near Flores and he'll probably have to retire after the first time he gets hit in practice. He should start a business with Ryan Kelly.

Cousins? I just can't...

The only thing on your list I question is Murray.....That was said before the last coach and it has been a shit show there. I even question articles I have read about him not fitting KOC system.

You have JJ, Addison, and TJ and a QB that can scramble for time to throw a deep ball----seemed to work really well for Darnold and Kyler can buy more time.

Murray doesnt have the escapability he had coming into the league. His little legs have been operated on and sewed up like knucles with tiny doll feet sticking out.

He’s a nub.

Arm talent yes but even quatto can see the field better.

But beggards cant be choosers so ….

I’m leaning Smith first as well if released. or Murray.

This FA and rookie QB class is trash.

I'm rolling with JJM as QB1 and Wentz as QB2.

When playcalling moved to his strengths, he played much better. JJM played poorly, but the OL turnstile (Skule et al), a very disproportionate number of drops by WR/TE, and KOC's stubbornness with playcalling did not help.

I'd rather not waste roster spots/FA money/draft capital on dogshit QB. Let's build other areas. Like the interior OL and DL....again.....
