One of the new assistants apparently did time in Fed Prison for mary possession. Heard that on KFAN.

96 lbs.

Apparently he's really turned his life around and did a ton of work with youth in NYC before moving to Richie's staff at FIU.

Welcome, MaC03!

So how do you feel about Flip Saunders?

Fun guy to listen to on the radio... besides that, no thanks. I like the direction that Teague is taking us, he wasn't able to get Smart or Stevens so he went and got the next Smart/Stevens.

Talk about jumping into the fire. RPJ has been impressive out of the gate, imagine if he hit a home run with this class. Am I setting the bar too low by thinking it would be a miracle to get Jones? (or any of the 2014 big three for that matter)

Go get em!

If Pitino Jr. is able to pry him away from Coach K, that will be a huge sign that the dude can recruit....

Probably not a big deal. If Pitino Jr wants him, he'll go back and talk to him. This way he has 4 openings for his players instead of being stuck with Tubby type player

I bet Pitino already talked to him and told him to go elsewhere.

Hi all, found this site and have been reading as a guest - a lot of good info in here, seems like a great group!

Saw this regarding the Foster recruit, looks like you're right on twinsfan...

Nadine Babu ‏@NadineBabu 14h
Per @Foster_34 on confirming decommit: Yeah the (#Gophers) assistant called me and basically said they were going to go a different route.

Excited about the Pitino hire!

See? I'm not sure why all my conspiracy theories are bemoaned around here. Usually I'm either onto something or on something.

From Gopher Hole:

Just to recap potential Spring Recruiting for the 2013-2014 season - subject to change as I think things may happen quickly with new Richard in charge.

4 Scholarships available for 2013-2014 - If they use them - Richard says they would have to be the right fit.

Some possible suspects from the Gopher Hole:

Rakeem Buckles

Highly rated out of HS in 2009. 3 Injury filled years at Louisville. Transferred to FIU for the 2012-2013 season and sat out for transfer year and injury rehab. According to GI Buckles plans to transfer from FIU to Minnesota. Speculation centers around eligibility. If he graduates in Spring some think NCAA will allow him to transfer and play right away - (See Travis Busch to CSU). Also, FIU appears to be headed toward APR penalties (from Isaiah Thomas era) banning them from post season play. NCAA might allow a transfer to play right away at a new school if a School gets that penalty. Buckles would be one and done at Minnesota if he plays in 2013-14. If he has to sit 2013-14 the NCAA possibilities are just too immense to imagine.

Shane Rector

Point guard High School senior 2013 - signed LOI with Rutgers but recently released from LOI. Ryan James says we are interested. Other schools are interested - including Rutgers.

Cameron Forte

Junior College - Small Forward whose stock has been rising lately was being recruited to FIU by Richard Pitino. Forte has tweeted that Pitino has carried over that offer to Minnesota. He has several other high profile schools interested.

Malik Smith

FIU Shooting Guard with some PG skills will ask for and presumably get his release from FIU this week. He has sung the praises of Richard Pitino for teaching him about BB and work ethic. I have seen no direct mention of Minnesota as his destination but he evidently would be eligible right away for his final year of eligibility. Another attractive one and done possibility in terms of scholarships.

Tarik Black

Memphis College Graduate - eligible to transfer and play right away as another one and done. I have seen no direct mention or connection to Minnesota other than he is from Memphis and so are Austin and Andre Hollins. Not sure there is any interest in either direction.

Josh Davis

Power Forward Tulane Graduate - 17ppg and 11rpg - eligible to play right away as another one and done. No mention of any interest either way with Minnesota that I have seen. Both Illinois and Iowa State I believe are in the picture.

Who is MaCO3? I recognize carbonate but what element is Ma?

Welcome and some good comments already.

Join the group who never saw Flip as a good fit as coach of the Gophers.

It's just a joke. Pitino/Riley/Billy Donovan I've (and a lot of basketball fan friends have always felt) are definitely mobsters. Just the slick hair style and attitude.

I'm sure it wasn't your intent, Dustin....but most Italian people would be offended by that statement/stereotype.  And this is coming from someone who is about as politically incorrect as you can get.

However, I was amused by the thought of a connected guy running a college basketball program.  Let's just say that sort of thing isn't exactly their style.

Certainly not the intent, Corleone, and meant no offense. There are plenty of other Italian coaches and I've never thought that about them. Heck, is Billy Donovan even Italian?

It was always just the way those 3 guys carried themselves, and the Miami/NY connections, etc. Donovan especially just always seemed like a shady guy to me, and is a disciple of Pitino. They're a 2 for 1.

Doogie

The Gophers never reached out to Nebraska basketball coach Tim Miles, who sources say, would've given serious thought to replacing Tubby Smith. But they have thought about the Cornhuskers.

In fact, look for Nebraska assistant -- and former Gophers player -- Ben Johnson to fill a spot on new Gophers coach Richard Pitino's staff, according to sources. An official announcement should come as soon as Friday.

Johnson, 32, was in Lincoln for one season. He spent the four previous years on Northern Iowa's staff. Before that, he was at Texas-Pan American for two seasons. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Dayton in 2005.

Pitino interviewed Johnson in Atlanta on Monday.

A star player at DeLaSalle high school for coach Dave Thorson, Johnson can use that relationship to help recruit Reid Travis. Pitino met with Travis Thursday afternoon at Williams Arena, and will meet with another member of the local Class of 2014 Big 3, Cooper's Rashad Vaughn on Friday afternoon, according to a source.
