ORIGINAL: Lynn G. In those last couple of seasons he was our neighbor in Bloomington. He and his family rented a house two doors down from us and, I have to say, this was a very middle, middle-class neighborhood. The only fanciness was a house at the end of the block that added a pool (we thought they must be super rich). Al Worthington was just your average neighbor, putting a slip 'n slide in his backyard for his kids, mowing his lawn in ratty shorts and t-shirts... He was patient when we kids would knock on his door asking for an autograph, but in every other way he was just a guy. If my memory is correct, they were there until he retired. He looked every bit like what you’d imagine an average Bloomington neighbor would look like. He played before free agency and before salaries exploded. Players were pretty much at the mercy of owners and Calvin Griffith was an infamous tightwad. I’m sure Worthington made a comfortable upper middle class salary. But nothing like the multimillionaire ball players of today.
