They don't have a return date yet, but the 24 team playoffs seem to be a done deal. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced Tuesday that the league is planning to return with a 24-team playoff tournament. The 2019-2020 regular season is officially over. The top 12 teams in each conference (as of the March 12 pause in play) will participate in the 24-team playoff tournament, which means that the Sabres, Devils, Senators, Red Wings, Ducks, Kings, and Sharks have all been eliminated. Tournament games are expected to take place in two hub cities, with Las Vegas, Toronto, Chicago, Columbus, Edmonton, Dallas, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Vancouver, and Pittsburgh all in the running for hosting duties. There should be a follow-up announcement relatively soon about possible dates for games and which cities those games will be played in. Bettman suggested Tuesday that it may take 3-4 weeks to fully sort out the schedule and other logistics. Training camps could get underway around the beginning of July.
