If University of Minnesota athletic director Norwood Teague and senior associate athletic director Mike Ellis get their way, Dinkytown will soon have a "mayor." According to two sources, the vacant Gophers men's basketball head coaching job is Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg's if he wants it. Both sources said Teague has spoken with Hoiberg, and told him every amenity -- practice facility, more access to private jets, etc. -- is a guarantee. However, one of the sources said it's 75/25 that Hoiberg won't leave Iowa State for another college job. Hoiberg, 40, has Minnesota ties, having played for the Timberwolves from 2003 to '05 and subsequently worked in the team's front office. He played from 1991 to '95 for Iowa State in Ames, where he's affectionately known as "The Mayor," and returned to coach his alma mater in 2010. The Cyclones were 16-16 in Hoiberg's first season, then improved to 23-11 and 23-12 the past two years, advancing to the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament each season.
