The media reports leading up to this game were a bunch of BS about how Rodgers was goign to provie himself and crap like that.  Did they somehow take Favre off our roster?  Fix their OL?  Get a running game?  Contain Harvin?  WTFE, media.

There was also quite a bit of talk about how Greg Jennings was going to explode. I missed that part.

I think I saw his head explode after the game.

Now that we're effectively at the midpoint of the 2009 season, time to review my predictions.

quote:

OK, time for my predictions for the 2009 NFL Season.

We will start with the NFC.

NFC West
Sucky division will once again send crap to the playoffs (although last year’s crap made it to and almost won the SB).

Division still sucks, but....

quote:

Arizona – is a bit of a surprising team.  They didn’t win a lot of games last year, but won in the playoffs.  They need to get there again to have any chance.  Their offense will depend a great deal on Kurt Warner staying upright all year and not missing time.  If he goes down.,  so do the Cards’ hopes.  That’s a lot to pin on a 38 year old immobile QB.

They look great going on the road and destroying the Giants, then they come home and get beaten by a lowly Pathers team....

quote:

Seattle – It all depends on the QB here too.  If Hasselbeck gets ouchy again…Seattle will disappear again…but they can’t possibly have the same number of injuries to one position (WR)  like they did last year.  The only thing keeping this team from returning to the top of this division is the coaching situation.  Jim Mora Jr proved pretty inconsistent in Atlanta…will that continue here.

Not off to a good start...and Hasselbeck has missed time.  Still not looking like a contender at all.

quote:

San Francisco – May have a pretty good running game…they’d better…cause their passing game will be horrendous.  Their defense should be good.  They could surprise, but I think the QB situation will be their downfall.  Alex Smith or Shaun Hill folks?  Pick your poison.

Two of their losses have been to some really good teams...and not by much, Vikings on the last second miracle play and the still unbeaten Colts, but just 4 pts.  Team is halfway there.  The emergence of Vernon Davis gives them hope in the passing game and Crabree might be a big contributor by season's end.  Singletary isn't going to let this team fade.  They aren't going away.

quote:

St. Louis – Unless they pull a Dolphins they are in complete rebuilding mode (in this division it is entirely possible.  Don’t expect much from this team.

They just got their first win...and they had to be Detroit to get it.

quote:

Division winner:  Seattle recovers.  Stays healthy at QB and WR and wins the division with a 9-7 record.  Nobody else from this division goes to the playoffs.

OK,  the battle is going to be between the Cards and 49ers, and if level of play is any indication...the 49ers will eventually win this division.  Some big question marks, but they are tough and getting better.  Cards are too inconsistant.  Seattle could still sneak into it...but that hope is fast fading.  But it is a weak ass division...anything, except the Rams winning it, could happen.

quote:

NFC South

Carolina – It’s falling apart fast down there.  Delhomme is getting old and can’t stay healthy.  The defense will struggle.  John Fox will be one of the first casualties in next offseason’s coaching carousel..  Deangelo Williams will be their only bright spot.

Pretty much nailed that one, except Delhomme's health...

quote:

Tampa – See St. Louis…total rebuild mode.  New coach, New QB, Just fired the OC.  This team is not going to compete much this year.

Only winless team left at the midway point.

quote:

New Orleans – Biggest coaching pickup of the year.  Williams the DC.  This teams offense will rack up huge yards and score plenty of points.  The Defense has to improve and they did a LOT this offseason to improve it…most importantly getting one of the better DCs out there.

Kicking ass and taking names.

quote:

Atlanta – Will fight for a WC again…but will miss out this time.  I believe Matt Ryan will still have a good year…but they will regress a bit and miss the playoffs again.
Division winner:  Saints.   Only WC chance here is Atlanta…

They've been up and down.  Saints are winning this division...it's inevitable.

quote:

NFC East

NY Giants – Big ??? at WR and Eli struggled when he didn’t have a reliable out guy to pass to once Plaxico shot himself.  Defense should be dominant again…but reports are Usi isn’t looking recovered yet.  Could be problematic

Started off strong, but have looked absolutely pathetic this year.

quote:

Washington – Who will Jason Campbell throw to?  The defense should be improved and if they play run run run they will win a few.

Turns out the problem isn't who the QB has to throw the ball to, it's the QB.

quote:

Dallas – They have some interesting players, But Wade Phillips is not going to be able to keep up the façade of how he’s coaching all season.  He just isn’t this kind of guy.  It wont last.  Losing TO will help and hurt.  Getting Felix Jones back will help.  The defense might struggle a little bit.  Tony Romo will show once and for all if he’s all that or not (I think it’s not).

Sneaking up on the conference...but don't worry, the big game choker will find a way to mess this up.

quote:

Philly – have just lost too much and will be depending on TWO undersized WRs for the bulk of their passing game.  Vick circus will distract the team a bit too.  I see a big fall off here.

hooooo nelly.  One week they are spanking the Giants, but not too long ago losing to the Raiders and JeMarcus Russell.

quote:

Division winner:  Tough to call, but I pick the Giants.  Dallas and Washington will fight for the final WC spot.

Eagles look to be in control with a big head to head with Dallas next weekend.  I really blew the call on Washington...their HC may not last the season...

quote:

NFC North

Minnesota Vikings – Weaknesses, QB, WR, Young Oline at two positions, and Safety.  Other than that, you have AD, Shianco poised for a big season and a D that will be dominating, improved ST, and a focus on Turnover ratio like never before.  This team will surprise a lot of pundits.

WEEEHAWWW.  Only one loss.  The QB isn't a weakness at all, the WRs are coming into their own...the safeties are still a major weakness.  and the D has had some breakdowns.  the STs are greatly improved.  and even though our TO ratio is shrinking after a strong start....it's still on the postive side.  In the bye 7-1 and in command of the division.

quote:

Chicago – Will probably compete with Cutler at QB, but his addition is being way overblown.  He still has nothing to throw to, the Defense is getting old/slow and has been injury prone the past few years.  Forte will be the biggest factor.  He’s one of the better all around RBs in the league.  But I don’t think he will be enough.

Forte looked better...against Cleveland...but this team is not going to be as competitive as I originally thought.  Vikes can't overlook them...but they will really struggle stopping AD.

quote:

Green Bay – Young D, new Scheme, Don’t let the preseason fool you.  They did all their best against vanilla offenses/defenses.  They will improve on last year, but are, like the Bears, a bit overhyped.

Way overhyped...they haven't beaten anyone of signifigance yet.

quote:

Detroilet – I predict they will win more games this year than last year and still compete for the first overall pick in next year’s draft.  The rebuild is in progress, it will be a few years before they can compete.

Well on their way on that one.

quote:

Division Winner:  Vikes (purple shades? Maybe, but I do see us repeating).

Looks like a brilliant prediction there.

quote:

Playoffs:
Vikings and Giants get a bye
Saints and Seattle play WC weekend
Packers and Redskins are wildcards…yes, I said Redskins.

And now I feel really stupid for saying it.
Saints will have a bye.  Giants wont make the playoffs, Eagles will.  Cards and 49ers are going to fight for the west.  yuck...The only one I seem to have right at this point is the Vikes getting a bye.

quote:

Seattle loses and Saints win on WC weekend
Packers move on, Redskins fade away.

Vikings beat Packers
Saints beat Giants.

Vikings host NFCCG and lose to Saints.

I do think the NFCCG will still be Vikes/Saints.

quote:

NFC Champs:  New Orleans Saints.

Though I bleed purple through and through...right now I am sticking to this prediction.

Time to review my AFC predictions.

quote:

AFC Predictions for 2009

AFC West

Oakland – Fighting with the Chiefs and Lions for first overall pick in the 2010 draft…again…only they gave that pick away to the Patriots (morons).  This is now the worst run organization in the NFL.  And it wont get better for the black hole until old uncle Al kicks the bucket.

JeMarcus Russell looks completely lost.  Lot of good being able to throw the ball 80 yards does when you can't do it acurrately.

quote:

Chiefs – in full rebuilding mode.  Matt Cassel experiment is going to be a big catastrophe if you ask me.  Defense it young…team is going to suck…like Oakland challenging for the first overall pick in next year’s draft.

I was right.  They totally stink.

quote:

Broncos – Oh what a mess.  Marshall, Cutler, new coach, Orton looks like crap…they probably would have been better off not firing Shanahan.

OK,  Couldn't have been more wrong here.  Denver is going to walk into the playoffs winning this division.  They seem to have ironed out their issues.

quote:

San Diego – Should walk all over their own division considering the competition…the only thing that can stop this team from winning the division is itself.  Merriman imploding off field…Norv Turner is the head Coach…Tomlinson isn’t getting any younger.  Team must win now.

Norv Turner has done it again...taking a shiny diamond of a team and turned it to shit.

quote:

Division goes to the Chargers…No other team will make the playoffs.

That should now read "Division goes to Broncos...No other team will make the playoffs.

quote:

AFC South

Houston – If Schaub can stay healthy they are poised to make a move.  Stellar defense, one of the best WRs in the game (Andre Johnson), good RB (Slaton), good to great TE (Daniels).  They should be pretty damn good and make their first playoffs as a WC.

5-3 at the midpoint.  Looked mediocre to start, but have looked much better lately...but the loss of Daniels will hurt them.

quote:

Tennessee – Another team that will depend on stellar play from an aging QB.  If Collins goes down, just like the Cardinals, this team is doomed.  The defense will have a fall off after losing Haynseworth.  But health is good and this team will challenge for the division title.

Wow, did this team plummet into obscurity quickly.  They are now depending on Vince Young, by order of the owner.  The defense went down the toilet with Haynesworths' departure and injuries in the secondary.  Only bright spot thus far is Chris Johnson.  AD's biggest challenger for NFL rushing lead.

quote:

Indianapolis – Peyton Manning makes the team competitive…but I have a feeling down deep in my stomach that this will be a year they miss the playoffs.  The rise of Houston and new coaches etc.  Manning can’t do it all himself and they struggle more than they expect.  Losing Dungy will be HUGE.

Manning just keeps chugging along.  Colts aren't going away like I thought.

quote:

Jacksonville – Will anyone go to see the games.  They are actually going to depend on David Garrard and Troy Williamson.  Maurice Jones-Drew will be the only bright spot.

I was right...MJD is their only bright spot.

quote:

Tennessee wins division, Houston gets WC, Indy just misses playoffs.

Scratch that...Indy wins division, Houston gets WC, Titans miss playoffs by a mile.  Jax is a nonfactor.

quote:

AFC East

New England Patriots - With Tom Brady back and Fred Taylor added to the running game…this team should retake the division this year.  The only concern I would have, were I a Patriots fan, is the loss of experience on the defense.  They may need to score 30-35 points a game.

Don't think I blew that prediction at all.

quote:

Miami – Will surprise NO ONE this year.  They will show just how much of a fluke they were last year and return to 8-8 record.

They are looking decidedly average.

quote:

New York Jets – New Coach, new attitude, same results.  They will finish the season staring at the Patriot’s ass.  Sanchez will look good and bad, and will eventually crack a little under the NY pressure.  He’s not playing in Baltimore or Atlanta, so don’t expect Flacco/Ryan results.

Actually, I think Sanchez has been more good than bad, but he has been up and down.  I think he has a bright future...just not this year.
Rex Ryan has been decent as HC.

quote:

Buffalo – TO will make it entertaining, but Dick Jauron is on his way out.

I was wrong...TO hasn't made it entertaining and the Dick Jauron termination clock is in overdrive at this point.

quote:

Division winner – New England.  No other team makes the playoffs.

Jets or Dolphins could squeak in...but I am not counting on it.

quote:

AFC North

Slugfest here we come.

Pittsburgh – Will make one hell of a go at repeating as champs.  Defense is still one violent unit.  Awesome rivalry with Baltimore will continue.

Still good, but not as good as I thought they would be.

quote:

Baltimore – Can games between these two teams get more brutal?

Don't let the record fool you...they are very good.

quote:

Cincinnati and Cleveland have done nothing to show they will not continue to suck.

Was wrong about Cincy, Benson has rejuvenated his career and Palmer looks like the Palmer of old...

Cleveland is an organzation in total disarray.

quote:

Division is a toss up – depends on the play of Flacco and Roethlisberger.  One of them wins the division, the other the WC.

BOTH WCs are very likely to come out of this division now.

quote:

AFC Playoffs
WC round
Baltimore defeats Tennessee
San Diego defeats Houston

Division Round
Pittsburgh defeats San Diego
New England defeats Baltimore

AFCCG
Pittsburgh rocks New England’s world.

What a mess.  I don't see Pitt making it to the SB anymore.  Baltimore might.

quote:

AFC Champ for the second year in a row: Pittsburgh.

Patriots are getting stronger.  But the Colts look nearly unstoppable.

quote:

So that puts the Steelers/Saints in the SB.  And I think the Saints upset the heavily favored Steelers and take home the title.

I must be high.

I'm still high.  Right now I say Colts/Saints, with the Saints getting over the hump.

Glad it helped - I was not trying to be a cheerleader, but rather trying to keep it real.  The media reports leading up to this game were a bunch of BS about how Rodgers was goign to provie himself and crap like that.  Did they somehow take Favre off our roster?  Fix their OL?  Get a running game?  Contain Harvin?  WTFE, media.

Yep, I noticed the same thing.  It was really starting to piss me off, so I made a post about it on the gameday thread.

Picking the Packers was one thing- I think you could make an argument that the Packers might squeak one out, but the slobbering love affair for the Packers last week...

We were clearly the better team, and the only two people I heard acknowledge that were Strahan on Fox and King on SI.  Everyone seems to have dropped their nonsense now though, but we'll see.

If we were to face the Pack again in the playoffs, even in Minnesota, I think it would be all about the
Pack again, they just can't help themselves.

There was a show on the NFL channel where they were breaking down the GB defense before the game and showing how they used their bye to "tighten up" their defense, and correct all their problems.  Then used the footage from the flu ravaged Browns to prove their point.

The media had GB going deep into the postseason after a few pre-season games.  They love Capers (and he did have a good track record for turning defenses around)  I think that the media wants to believe Capers is a miracle worker so badly its hard to jump off the bandwagon.

Vernon I saw the same show and that was when I cranked my Vikings Pick from 11 to the maximum 13 last week. I thought the same as you, they realize that is the Browns offense right? Didn't they also play Detroit without Cal and Matt?

They did.  I am not sure how these ex-football guys can actually say this stuff w/ a straight face sometimes...you would think that guys who have studied film and teams for 7-8 years as players can tell these things.

I think most of these bozos are trying to defend their preseason picks still and they are still 'hatin on Favre.

If any of these guys can pull what Favre pulled this last offseason and still get 12 mil, you can bet your ass that they would do it.

Dont hate the player, hate the game!

Washington at Atlanta -
This has got to be the lock of the week.  ATL is angry after the big loss and Washington is toothless.  This one should not be close.  ATL 34-13

Arizona at Chicago -
This is a real tough game to call.  Part of it may depend upon the weather.  Both of these teams are models of inconsistency.  The Cardinals win over the Giants looks far less impressive now.  The Cubs have been decent at home and terrible on the road.  I will go with the Cubs in a close one 24-21.

Baltimore at Cincinnati -
This is another tough one.  The Ravens got their best win of the year last week and only second decent win.  I am still not convinced they are what they were at the end of last year.  The loss of McAlister makes this defense pretty average.  Even the Chefs put up 24 points on them.  The thing that causes me concern about picking the Bengals is that inexplicable loss at home to the Texans.  I guess I will give them one more shot.  Bengals 34-31

Houston at Indianapolis -
I don’t see any way that the Colts lose this game.  I know the Texans are finally playing better ball and beat the 49ers and Bengals back to back.  But neither team is the Colts in their dome.  The Colts almost losing to the 49ers last week should be their wake up call.  Indy 28-17.

Miami at New England -
The Fish wins are over the Jets and Bills – whoopee.  The Pats are doing their usual of beating up on weak teams and folding when hit in the mouth (see Denver).  Since I don’t consider the Fish strong enough to hit them in the mouth I like the Pats.  Also, Bill B has to be steaming still over last year.  Pats 41-23

Green Bay at Tampa Bay -
The Bucs are brutal.  The switch away from Leftwich made them non-competitive.  The young QB shows promise from time to time but this team is simply not competitive.  GB gets an easy win.  Pack 33-10

Kansas City at Jacksonville -
Battle of the dogs.  The Jags have been mediocre at home, as opposed to mostly bad on the road save one game, so I expect them to beat a bad team at home.  Jags 23-17

Carolina at New Orleans -
A lot of people are calling for the upset.  The Panthers finally seem to be playing better after a disastrous start.  They had a solid win over AZ last week.  However, just the week before they actually lost at home to the Bills by 11 points!  This game is basically their season because lose this and it is time to start thinking about the draft.  I could see them taking it to New Orleans early and playing inspired football.  But I just don’t think they have the horses to outgun the Saints.  Saints 37-27

Detroit at Seattle -
If KC-Jax is battle of the dogs then this is battle of the cockaroaches!  Even with Hassleback they have gotten smoked 2 weeks in a row.  Then you have the pussycats.  The lost to the Lambs last week….at home!  This is the moveable object meeting the resistable force!  Flip a coin.  I pick the home coackroach.  Seahags 13-10

Tennessee at San Francisco -
The resurgent Titans against the better than expected 49ers.  I think the Titans have the type of offense that the 49ers can handle.  The Niners have lost 3 in a row but improved play in each game and were real close to the Colts.  I like them to turn back the Titans in this game as I am not sold on the Titans having joined the 2009 season yet.  SF 23-20

San Diego at NY Giants -
Big game for two struggling teams that were expected to compete for the SB this year.  The Chargers have lost to every good team they played this year and struggled to beat the Raiders twice.  The g-Men (little g) are falling apart at the seams.  Each loss has gotten worse.  However, Tom Coughlin is a good coach and I think he rallies his team this week because a loss really dampens their future.  NYG 27-23

Dallas at Philadelphia -
This is Tony Romo’s statement game.  The Cowpukes were completely destroyed last year here and have revenge on their minds.  This is their week to show they are a real force this year.  However, I think McNabb and DeSean Jackson are starting to get on a roll.  Dallas also has to show they can play well on the road.  Eagles 34-27

Pittsburgh at Denver –
The third game that I have trouble picking.  Broncs got toasted last week and will want to make a statement this week.  However, the champs have won 4 in a row and have had over 2 weeks to prepare and rest for this game.  I see them making a statement that THEY are the champs and if you want the ring you have to come take it.  Pitt 23-13

Nice work, JC!

Agree with most, but I think:

1. Arizona beats the Bears
2. Miami will play much closer than you give them credit, but still probably lose
3. And the G-men just might be on the way out this week, though I like your point about coaching

I can see 1 and 3 but I think this is one of those games Bill B has circled to crush the opponent.  Now, we will see if NE still has the horses to do that now that they are not playing a bottom feeder team this week.

I sure hope so.

Yep.  Patriots has two chances to stop the wildcat last year and failed both times.

San Diego is travelling all the way across country, and they're coached by Norv Turner, the master of turning shiny gold into steaming piles of shit.

Gmen get right this weekend.

Bill B had two cracks at stopping the wildcat last year and failed.  I still think NE comes out with a win, but Miami isn't getting crushed here.  This isn't the Titans.
