He was at Iowa. That's a worse program than MN. I think he did well there to me.

According to Andy Katz, Flip turned the Gopher job down.

I think Flip is a smokescreen. I can't see Teague hiring a guy like Flip, but I can easily see Flip offering Teague whatever kind of cover he needs. I think a contract with someone is being hammered out this weekend and we'll get an announcement Monday or Tuesday. Now the "Hire Flip!" contingent cannot complain...much.

Supposedly Teague wanted to help Flip hire asst coaches that could recruit. Any coach wants his own people as asst

Does a "Hire Flip!" contingent exist?

An alum who was a successful NBA coach, lives in town, and is a big booster two years after Iowa State's fortunes started rising with the Hoiberg hire? Very, VERY much so.

I just don't see the upside for Flip in providing that kind of cover. And for Teague, why would he want another very public "no" answer? The rumor that Teague/Ellis wanted control over the assistants sounds legit.

Well, Mr. NoGood Teague, let's see who option #4,327 is.

Have any of us risen up high enough in the "who's left" list .... To get mentioned yet?

Well, rumor has it that Jim Molinari is next up. NoGood likes his exciting style of play.

PS -- just kidding. But even Molinari might turn it down at this point. This is becoming ever more of a national embarrassment.

So -- does NoGood end up with an assistant from a major D1 program, or a low/mid-major head coach?

People behind the scenes at the University even began the early stages of preparing for a possible press conference to announce Saunders as the new coach.

Where did things go wrong?

According to sources, it is believed Teague and Ellis wanted to help Saunders hire his staff, which easily could have been a deal-breaker for a coach of Saunders' caliber -- a 638-526 career record in the NBA and 30 years of coaching experience.

Seriously, NoGood? Seriously? I'm wondering if it came down to them telling Flip he couldn't hire his son.

Here is the thing about Tubby....none of his assistants received consideration for other jobs......that is the one thing about Brewster (Even though he sucked as a coach, he got the recruits and had good assistants).

What we need from the new coach is one that: 1) can recruit and 2) fill in his coaching or recruiting inadequacies with assistants that can......Tubby couldn't do 1 or 2...

I think Teague and his assistant can get the Top Young Assistants to sign on under Flip if he is hired....with a chance to take over in a few years.

The problem with the Monson hire is that is top assistant was the better coach....

Do you think Flip is going to sign on to coach and NOT chose his own assistants? If an AD has to pick the assistants for a coach he hired, that's a pretty good sign he hired the wrong guy.

@DarrenWolfson: RT @RyanJamesMN: Told the #Gophers Ath Department said no to Ryan Saunders being on staff & that was huge reason Flip shut things down.

The other day Tim said there should be a rule, no sons on staff . He must have had Norwoods ear.

On ESPN.com's front page: "Saunders turns down Gophers job, source says."

This kind of publicity is good for the program?

Would you have the same stance if Shaka Smart's deal-breaker was his (hypothetical) brother coming to coach? If Teague got as far into negotiations with Flip as sources seem to indicate, it's odd that Ryan -- a full NBA assistant coach -- was the true sticking point.

All in all, it's hard to discern any coherent plan from NoGood to this point. And that's distressing.

So, Ed, assuming we're at or below the level of Andy Enfield (FGCU), would you be more interested in a Enfield-type head coach or an assistant from a major D1 program?
