Last week I picked the 49ers but changed my mind Sunday morning.

This week I'm taking the Packers, but still might change my mind Sunday morning.

I like the Packers in this one because I think the early part of the season favors teams that throw deep (the Pack still has better WRs than the Vikes, and a QB that is probably more likely to get it there [even though he has yet to complete a lot of them] partially because of his legs to buy the time), and defenses that strip the ball.

I wish the Vikes played the Packers late in the season because it is harder to complete those deep passes late in the season, and the attempts to strip the ball end up being missed tackles late in the season.

I think the Packers will get more turnovers, and will probably complete more deep passes (they attempted A LOT of them against the Rams).  I kind of expect Finley to break out at any point (he was REALLY tearing it up in the preseason), but he has had to help out on pass blocking.  I hope this is NOT the week he really comes on.

The Vikes need to always keep an eye on CB CHARLES WOODSON, always know where he is, and always throw AWAY from him.  It's o.k. to run AT him, but do NOT fumble the ball when doing so.

Looking forward to a good game on Monday night.

Right now, I'm thinking Longwell will have a fear of his kick getting blocked as he attempts a game winner late in the game.  The games between these 2 teams is almost always close.  Longwell will have that fear, and he'll probably MISS the kick, shank it.

Then, either he'll have another attempt in OT, or the Packers will win in OT with a deep pass, or a pass with YAC to Greg Jennings or Donald Driver.  I think it will probably be Jennings.

Packers win 37-31 in OT.

Actually the blocked kick has very little to do with the kicker.  I would guess Longwell hasn't given it another thought.  His job is to kick the thing, everyone else has to make sure thats possible.

My prediciton is GB 20 Vikes 24
GB scored on long pass to someone other then Driver or Jennings (i have both on my fantasy team)  They also score on interception TD
Vikies score 1 with AD  and 1 with Schiancoe and Berrian finally gets unleased in the Bret Farve uses all of his team mates love fest of the week.

Yup. That one had nothing to do with how he kicked it, or how low the kick was. That dude was through the line so fast, the only way he wasn't going to block it was if he overran the play.

it was strange, it looked like he may have actually had to WAIT for the ball to be kicked

Wouldn't it be GREAT if the Vikes won the next game on a blocked kick in the final seconds ?

No, but that would be fine. What would be GREAT is a start to finish thrashing of the Packers.

IF the game could boil down to the line of scrimmage, I think the Vikes could win both and dominate the game.  I think the Packers know that, and will instead try going deep a lot to attempt to make it a shootout, and take advantage of their WRs.  The Vikes will LOSE if the game boils down to a shoot out of deep balls between Rodgers and Favre.

Despite having poor OLs at pass blocking, I expect both Favre and Rodgers to play well for the 1st 3 and 1/2 quarters.  Rodgers is still living in Favre's shadow, and I expect him to play well, unless he's saving it for the game at Lambau.

I think the Packers will blitz HEAVILY on defense, and attempt to throw lots of deep balls on offense.

The Packers might have trouble connecting on deep balls, but will probably get a PI or 2 called, whether deserved or not.  The Vikes will get a makeup PI call on a deep pass, that will lead to a Vikings' score.  I think Peterson will break a long TD in the 1st half, but will be shut down at crunch tim in the 2nd half.

The game will probably again boil down to drive led by Favre, because I think the Packers will get ahead late in the game, with a TD to TE Jermichael Finley.

IF this happens I think:

*1) The Packer 2ndary does NOT fear Favre burning them deep, they jump a route, probably Dirty Al Harris, who takes it to the house to seal a Packer win.

2) Gregg Lewis will get excited about the prospect of once again being the hero.  On a play where last year at Lambau and the year before in Minnesota, at crunchtime, Bobby Wade was clearly interfered with after 5 yards but drew NO flag, Lewis will either draw a flag, or MORE likely, he will burn his man and Favre will hit him with about a 20-30 yard pass that Lewis takes to the house.

3) Favre gets knocked out of the game before halftime, but comes back into the game late in the 4th quarter, with anger and determination to beat his former team, fires a 55 yard TD strike to Percy Harvin.

I think there is about a 40% chance for *1), 20% chance for 2), a 10% chance for 3), and about 30% something like either a blocked FG that wins it for Minnesota, a TD pass that Longwell throws, or a TD pass that Harvin throws wins the game.

Although I like the idea of Harvin throwing the game winner, I think in a close game, #1 is the MOST likely, so I'm predicting the game ends with Favre being the goat and throwing an INT to a GB player (or maybe Kampmann knocking the ball loose), UNLESS Favre is knocked out of the game earlier, then you get #3.

They both know each other well but I think the Vikes have changed more components of their Offense with positive additions than the Packers.
Throw in the fact that are O and D Lines are better than the Packers and combine home field advantage.
I think we will take over the game in the third quarter and win by at least seven.

Historically, it's the other way around.  AD does little in the first half and goes off in the second.  Including in a game against the Packers last year at the dome.  He nearly willed the Vikings to victory in the 4th quarter of that game.

One of the great things about AD is what a beast he is from the very first whistle. In his career, he has 1717 first half yards and 1741 second half yards. A 5.1 average in the first half, 5.3 in the second half. 212 1st half receiving yards, 237 2nd half receiving yards.

The guy is just a beast and should be used to hammer the other team in each and every quarter.

That surprises me a bit...in all of his biggest games he hardly did squat in the first half.  Then blew up in the second.  The Chicago game his rookie year.  The San Diego game.  The Browns game this year...

Two teams that AD struggled with in the past are 49ers and the Packers.  The 49ers slowed him down last week, and I think the Packers could this week.

You raise a good point TrekGeekScott, and I MIGHT be backtracking on my prediction.

I'm now starting to think Favre will be AWFUL in the 1st half, but very good in the 2nd half.  I think Rodgers will start out on fire in the 1st half, but take a beating in the 2nd half.

Rodgers will probably roll to the right and an overly amplified Ray Allen will blow past him several times, leaving either big run lanes or Rodgers will buy enough time to complete some deep ones to Jennings, Driver, Nelson, and maybe Finley.

Favre will be too keyed up and will play VERY poorly against what could end up being the BEST defense in the league at creating turnovers.

The question will be, can the Vikings dig themselves out of a BIG hole ?  (OR is 10-5-09 another statement game where the Vikes dominate, and people start thinking about AP for MVP, and Harvin for ROY ?)

The Vikes have been good at halftime adjustment, so the rollout to Rodger's right will be disrupted in the 2nd half by Leber, Winfield and others blitzing or spying.  The defense will probably put the clamps down and give the offense a chance.

AP will probably be trying hard, but might see fewer carries because the team is way behind, and he COULD fumble as he's trying too hard.  Favre will probably be sharp in the 2nd half, but can he do enough to bring the team from a large deficit ?  With a poor pass blocking line, the Packers blitzing with the lead, and the Packers' 2ndary that can create turnovers, I think the Vikes could be in trouble, it could be VERY difficult to come back from a large deficit.

Marty, AD does not struggle against the Packers.  In three out of four games against the Packers AD has run for more than a hundred yards.  The game he didn't run for more than a hundred was the game that Al Harris took Peterson's knee out.

I fully expect AD to continue his personal dominance of the Packers and lead the Vikings to a win.

Are you saying "Ray Allen" as a catch all for our DE's?

I don't know if it will be because of overrunning the play, but I do think the mostly stout defense tonight will blow coverage and GB will pick up some garbage points that will keep them in the game.  ANd that will be extremely frustrating, because I truly think this will be a game mostly dominated by the Purple...the Pack will pick up points on a couple big plays and we'll win a nailbiter...that is what I expect.

But I am looking for AD to own the Packer D.  Favre will finally get Shiancoe involved as he burns Kampman.  And Harvin will break out on offense as well as ST tonight!  Harvin and AD will overshadow BF, but BF will still get all the credit...and every idiot on ESPN will preface the highlights with, "Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, and the Minnesota Defense were the real story behind this game..." and then they will go on to talk about Brett Favre for the next five minutes.

Vikings win 31 - 21

Ha!  Maybe not...

but they will mention him because there will be some talking head that will claim to have the original idea that this is Adrian Peterson's team and he will carry the Vikings and BF will be the game manager...

haven't hear that one yet...look forward to some thoughtful, thotough, and unpredictable pre-game analysis from the "experts"!!!
