UCLA and Washington St were the other top teams after Mathieu. He's had a few rough patches, but what a solid add to this team. And then some.

3" taller and he would've had his choice of major colleges out of HS.

Wow. What a game.

After watching Tubby's "what the hell am I suppposed to do with the ball?" offense for so long, it's amazing to watch guys play with confidence.

You don't miss "swing the ball around the perimeter for 30 seconds until the most open guy takes the shot" offense?

Not all -- weird, eh?

Have to keep this intensity up on the road. They need to against alleged "lesser teams"...tho NEB won vs THE Ohio State Buckeyes.

No clunkers like that scratch win at Penn Sate. Win the games "you're supposed to". I won't count Tim Miles out. Another solid coach.

Big win tonight. Nothing much better than beating Wisconsin.

I really like Pitino, I hope he stays for a few years and we will be a factor again.
Miles is a good coach, but hasn't recruited much talent to this point.

I remember how ecstatic most were about the hiring of Tubby. How far he was going to take the team.
I don't think he had the energy anymore. Pitino is young and aggressive and IMO will prove much better for the program.

Does anyone believe that Andre Hollins goes down in the first 30 seconds and we still win that game under Tubby?

Hell, does anyone believe we win that game WITH Andre Hollins under Tubby?

The players look like they have a sense of purpose on offense now. Under Tubby it was kill at least 25 seconds and then try to figure something out. Pitino has this team organized and they know what they are supposed to do in all situations.

Damn
That was fun
Dismantled a very solid and deep Wiscy team
That rarely happens
Loved the guard play

Still recovering, however ... from the stats I saw during the game, where Wiscy is something like third in the country in the least number of fouls committed per game.
That may be the most ludicrous, unbelievable, completely-out-of-whack stat I've ever heard.
They build their team, they create their rep, they insist ..... on tenacity and aggressiveness and downright physicality.
And yet they are rarely penalized for it.
Hmmmmm. Interesting.

Such a smart player. Must be a joy to coach; you see him make a mistake in one game and it's fixed by the next.

Loved his play tonight

Never underestimate what Tim Miles can get done.
Winner

That was a great hire at a place that needed a great hire almost as much as we did.

MINNEAPOLIS -- It’s eerie, really.

He stalks the sideline like him. When he pauses and folds his arms to survey the action on the floor, he stands just like him.

He enters the postgame press conference following 40 minutes of scrappy play against a nationally ranked opponent and his hair is still slick and neat. His father’s hair also stays flawless throughout the night.

If you close your eyes as he begins to speak, you don’t hear him.

He even sounds like Rick Pitino.

And he coaches through drama like him, too.

As Andre Hollins, his best player, limped to the locker room following a nasty ankle injury he’d suffered on his team’s first possession, Richard Pitino gathered his players and issued a charge.

“He said, ‘Our best player went down, but somebody needs to step up because we’re a team,” Minnesota forward Oto Osenieks said after his squad’s 81-68 victory over No. 9 Wisconsin on Wednesday night. “Players did.”

From that moment, the Gophers outplayed a Wisconsin squad that has now lost three in a row. But the Badgers’ woes -- beginning with another subpar defensive effort inside (Minnesota scored 48 points in the paint) -- were the sidebar.

Pitino dismissed his team’s chief rival at the Barn in his first season, a week after knocking off Ohio State in the same building.

That’s the story.

Minnesota is now an unlikely 4-3 Big Ten team with victories over Ohio State and Wisconsin. Entering the season, an NIT bid seemed reasonable for a squad that had lost all-conference big man Trevor Mbakwe and two other starters. Now, the Gophers are positioned for an NCAA tourney invite and a surprising finish in league play.

Richard Pitino has quickly turned Minnesota around.
After Wednesday’s win, it’s clear that Pitino is not just rebuilding. He’s hosting a season-long episode of “Pimp My Program.”

Maurice Walker came off the bench and dropped 18 points and nine rebounds. Malik Smith finished with 14. Dre Mathieu added 18 points. And Austin Hollins recorded a second-half dunk that rocked Twitter, the highlight of his 11-point, four-steal effort.

The Gophers shot 59 percent from the field against the typically stingy Badgers. They didn’t miss a free throw (11-for-11). Wisconsin never led.

Andre Hollins witnessed most of the action from the training room. When he rejoined his team on the bench after halftime, he had a boot on his right foot as a result of an injury that won’t be completely diagnosed until a Thursday morning MRI.

Once their top scorer left the court, the Gophers could have crumbled. Probably should have.

Instead, they -- pick the cliché -- pulled together. They regrouped. They overcame the odds.

There’s nothing typical, however, about this program’s rise in Pitino’s first year.

Two years ago, Mathieu, a 5-foot-9 point guard, was a walk-on at Morehead State who ultimately ended up playing for Central Arizona junior college when MSU wouldn’t offer him a scholarship. Smith wasn’t an all-conference player in the Sun Belt last year but he’s a solid presence for Pitino. Walker lost 65 pounds after Pitino told the big man that he’d have a hard time excelling in his up-and-down, pressing system.

There are many overachieving underdogs on this roster.

That’s why there’s a certain swagger that these Gophers boast now. They’ve taken on their coach’s mentality.

“Coach tells us we [have to] be confident,” Mathieu said. “Don’t have an ego but be confident and know that we can play with anybody in this conference if we play hard.”

When he arrived last spring, some wondered if the 31-year-old Pitino could vie in a league with Bo Ryan, Tom Izzo, Thad Matta and other tenured coaches who’ve been in the profession for as long as he’s been alive.

Pitino smiled and talked about how much he respects the coaches in the league when he faced questions about his youth and inexperience -- his one-year stint at Florida International last year was his first head coaching gig -- and whether they could be hindrances.

If he’s anything like his father, then he viewed those doubts as challenges.

Think I’m too young for this? Just wait.

The Gophers can feel that quiet fearlessness. They thrive on it.

If there’s anything that Ohio State and Wisconsin and other programs around the country have proven in recent weeks, however, it’s that winning streaks can be replaced with successive losses. Quickly.

Seasons can turn on one bad week, especially for a squad that could lose its best player for an undetermined stretch.

Pitino is certainly ahead of schedule, though.

“I didn’t have any type of expectations at the beginning of the year just because I really didn’t know what I was getting into at the beginning of the year,” Pitino said. “I do think that we’ve got very good chemistry when things are clicking.”

This start, by all accounts, has superseded what the program’s limits appeared to be when Pitino began this venture last spring.

Maybe he’s building something.

The wins and losses in the coming weeks -- and years -- will ultimately determine that.

But an odd thing happened after Wednesday’s win.

The Gophers hadn’t just defeated any Big Ten team. They’d upset Wisconsin without one of their top players.

The Gophers and Badgers hate one another. Proof?

“I tell people how much I respect [Wisconsin’s] program and Ryan and they look at me like they want to knock me out,” Pitino said.

Given the circumstances, those fans had every right to storm the court. Forget the unofficial rules about what’s proper in those situations.

Their new coach had just completed the best win of his first season. And the team that those fans love to beat more than any team in the world could have turned the Barn into their afterparty.

But they stood there and cheered. They never left their seats.

Perhaps they didn’t move because Wednesday night’s outcome is slowly becoming the new expectation in Minneapolis.

Dear U of M Alumni,

Please get a Taj Mahal-like practice facility in place. Soon.

Richard Pitino is not long for the U if the program doesn't have the "extras" that compare with the "big" programs.

He can coach. BIG programs will notice that sooner, than later.

Regards,

A fan who believes this guy can do very very well as a coach.

Jim Jackson's post game comments were interesting. The result wasn't a fluke to him. He thought Minnesota had the speed at the guards and post play that is just a bad match up for a team constructed like Wisconsin. He thought the Gophers just have the players that create bad match ups for Wisconsin. Of course it helps when you have a coach who recognizes and knows how exploit match ups.

His son sure didn't do much in that game. T Jackson would probably thrive in a more "open" offense.

Hopefully recruits take notice of what Pitino has done.

Another lead at halftime. Can we come out in the second half and not fall apart?

Is Pitino not particularly good at making adjustments, or are the players out of condition and wearing down late in games?

Does anyone have a diagnosis?

I can't watch because in our household my husband's teams seem to beat my teams 9 times out of 10.

I think Pitino has been very good at making adjustments on the fly. His team just isn't that talented - yet.

Completely agree. The end of game losses I pin more on the fact that we're simply losing to more talented teams.

And deeper benches

Its so amazing to watch. We were viewed as a team that 'lives and dies' by the 3, yet we only attempted 7 all game while racking up 48 points in the paint - because yesterday, inside was where we had the advantage.

It would be nice for him to make this a top program for coaches to want to come to.

Gophers can't allow Teague leave either

Daily Gopher:

quote:

We have defeated 15th, 17th, and 21st ranked teams. We have losses to 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 42nd ranked teams (And most of those games were winnable around the 5 minute mark with the except of Iowa and Arkansas, wow). Our Pythagorean SOS is 22nd. These are some excellent numbers.

And Richmond beat a 13th ranked UMASS team which, compounded by our win, upped our RPI to 21st! Insanity.

Hopefully Pitino can make them forget last night quickly and have them focused on Nebraska. Playing in Lincoln without Andre scares the bejesus out of me for some reason.

3 days ago, SI.com

A Few Minutes With ... Minnesota Coach Richard Pitino

SI.com: You had the biggest win of your coaching career Thursday night over Ohio State. What was that like?
Pitino: Ever since I took this job, people kept saying to me, "We haven't seen the real Williams Arenas in a while." That was the first time where the building was really alive. For our guys to get a win like that after we were picked 10th in the league was important, because that was an opportunity to prove we belonged.

SI.com: What about you? Did that prove that you belonged in the Big Ten? You're only 31 and this is just you're second season as a head coach.
Pitino: I don't look at it like that. Maybe it's because people have compared me to my father my whole life. I'm a guy with 30-something wins, and there are guys in this league with six or seven hundred. I'm just trying to prepare our guys as much as possible for each game.

SI.com: OK, since you're used to being compared to your father, tell me how you're most like him as a coach, and how are you most different?
Pitino: I hate comparing myself to a Hall-of-Famer, but he's my father so that's going to happen. I try to run my program the way he does it, just through holding everyone accountable, working hard, trying to be as organized as possible, trying to motivate everybody. We're different during games. The way he is able to focus on every single possession with such intensity as if the world is about to end, I could never coach that way.

SI.com: He once told me that you're better at this age than he was, because you're humble, whereas he didn't become humble until he was 50. Do you agree?
Pitino: Remember, while I was growing up he won a national championship at Kentucky, then he went to the national championship game the next year, then he signs this contract to be president of the Celtics. Everyone said he would set the NBA on fire and that didn't happen. So I kind of realized that you can be on top one day and on the bottom the next.

SI.com: Minnesota and Louisville are going to play each other in Puerto Rico to open next season? Why did you agree to that?
Pitino: It was ESPN's idea. We played in Maui this year and I thought the exposure and the way we played was really good for our program. In order for us to get to the level of a Michigan State and Indiana, we need to be on TV.

SI.com: How many comments do you get about how young you look? I know Josh Pastner gets a lot of them.
Pitino: Pastner probably looks a little younger than me. One thing I can tell you is that I'm in no rush to get any older.

SI.com: You have one 2-year-old daughter and a son on the way. How has becoming a dad changed your life?
Pitino: There's something to be said in this type of business, where you get wrapped up in your own little world about winning and losing and recruiting, and you come home and your daughter doesn't care. She's just excited to see you and hang out with you. It's the greatest release you could ever have.

SI.com: How is your first winter in Minneapolis treating you?
Pitino: (laughs) When you move here, everybody says you gotta embrace the weather, and nobody does it better than Minnesotans. It could be 20 degrees and you see people outside running and walking. The good thing is that even when it's cold, there's usually a bright sun. So at least it's not dreary.
