Here is the thing about Tubby....none of his assistants received consideration for other jobs......that is the one thing about Brewster (Even though he sucked as a coach, he got the recruits and had good assistants).

What we need from the new coach is one that: 1) can recruit and 2) fill in his coaching or recruiting inadequacies with assistants that can......Tubby couldn't do 1 or 2...

I think Teague and his assistant can get the Top Young Assistants to sign on under Flip if he is hired....with a chance to take over in a few years.

The problem with the Monson hire is that is top assistant was the better coach....

Do you think Flip is going to sign on to coach and NOT chose his own assistants? If an AD has to pick the assistants for a coach he hired, that's a pretty good sign he hired the wrong guy.

I will name my next child Teague if that happens, Dave.

You two (Dave and SMF) better figure out the wife situation before you have any more kids SMF.

Not my wife, not my kids.

I find it interesting how many have come out against firing Tubby.

Just don't get it. This was a 15-1 team that sunk like a rock, and a program that failed to finish .500 in the conference for SIX YEARS under Tubby.

And that's OK??!!??

But...but he was a NICE GUY.

I give it to Izzo and Bo...they can recruit a 1-5 star player and coach them up and get the most of them......with Tubby every player ends up almost an enigma:  Williams, Mbawke, Nolen, etc., etc.

If it was me...I didn't see a future for Ingram, Welch, or even Williams at the end....Tubby should have played the hell out of Eliason, Walker (after he got healthy), and Ellenson (especially for someone that likes to mass substitute)....

Blake Hoffarber made the most of his talent but I don't believe it was because of Tubby---he could just shoot the hell out of the ball.

I remember about 4 games that Dre Hollins won games for the Gophers this year by carrying everyone....that has nothing to do with Tubby...

And even Blake regressed throughout his time with Tubby.

Now the good thing about Flip maybe being the coach....Flip will get T Tucker as an assistant and his son Ryan.  Tucker probably knows the three big in state recruits.  Then Teague can fill out the staff with a great young assistant and another recruiter that he as access to.

I've heard Ryan and Eric Musselman.

Doogie:

If University of Minnesota athletic director Norwood Teague and senior associate athletic director Mike Ellis get their way, Dinkytown will soon have a "mayor."

According to two sources, the vacant Gophers men's basketball head coaching job is Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg's if he wants it.

Both sources said Teague has spoken with Hoiberg, and told him every amenity -- practice facility, more access to private jets, etc. -- is a guarantee.

However, one of the sources said it's 75/25 that Hoiberg won't leave Iowa State for another college job.

Hoiberg, 40, has Minnesota ties, having played for the Timberwolves from 2003 to '05 and subsequently worked in the team's front office.

He played from 1991 to '95 for Iowa State in Ames, where he's affectionately known as "The Mayor," and returned to coach his alma mater in 2010.

The Cyclones were 16-16 in Hoiberg's first season, then improved to 23-11 and 23-12 the past two years, advancing to the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament each season.

So you think Teague would be happy if Flip hired all relatives as assistants?  I do know that the AD/Administration get some say or else Jimmy Williams would have been an assistant to Tubby.  Administration said no way since he was involved with some prior scandal at the U which ended up in a lawsuit.

I don't think Teague would hire Flip in the first place. But I think your Jimmy Williams example is apples and oranges. There is a HUGE difference between telling someone who to hire and vetoing a potential hire.

Andy Katz:

Minnesota coveted VCU’s Shaka Smart, but his former boss, current Golden Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague, couldn’t convince Smart to come to the Twin Cities (he should know Smart is loyal to VCU) for the head-coaching job from which Tubby Smith was just fired. According to sources, the Gophers have now turned their attention to Iowa State’s Fred Hoiberg and Butler’s Brad Stevens. We’ll see, but I’ll be shocked if either were to go to Minnesota. Hoiberg is the Mayor in Ames (it's his alma mater) and has Iowa State in a good place after back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances. If Hoiberg were to leave for Minnesota, the NBA's Timberwolves, not the Gophers, would make more sense. I can’t see Stevens bolting, either, with how much he loves the Butler way and working for AD Barry Collier. Stevens can have a lifetime contract at Butler, much like Mark Few has at Gonzaga. If they can't convince either of these two, the Gophers may make a play for Cincinnati’s Mick Cronin. But Cronin is from Cincinnati and loves his gig, too. The only reason he might listen is if he sees the need to go to a school in a more stable conference.

Three days in and I'm already in panic mode -- this search looks like a dumpster fire. Did Teague just think he'd grab Shaka and that would be that? Are we in a Jerry Kill 2.0 scenario?

Texas Tech has contacted former Minnesota coach Tubby Smith about its vacant head coaching position, multiple sources told ESPN.com on Thursday.

One source said Smith was expected to meet with Red Raiders officials as early as Thursday. Smith, who won an NCAA title at Kentucky in 1998, was fired by Minnesota on Monday after six years at the school. The Golden Gophers went 21-13 this season, losing to Florida in the NCAA tournament round of 32.

Efforts to reach Smith on Thursday were unsuccessful.

Texas Tech already has met with a handful of other coaches about the job, including Oral Roberts' Scott Sutton, Southern Illinois' Barry Hinson, New Mexico State's Marvin Menzies, Indiana assistant Steve McClain and former UTEP and Nebraska coach Doc Sadler, who is in his first season as director of basketball operations at Kansas.

What's bugging me is that Teague is resembling David Kahn going after Batum. He seems to be pouring a lot of effort into pursuing coaches who have no interest in leaving their current jobs. The more I read about Shaka, it sounds like he would only consider leaving VCU for one of the so called Royalty Programs. Hoiberg is coaching in a najor program in his home town. He's not leaving. Go after the guys that are gettable.

Hoiberg agrees to a 10-year, $20M extension. Maybe Norwood is getting a cut of all these guys' raises.

Frankly, I am more concerned about a GM who does not go after a top rated person, because of fear of not being able to land him. What did we lose by going after Hoiberg, 24 hours? That harly ate up any time on the clock. There is always time to go after incompetents like Saunders. Why take a run at Hoiberg, because Flip is going to become the Wolves next GM? Dream away!

How many coaches could do better than a 9th place finish in the Big 10 with the roster we had last year?  I think the majority of them....so that leaves quite a list for Mr. Teague and company.  (Personally going into the season I think we had a top 5 talented roster that Tubby turned into a top 40 team)

Rumors are the list of replacement coaches is about 20 long and I would take any of them over Tubby.

I look at Iowa, Michigan, and Michigan State and what they get out of their Freshman and I know we can do better w/o too much fan fare or even one of the top 5 coaches on whatever list.

If they get the right coach hired and keep their recruits...we still have a top 10 roster.

The weaknesses all last season were C\PF and a True PG.  Dre Hollins belonged at SG and Williams playing PF with Mbawke never worked quite right but with Elliason and Mbawke/Williams it worked okay and most fans could see it.

Oh, nothing much. Just credibility. Every public rejection lowers the profile of the job and calls into question whether or not the AD actually has a plan. Not to mention the UCLA's have more time to make in roads with more realistic candidates.

Pete, this is very unlike you. Teague wouldn't be doing his due diligence he they didn't put out feelers to Smart and Hoiberg, even though we (and they) knew they would be longshots.

I get the sense from Twitter and the local media that a lot of fans feel the only improvements on Tubby in the world are Smart and Hoiberg, and now it's we're screwed. I don't get that. It's been three days -- there is no reason in the world to panic.

Agreed. I'd be upset if Teague didn't bother reaching out to guys like Hoiberg and Smart. It's now clear an offer was never on the table; what's the harm in a phone call?

Not convinced at all this is true. Smart turned down UCLA as well -- are other coaches going to say "hmm, not so sure about this UCLA gig...I mean, Smart turned it down." Or Hoiberg? Really? I have a hard time beliving that Hoiberg staying at Iowa State is somehow going to make the Minnesota job less attracive to other coaches.

I could be wrong, but I don't think they went after Fred, I think it was media saying that. Fred doesn't seem like the type of coaches they attracted to their Villa 7 pgm. The story came from Ames and possible his agent feed it to get his guy the raise.

I'll go out on a limb and say they hire either the Marquette or Wichita St coach. They have ties with both

I could see pursuing Smart, given the past relationship. Following it up by pursuing someone who was not interested in the least and had said before that he already has his dream job is puzzling to say the least. Especially since Teague and Ellis are supposed to be the most connected basketball tandem in the known universe. Whoever is pursued now is looking at himself as no better than their 3rd choice. It doesn't take much for this to turn into the fiasco that led to Kill's hiring.

No they offered Fred the job and Iowa State gave him a new 10 year deal.
