If Pitino succeeds is he going to use the U as a stepping stone job to a better, higher profile program in a few years?

Either way, I don't expect him to be here for long. He's definitely an up and comer, but to get hired he will have to have some successful years.

Former Cooper star Rashad Vaughn transfers to Findlay Prep
Vaughn will play his senior year for an elite Nevada high school team that plays a nationwide schedule.

Love the individual progress reports.
I've always done that. Love doing it and the other coaches love it too.
Keeps you focused on the small victories each individual makes , in order to make the whole team better.
Great way to assess progress or regression.

I don't think it's a cinch that Pitino jumps to Louisville when his dad retires. There was a piece written not that long ago that the trend among the "up and comers" is to stay put and build long term programs instead of using one place as a stepping stone to another. Pitino recently commented about something I had heard previously; Minnesota is a state with close to 6M people and emerging pool of talent with no in state recruiting rivals.

Plus the Big 10 is already an elite conference

Jumping from 1 to 10 here from a little quote in a PP article.

But Reid Travis said:
“I took Gonzaga already as my first official,” Travis told Scott. “I’ll probably get out to Stanford, UCLA, Michigan State coming up soon. …Probably go to the home state, Minnesota, too. So those are the officials I’m kind of talking about right now. (But) some other schools could come into the picture, so it’s kind of wide open.”

I realize it was a long shot to get any of the Big 3 recruits but the Probably word about taking an official U visit seems like we are an even longer shot on him, as in NO SH0T. He just added that in to be polite and keep everyone off his back about not coming here for a little while longer.

I've heard a lot of comments that indicate that the Gophers have a good shot at landing Travis. Almost like he just wants the home town to convince him that they can compete. Jones is an absolute pipe dream. He will say the right things and keep the Gophers on his list to the end, but he is 100% going to Duke. Vaughn is somewhere in between those 2.

IOW, no chance:

Gophers guard Andre Hollins was recently involved in a bike accident. A team source said, "He simply slipped on loose gravel and went down hard." He got some scrapes, but is ok.

Gophers coach Richard Pitino flew commercial on the first leg of the weekend's recruiting trip. I thought this would be the weekend that he took advantage of his $50,000 private jet allowance. Maybe he did, but not from the get-go. In the last week, Pitino watched prospects in AAU events in Philadelphia, South Carolina, and Indianapolis.

Class of 2014 Apple Valley point guard Tyus Jones recently on the Gophers' effort in landing him: "They talk to me quite often. It's tough for them. I've been talking to other colleges (and coaches) for years. I'm wide open to building a relationship with them. It's been just fine."

Keep in mind - most of us never thought we had a chance of landing Zach Parise for the Wild either.

I never had a doubt Parise was coming here. I also thought there was a good chance we would get Suter too.

From Charlotte NC

Remember the names of Tyus Jones and Jahlil Okafor, who are setting up as a recruiting package deal. [Jones] is ranked as the top point guard and No. 3 overall prospect in his class by ESPN. He has court vision that can't be taught and toughness that comes innately, too. There's also a good chance Jones will bring one other attribute to his future squad, something rare for major college basketball: his best friend. Jahlil Okafor, a 6-foot-11 center from Chicago's Whitney Young High, is the No. 1-ranked prospect in the class of 2014 and has known Jones since the two were in third grade. ... [Jones and Okafor] want to team up and play together in college. There are six schools on both of their final lists: Baylor, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Duke.

Yep, the Okafor thing is the reason I think he's not coming here. If it weren't for that, you'd never know.

On June 28, both Isaiah Whitehead and Ja'Quan Newton sent tweets that hinted of a package deal. [Whitehead and Newton] initially confirmed the rumors to Jeff Borzello of CBS Sports on June 28. Following the first July live period this weekend, Whitehead continued to fuel the fire of the package deal that would send two top-50 players to one school's backcourt. "We're just talking about it," Whitehead told NBC Sports [on Saturday]. ... The duo both hold offers from Georgetown, Minnesota, Rutgers and Syracuse. As Borzello mentioned in June, Richard Pitino and his staff have made an effort to recruit the northeast and it appears it is paying off for the Golden Gophers. "I'm taking [my official visits] after the live period," Whitehead said. As for taking any official visits with Newton? "Possibly Minnesota," Whitehead answered.

Doogie

It was a good news, bad news weekend for soon-to-be Hopkins sophomore guard/forward Amir Coffey. As expected, Pitino offered a scholarship to the son of former Gopher Richard Coffey after seeing him Saturday in the Best Buy Classic in Bloomington. The bad: he suffered a cracked tibia, which shouldn't require surgery. His recovery time is approximately six weeks, according to his mother. In talking with Coffey on Thursday, he indicated that his general physician recently told him he should grow to be 6-foot-9. As for that Gophers offer: "Minnesota is a great school," Coffey said. "I grew up around the Gophers because my dad (Richard) went there. I'm always on campus. I love Minnesota."

- Shooting guard J.P. Macura, who is in the Lakeville North class of 2014, also played in the Best Buy Classic. He recently got an offer from the Gophers. "They definitely have a chance," Macura said. "I'll spend a lot of time with their players in August. Then I'll decide if I like hanging around them and if it's a good environment. I'll make a decision in September." Macura likes the future of the Gophers under Pitino. "I think he'll turn the program around," Macura said. "He doesn't see me as just a shooter. He sees me playing the game all-around. He thinks I can come in and do good things for the program."

Richard Pitino Blog: Recruiting & Much More
By Richard Pitino on July 29, 2013 4:25 PM | No TrackBacks

Good afternoon, Gopher fans!

I am currently writing this blog 30,000 feet in the air, headed back from my last recruiting trip of the July recruiting period. A lot of coaches differ in their approach when it comes to July recruiting. During this period, NCAA rules allow us to evaluate possible recruits. That means we aren't allowed any in-person contact with a recruit, AAU coach, or anyone associated with the recruit. Many coaches have different game plans during this time. Some head coaches will follow around their top targets and make sure they are seen at their games. Other coaches believe being seen during this period isn't important come decision time. I have gone back and forth on this topic. I do believe it keeps you in the mix with recruits, but when it's time for a decision to be made, rarely does me being at their games in July come into the discussion. There are several stages to recruiting and this is simply a necessary step that has to be taken. Every kid is unique and values certain things in the process differently. Our staff will get together tomorrow and put together a game plan for how to approach each recruit.

Over the last two weeks we have done individual instruction instead of team practices. My goal during our team practices was to establish our style of play with the guys - more so offensively than defensively. We have given them a few plays and let them run with it. We have taught them certain terminology and rules that they will hear daily during the season. In the end, the summer is great because we get to work with our players, but it will be completely different than the regular season. We also do our best to build as much chemistry with the incoming guys so that they feel comfortable when school starts. It's only July and everyone understands it is a long season. A great foundation was laid with Coach Smith. We are looking to continue to strengthen that foundation each and every day.

I hope everyone was able to pick up Saturday's Wall Street Journal. The front page mentioned a story, "The Nations Nicest City." It was a two-page feature about how beautiful the Twin Cities are. It certainly was a great depiction of how beautiful our new home truly is. I hope everyone can check it out!

The Wall Street Journal has a great article about Minnesota today. Love the headline!

Can't give enough credit to what Mo Walker has done with his body over the summer. He has lost more than 50 pounds and will continue to be in the best shape of his life.

Congrats to Peyton Siva, a player I helped recruit while I was at Louisville, and his new wife, Patience. I took a break from recruiting on Saturday to attend their wedding. Peyton is a great player and an even better person. We hope to find another one like him on the recruiting trail!

Lastly, we will be releasing our non-conference schedule tomorrow so be sure to check it out on Gophersports.com.

Go Gophers,
Richard Pitino

Richard Pitino Blog - Grading the Players, Conditioning & More
By Richard Pitino on August 7, 2013 4:16 PM | No TrackBacks

Good afternoon, Gopher fans!

Today as summer school winds down, we turn our focus on individual player meetings with each of our student-athletes. My plan is to review their academics and give them feedback on their basketball progress and what they need to work on this fall.

Our staff met early this morning and gave each guy a letter grade in four categories. They were broken down into strength and conditioning, basketball, academics and attitude. Maverick Ahanmisi was the only guy who got A's all across the board. He got an A- in leadership only because we want him to be more vocal. Joey King also got the perfect score but received a B- in his attitude. He got the grade not because he has a poor attitude, but more because he needs to find a way to channel his emotions and energy a little better.

Many of our guys will go home for a few weeks before we start up school at the beginning of September. We plan to have all of our guys back in time to support our football team on August 29. I know Coach Kill and his staff will have their team ready to go!

The last two days we did two one-hour practices. The first 20 minutes consisted of skill work, and the last 40 minutes were controlled scrimmages. A major weakness of our team right now is our inability to communicate. Certainly this is understandable with a new coaching staff, but it is something we will focus on when they return. It is impossible to get to where we all want to go without good communication.

Yesterday was a good day if your last name was Hollins. I challenged both Andre and Austin to play like two of the most feared guards in the Big Ten, and they answered the call. The summer allowed our players to improve their fundamentals and implement our fast-paced offense. We still haven't put in our press because we simply didn't have enough time or enough subs to go 5-on-5 for a long time.

The level of conditioning the players need and the foundation for how we want to play was laid this summer, but we all understand we have a long way to go. Every member of our staff is extremely valuable. No person has shown that more than our strength coach, Shaun Brown. He helped change a lot of our players' bodies as well as their diets all in a short amount of time. The intensity and commitment will certainly be turned up even more when they return.

There has been a lot of talk about facilities and how to improve in these areas. I truly believe we have enough right now to compete at the highest level. Our philosophy is to always talk about what we do have, not what we don't have. We have an extremely passionate fan base, an outstanding university, a marquee basketball conference, a tremendous home court advantage and one of the most desirable cities to live in the country. I have all the faith in the world in our athletic director, Norwood Teague, and his staff to continue to improve our athletic department. We are absolutely headed in the right direction.

In the meantime, our goal as a staff is to make the best of the situation at hand right now. When I first took the job, I didn't like how spread out our players' days were around campus. We practiced, lifted and studied in different buildings. We knew that we had to make a change to make it easier on our players. With the current changes we are making we feel we have done that. We are excited to say that a dividing wall has been put up in the Bierman Athletic Building. By doing this we have essentially created a practice gym for our guys. Our players can now practice, lift and get academic support under one roof.

We plan to practice often and do individual instruction on the Bierman practice court. We are also putting brand new state-of-the-art strength and conditioning equipment in the upstairs weight room at Bierman. This fall, a typical day for our players will be individuals and weights in the morning, then study hall in our academic center -- all at Bierman. Then they head to class and practice later in the afternoon at Williams Arena.

Many coaches take a week or two in August to take a vacation somewhere before school starts back up. My family has chosen to stay in Minnesota this year. We decided to do this because I don't think there are many better places to be than Minnesota in the summer time! Our staff will get together over the next week and continue to game plan in recruiting for potential visits as well as solidifying our recruiting schedule in September.

Go Gophers!
Richard Pitino

Gophers basketball: Tyus Jones considering official visit to U
By Tim Leighton
tleighton@pioneerpress.com
POSTED: 08/14/2013 12:01:00 AM CDT
UPDATED: 08/14/2013 04:04:40 PM CDT

Maybe the University of Minnesota isn't out of the running after all for Apple Valley senior point guard Tyus Jones.

Jones, one of the nation's top five high school basketball players for his class, told the Pioneer Press on Wednesday that he is strongly considering using the final of his five official visits to head back to Dinkytown.

He spent Tuesday touring the Minnesota campus and meeting with new Gophers coach Richard Pitino and his staff. Along for the visit was DeLaSalle's Reid Travis, a teammate of Jones this summer on their AAU national championship team. Jones said he left the visit impressed.

"It went really well; the talks with the coaches were great,'' he said.

Earlier Tuesday, Jones announced via Twitter that he would take his officials visits to Baylor on Aug. 30-Sept. 1, Kentucky on Sept. 27-29, Kansas on Oct. 18-20 and Duke on Oct. 25-27. His visit to Minnesota was "unofficial,'' but that could change if he plans to return.

Jones said Pitino and his staff didn't react negatively to his visit not being official. He said they parted on a high note. Pitino, Jones said, is encouraging him to return for an official visit, a move that Jones said he will discuss with his family.

Jones, who led Apple Valley to the Minnesota Class 4A championship in March, has had a banner summer. He and Travis led their Howard Pulley summer team to the AAU Super Showcase championship in Orlando, Fla. He also attended the CP3 camp in San Diego and the Peach Jam in Augusta, Ga.

He will end his summer competition by playing in the Elite 24 event in New York on Aug. 24, which features the best high school players in the country. Reid and former Robbinsdale Cooper standout Rashad Vaughn also will participate in the all-star game that Jones says is a "neat and fun way to end the summer.'' Vaughn is transferring to Findlay Prep in Las Vegas.

Another highlight for Jones was playing along younger brother Tre, an eighth-grader, when Apple Valley won the Pacesetter tournament in St. Cloud, Minn. Tre is expected to make the Apple Valley junior varsity this season and could get some varsity minutes to play alongside his brother.

"It's been a great summer,'' Jones said. "I've had great experiences.''

Most prognosticators have Jones choosing Duke. He said there is no significance that Duke is his last recruiting stop, adding that Duke picked the dates.

In the wake of a dominant summer playing together, Jones said the topic of he and Travis attending the same college has come up.

"I think so as well,'' Jones said when asked if they would make a dominant one-two punch. "Reid and I have really been clicking. The longer we are playing together, the better it is.''

Jones said he and Reid weren't spotted on the Minnesota campus by any students.
