The Shooter says a little birdie told him it is Buzz Williams and they will announce it when Marquette is done. So, we know that's not it.

Sorry, Sweens. SI is reporting that Smart has accepted an extension with VCU.

The dream dies. I am still confident Teague and Ellis are going to get us an excellent coach.

Agreed. I'm not worried at all.

Rumors this morning that they may have a deal in place with someone...

I think Flip still is in the mix, though a fallback plan. Teague HAS to have an eye toward public perception here. He appears to have swung and missed on Shaka, after getting everyone's hopes up along the way. If he swings/misses on Hoiberg, Stevens, and Buzz, who else is there? I think he'd get a lot of heat if he ended up with Anthony Grant (or would Grant turn him down, too?).

If we get to next week and there's no new coach, I think Flip is the clear frontrunner. At the very least, Teague would appease a bunch of rich donors who remember Flip as a player and assistant during the glory days of the Barn.

If it's someone like Anthony Grant, I will be severely underwhelmed. Now Amelia is throwing out Chris Mack at Xavier. Ugh, same deal.

I make a huge financial commitment to Brad Stevens -- why not? I'd also at least sniff around Fred Hoiberg and Buzz Williams. I suspect those are longshots. After that, honestly, I probably look at someone like Flip or Howland. The chance that someone like Chris Mack or Anthony Grant takes us back to Monson levels is far too high for my liking.

Howland? Puke. I'd take Flip over him any day of the week.

If that's really what we are down to, I will just quit following Gopher hoops all together.

My wife said basically the same thing. If it's Flip, she's done with them until the bandwagon is worth being on.

So why hire Grant? He did once to VCU but Grant built up his résumé quickly and left Teague holding the bag. Why trust him again? It's like a woman leaving her husband for you, if she could do it once, she could do it again

I get the Flip aversion, but I just don't see the huge risk. To me, Flip's hypothetical worst-case scenario is that he's basically Tubby 2.0: he's not a great recruiter (neither was Tubby), he doesn't have a ton of energy (neither did Tubby), and he doesn't connect well with younger players (neither did Tubby). On the other hand, Flip's undoubtedly one smart dude and a good basketball mind. The idea that he's some terrible basketball coach is, I think, off-base.

The risk on a guy like Anthony Grant or Chris Mack? Dan Monson 2.0 (general incompetence) and an absolutely empty Barn.

And here's one other consideration. Outside of Stevens/Hoiberg/Williams, I don't see a candidate more likely than Flip to reel in at least 2 of the big 3. It's so hard to overstate the importance of that recruiting class to this program. Any coach who gets them has the springboard to push this program to new heights. And to all three of those guys, Flip is a big name with legit NBA cred. To be honest, I could see Tyus giving the Gophers more of a shot because of Flip more than for just about any other candidate, including Shaka.

The problem with Flip is that the hypothetical worst case scenario is the most likely scenario. Which means six more years of the last six years, which means there is no point in following the program for six years. And Flip is even less likely than Tubby to reel in any of the big 3. Tyus is not coming here period. He has gone to Coach K's summer camps for a couple of years now.

Grant left a bottom coaching position for a better one. Coming to Minnesota puts him in the biggest conference as far as talent exposure and money. This ain't like leaving VCU.

He's never recruited, so we'd be really reliant on his main assistants (one of which is likely to be Ryan).
