I won't argue the need for more teams before some are moved out of bad southern markets, however, it would be ideal to get to 32 at some point for scheduling balance.

The Stars are actually really popular here.  They are very ingrained in the community too.

I know there's some residual hate here, but I'm fine with The Stars being in Dallas and as Jeff says, they seem loved there.
The crowds you see in Florida are the real embarrassments to me.

I almost feel like the Vegas team, should it happen, needs to be a new franchise. It's not gonna have the same impact if you're just moving another team. They would be bringing in kind of a loser-ish feeling. I'd say they should try expanding to 32 teams, with Las Vegas and Seattle being the new additions. You need the excitement of a completely new franchise in Las Vegas. Moving the Panthers doesn't have the same exciting feel to it. Then a few years down the line, try to move the Florida teams somewhere else or just contract them.

Couple awesome games last night ... Caps slap the Pens around and the Kings frustrate the mighty mighty BossHawks.
Never

Count the Kings out of anything. (big picture)
DAMN I wish just one time we would get a killer-ass team like that in this state. Just one damn time in my lifetime.

Caught the Preds game last night. One of the best saves I've ever seen.

You guys know I'm not a huge hockey guy (I'm trying, I'm trying; I do like it), but it's pretty fun to see this town get into the sport. The craziest thing is seeing more and more youth play it. I'm not sure there was a single rink in town before the Preds came. Now they've got a fantastic public facility for the community that the Preds just helped build. Still really weird as a "Northerner" to see hockey taking hold in a town like Nashville, but it's also really cool.

Scott/Jeff, what can you guys tell me about the Preds' big trade? Will this put them over the top?

Really unique acquisitions
You get guys who began their careers there and who answer needs on both ends of the ice.
An offensive force and producer, and a defensive minute-eater.
And they're going to basically be able to just rent them for a run at the Cup.
Great piece of GM-ing, imo. Go for it. Opps rarely come around like this.
If it doesn't work, you reconsider them, since both are due for new contracts at the end of this year. If it works, you have an in with them.
Solid pickups who instantly add depth and talent.
Has to make fans and players and management happy. Its a win/win/win in my eyes.

Agree. This was unique (good word man). When you have a history, you have an in. Hockey is much different from the other 4 major sports. Hockey players are generally very loyal. That gives the Preds the in's to get this done long term.

If it doesn't materialize, you have guys that will help with a cup run. Cup runs are tougher than every other championship out there. That isn't "hockey-homerism". That's a fact. When you have a legit chance (like the Preds do) you go balls to the wall and don't look back.

You've strengthened your D and scoring in one swoop. Nicely done. Critics, if there are some, will point to the fact that they are both URFA's.

Thanks fellas. That's how I thought of it too, but wanted the expert takes. Can't wait to see how it all plays out. Would be awesome to see them make a run. This town needs something like that to cap off the boom it's experiencing the last few years. Vandy's bad and faces an uphill battle (and now the awful rape trial), the Titans are probably the worst team in the NFL, and it's not quite ready for an MLB or NBA team (10-15 years, yes). A Cup run would be awesome.

No expert here.
Just a guy who admires what they are doing.
I remember all the angst when Suter walked, and thinking... "gee, that'd suck if they actually got better and we didn't"
(gulp)
Cant stand Weber, but he's a BEAST

Tatar out-Kanes the Hawks in the shootout tonight
Just as sick as pretty boys move(s) the other day, but bet it doesn't get the pub that Kanes did.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) The New York Islanders have agreed to terms with Nick Leddy on a seven-year contract, keeping the 23-year-old defenseman away from restricted free agency.

Leddy, acquired on the eve of this season from the Chicago Blackhawks, agreed to the deal on Tuesday, six days before the NHL trade deadline. The contract is worth $38.5 million and will run through the 2021-22 season

The Florida Panthers are making moves again.

After trading Sean Bergenheim to Minnesota and acquiring Jaromir Jagr over the past week, they completed another deal on Saturday afternoon just before their game against Buffalo by sending veteran forward Tomas Fleischmann to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a 2015 third-round draft pick and Dany Heatley.

With Jagr now in the mix Fleischmann was no longer necessary in Florida and when combined with the trade of Bergenheim to Minnesota (for a third-round pick) the trade helps them, at least in part, get back the picks they sent to New Jersey for Jagr (second-and third-round picks).

Fleischmann has appeared in 52 games for the Panthers this season and scored seven goals to go with 14 assists. In Anaheim he will be reunited with Bruce Boudreau, his former coach from his Washington days where he had some of his most productive seasons.

Heatley, who was at one time one of the best goal-scorers in the NHL during the peak of his career, signed a one-year contract with the Ducks over the summer but has struggled to make much of an impact at both the NHL and AHL levels. In six games with the Ducks he failed to record a single point. He has two goals and five assists in 25 games for the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League.

According to the Panthers, he will be reporting to San Antonio in the AHL.

The Washington Capitals have traded defenseman Jack Hillen to the Carolina Hurricanes for defenseman Tim Gleason, the team announced.

The Caps also sent back a fourth-round 2015 draft pick in the deal. That pick was previously acquired by Washington from the Arizona Coyotes.

In making this swap, the Capitals add the 32-year-old Gleason, who has seven points in 55 games for the Hurricanes this season.

"We are pleased to welcome Tim to our organization," Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said in a team-issued press release Saturday morning. "Tim is a veteran, physical defenseman and we feel his experience, toughness and skill set further strengthens our blue line."

Hillen, 29, has five points in 35 games for the Capitals this season.
