Report: Rakeem Buckles denied waiver at Minnesota; will appeal
Rob Dauster Aug 28, 2013, 1:01 PM EDT

Rakeem Buckles may not be able to play for Richard Pitino at Minnesota after all.

On Wednesday, the NCAA denied Buckles a waiver to be eligible to play for the Gophers immediately. Buckles played for Louisville for three seasons, suffering through a myriad of injuries — two major knee surgeries, a broken finger, a concussion — before transferring to Florida International. He sat out the 2012-2013 season, and he has one year of eligibility left. He transferred to Minnesota to follow Pitino, his head coach at FIU.

The news was first reported by Amelia Rayno of the Star-Tribune.

The complicating factor here is that Buckles’ five-year window to use his four seasons of eligibility will come to an end in 2013-2014, meaning that he can’t sit out the year as a redshirt because he’s ineligible to play in 2014-2015.

FIU faces a postseason ban this season due to APR issues from the Isiah Thomas era. The NCAA allows athletes to apply for a waiver for immediate eligibility if the rest of their career at an institution will be played under a postseason ban; that’s how Alex Oriakhi gained immediate eligibility at Missouri after transferring out of UConn. Buckles’ teammate at FIU, Malik Smith, has already been given a waiver by the NCAA to be eligible immediately at Minnesota.

Minnesota will appeal the decision. If that appeal is denied, Buckles may be forced to walk-on back at FIU as new head coach Anthony Evans has already filled his scholarship.

Buckles averaged 6.8 points and 6.1 boards in 18 minutes as a sophomore at Louisville before tearing his right ACL in February of 2011. He tore the ACL in his left knee in January of 2012.

Richard Pitino gave a pretty lengthy interview at the fair today to Judd and Dubay. The podcast is about halfway down the page here:

What sucks about this is that the NCAA has not given any hint of a good reason for not granting Buckles' eligibility. It basically comes down to "No, f*** you!"

Am trying to be optimistic about the Gophs. First scrimmage is Friday night.

But promoting Mav as one of the key guys....yikes.

Promotional email has Mav first, then Andre Hollins, then Austin Hollins pictures.

Mav?? ugh

Pitino wants to be aggressive...man, the "big guys" are going to have to work hard to not get into foul trouble. Not much depth.

Agree.  Good thing he has been conditioning them; they'll be seeing a ton of minutes.

I can't imagine Tubby writing that and also making it public. I like the sharpness. He's like a knife with his words.

ha, exactly... I agree Bruce, he is very direct with both his praise and his criticism. I love it as a fan and I would think that the right kind of players will enjoy playing for him and actually develop. He builds them up, instilling confidence, then gives them something clear to work on.

Tubby was more like a diplomat or a politician. He couched his words so much that they almost didn't mean anything anymore.

Minnesota Gophers coach Richard Pitino has recruit No. 2 for his class of 2014.

Combo guard Nate Mason, out of Montrose Christian School in Rockville, Md, announced Friday evening via Twitter that he has verbally committed to the Gophers.

Mason (@NateMason_2) tweeted: "I'm officially committed to (sic) University of Minnesota! Go Gophers!!!!!!"

Rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, the 5-foot-11, 160-pound Georgia native also had strong interest from Virginia and Kansas State.

Mason joins forward Josh Martin as part of the Gophers' current 2014 class.

He looks pretty good to me. He's a scoring type of point guard.

Fingers crossed.  Tough to turn down Duke, but who knows.

Would make this 2014 class go from good to very good in a hurry.

Just snagged tix to Cardinal-Stritch this Friday.  Excited to see the Pitino game in action.

It's already been a busy week for Richard Pitino and his staff.

The Gophers men's basketball team had its media day Monday. Then, Pitino added to his first recruiting class Tuesday morning.

Pitino added a Junior College guard, Carlos Morris, according to Morris' Twitter account.

Morris joins guard Nate Mason and forward Josh Martin as members of Pitino's inaugural recruiting class with Minnesota. Morris visited the University of Alabama-Birmingham this weekend, according to Amelia Rayno of the Star Tribune.

Well now with 3 added, it doesn't leave any scholarship for the top 3 Minn boys if they wanted to stay. I think just room for 1 more

I admit that I don't understand how this all works, but how does a school like Duke, which attracts the best players across the country, always have room for a zillion scholarships?

Part of it is they get better players that leave early (freeing up scholarships).

But here is a cool site showing teams current situations:

Thanks - that had a lot of information. Do all schools have the same number of scholarships they can offer, or does that vary depending on the size of the school enrollment?

Thanks again. I imagine I could have done some googling to find that out, but I tend to be lazy about that when I know someone has the answer already in their brain.
