If your gameplan includes Cassel as your long-term starter why bother fielding a team

Seriously

I will be ok with Cassell starting next year under one condition, they have a highly drafted rookied as his underling learning.  A Bridgewater, Bortles, Carr etc...  If they go into next year with Cassel and Ponder or Freeman or some other never will be or has been schlub, then this org is doomed to failure until the entire front office is cleaned out of everyone not nambed Brzezinski.

It will be very hard financially for the Vikings to not keep Ponder as a back up QB. Ponder is going to cost the Vikings $3,232,313 dollars against the cap, whether he is on the roster or not.

I don't believe this is true.

The number you quote is total salary. 1.4M is signing bonus that hits us either way. If we cut him- we save 1.8M minus the cost of his replacement.

You can't keep slugs like Carlson and Ponder on the roster at any cost

Shit, I just looked it up again and you are right. Even though it is base salary- it's guaranteed. I looked up the contracts of Gabbert and Locker and they were similar so there must be have been some rule in place that guaranteed their contracts at that approx.draft position. The 2013 #12 pick DJ Hayden does not have his entire contract guaranteed.

The take way is that unless they are able to trade Ponder - he isn't going anywhere.

No one is trading for him

No new coach is keeping him either

Cut him and suck up the hit

Yep.

We can absorb the cap hit.  Jared Allen and Kevin Williams will both be off the cap freeing up quite a bit of room.  We will be fine to drop Ponder faster than a hot potato.

I know I don't need to explain this to you guys but there is no "cap hit" to take on Ponder. As Prescott said, it's "dead money" we've essentially already paid it.

The team is not going to flat cut a guy who's contract is already paid.

It would cost us at least .4K both in real $ AND in cap space to sign a bum off the street.

The only question is; can we trade him and if not, is he the #2 or #3 next year?

Probably not. I don't even like Ponder, but from an organization standpoint, there's practically no reason to cut him. Viking fans (or I guess detractors of Ponder) want him gone just so no one is 'tempted' to start him, but that's not how anyone in the organization will look at it. He's already paid for so there's really no reason he can't be on the team as the 3rd string/emergency backup.

I'm also getting the feeling that unless Spielman is gone, Frazier isn't either. Especially if they finish with another win or two. Same reasoning, you have a team going into a transition stadium, with a coach that's already paid for. Even if next year sucks and Frazier completely flops, you bring a new coach the second year in TCF, and he's ready to go for the grand opening of the new stadium. Which pretty much guarantees fan support no matter what.

That post was really only meant for Ricky.

we could win the super bowl with cassel/we could have won the super bowl this year if cassel started.

Like I said...take a shot at me if you must but don't wrap a bunch of the board around it. And if you want to be funny, make an effort to let the person know you're joking...and if you failed and someone takes offense...apologize...I got none of that from him.

Lighten up Francis. It was a joke.  After years of posting in here by both of us I would expect you to realize that without me having to spoonfeed that shit to you.  So I am sorry if that offended you...

Another thing...This is a public board, if you have something that is meant for just one poster, might I suggest the PM function?  There is no way for others to decipher what you posted.  When you put that out there, you expose yourself to the ridicule.  and my US Navy experience has me jump all over that almost instinctually.

Just friendly advise.

BTW.  I am nobody's bitch...and my name is not Eduardo.

Even though the post you quoted was meant for PM - not sure how it ended up here...I'll post what I want.

And it was a joke you could have made an effort to show it. Read like an insult to me. And when you could tell that I was insulted...ignoring it wasn't the best option.

Humor/social skills - like oil and water with you sometimes.

Moving on...

If you knew me in person you would know that is not even close to true.  but to convey that in an internet forum such as this is much more difficult.

Yeah man, in person saying the whole board thinks you're an idiot is HILARIOUS! It's only when you read it that it comes off poorly.

Once again Prescott jumps in, takes what I say, changes it and attributes it to me.

I called no one an idiot.

Seriously, it was a joke, if anyone was offended, I'm sorry,

Oh, and I'm pretty sure Todd M can take care of himself.
