A star player at DeLaSalle high school for coach Dave Thorson, Johnson can use that relationship to help recruit Reid Travis. Pitino met with Travis Thursday afternoon at Williams Arena, and will meet with another member of the local Class of 2014 Big 3, Cooper's Rashad Vaughn on Friday afternoon, according to a source.

I like this move...

I like it too, local ties with experience recruiting in the big 10. He was the recruiting coordinator for four years at Northern Iowa.

So now Teague and Flip have both stated for the record that Teague never said no to any assistants that Flip wanted to hire. According to Flip he was only going to take the job under certain conditions and not all of those conditions were going to be met. Flip says he turned down the job because "it wasn't a good fit".

This convinces more than ever that what I was saying at the beginning of the process was true. Flip is a die hard Gopher supporter. Cut him and he bleeds maroon and gold. But he was never interested in being the coach. He would have taken the job under the right circumstances out of die hard loyalty to the program, but professionally he is an NBA guy, who would prefer to stay in the NBA. Mark Rosen has brought this up a few times. Even Grandpa Sports believes Flip never wanted the job and is biding his time until the NBA off season when he will likely take over as GM of the Wolves.

My guess is that if Flip was going to pass that up to coach the Gophers he was going to need a level of control and autonomy that the U was not comfortable granting him. I think Clem forever ended any hope of that level of control for future coaches.

All I know is if Coach K mysteriously disappears and Jones commits to the Gophers immediately after, your going to be treated with a lot more respect in these forums.

Finding a recruit who could step in immediately without taking up a treasured scholarship in 2014-- when a loaded recruiting class becomes available -- is clearly something that is important to new Gophers coach Richard Pitino and his staff.

The name Rakeem Buckles, who is currently at Florida International, but is reportedly considering a transfer, has come up in that context (Buckles could only play immediately if Minnesota were to successfully get such a waiver).

Now, another name along those lines is getting some life.

According to a source, the Gophers have offered Tarik Black, a big man who has played at Memphis for the last three seasons.

Memphis coach Josh Pastner told CBS Sports last Tuesday that Black would graduate this semester and then transfer. As a graduate student, Black would be eligible to play at his new school right away.

The 6-9, 262-pound forward would potentially be a big help in replacing former Gophers center Trevor Mbakwe, who departed after last season, but Black has no shortage of interested schools according to CBS Sports' Jeff Goodman, who tweeted that the junior has already drawn interest in 20 schools, including Duke and Kansas. The Gophers -- who Black took for 13 points and five rebounds before fouling out after 16 minutes of play in the Bahamas last November -- might offer him one of the best opportunities to start immediately, but with so much attention thrown his way, Minnesota is far from a lock to get him. Black averaged 8.1 points and 4.8 rebounds a game last season, down from the previous season, when he averaged 10.7 points and 4.9 rebounds.

Pitino and Co. have made it clear that they only want to bring in recruits that are a "good fit" for the program. Black could be that for Minnesota, and would represent a notable early recruiting "victory" for the new Gophers staff if they were able to coax him to Minneapolis.

Guard Daquein McNeil, who had been committed to Pitino at Florida International, reversed his commitment Wednesday and opted to follow Pitino to Minnesota.

McNeil, a 6-foo-3, 185-pound native of Maryland, spent his last three years playing for Vermont Academy prep school. Rated as three-star prospect by Rivals.com, McNeil committed to the Florida International in October. But when the NCAA basketball signing period open Wednesday he decided to join the coaching staff that had recruited him.

McNeil is 6'3", 175 lbs and had a 3-star rating according to Rivals. He reportedly had offers from Oklahoma, VCU, Rutgers, Richmond and UAB. ESPN Scouts evaluation:

Strengths:
McNeil is a long lead guard with instinctive playmaking ability. He has a quick first step and is capable of creating offense off the dribble at virtually anytime. He has good court vision for a young guard, keeps his head up in the open floor, and is capable of getting hot with his jumper. He is also a potentially lethal defender with his long arms and quick feet. Physically, he has a good frame with broad shoulders and emerging strength.

Weaknesses:
Although McNeil sees the floor well, he isn't a true point guard as he struggles to play without the ball in his hands and doesn't yet see the game more than one pass or dribble at a time. He has an inconsistent shooting stroke with varying release points but still has a tendency to settle for contested shots from the perimeter.

Bottom Line:
McNeil has great size, length, quickness, and playmaking ability and consequently the potential to be a very effective lead guard at the next level but must continue to polish his skills and develop his basketball I.Q.

Objectively speaking, McNeil's probably not quite as good an all-around player as Alvin Ellis, the guard they lost. But McNeil may (1) be a better fit for Pitino's system, and (2) they need a PG/SG more than a SG/SF, so I'm happy with it.

Yeah. I doubt he's going to be a star, but he seems physically ideal for guard depth in Pitino's system.
