Did Al Nolen's defense make up for his substandard offense?

Tim, you know I'd never intentionally say something to cause you the remotest irritation -- I'm like the anti-Matt Dahl -- but I'm actually softening up on Ruesse a bit. He's more tolerable on the radio than in print.

I hate that fat, obtuse, gravely voiced SOB with burning white hot passion. In some ways he is worse than Souhan because he is a total f***ing sellout. When he was on the Pioneer Press he was a pretty decent writer. He would often take on the Minneapolis Brotherhood that ran everything. Ruesse knew he could never beat them, but he took great joy in exposing them and knocking their collective hat off with a snowball. Then he went to the Strib and immediately started spewing the party line from the very brotherhood he used to mock and ridicule. It dulled his wits and sports acumen as well. He is now second only to Sid in being the perpetual shill. The lowest for Ruesse was when he became the only sports talk show host to lose a debate to Warren, the guy who devotes all his time to calling in to sports talk radio. The guy who once he gets whisked off the air, callers line up to chime in on what an idiot Warren is. Callers actually lined up to tell Ruesse he was wrong and Warren was right. Then he cut off the subject.

So in many ways Ruesse is worse because he once was something good. Souhan was never good, so he essentially is what he always was.

The first I had ever heard of Reusse was on Mike Max's Sports Show. Being away from Minnesota for years, getting FSN was a God send. I watched all the shows they aired.

After about the 3rd episode of MMSS, I realized that it wasn't a joke. It took that long because:

A. The "production value" was a joke
B. They had a guy named Dark Star on there
C. It was a bunch of old fart homers sitting around arguing to no point

What else also stood out was what a jackass Reusse was. If they didn't all agree with him immediately, he sat there and sulked the entire show. He wouldn't even acknowledge when they asked him a direct question

Absolutely not. Dude was a nightmare on the offensive end. Great at getting in the lane...and then standing there wondering what the hell to do next.

Pretty sure, Tim, that Matt said that just to annoy you.

Admittedly, you construct a strong argument against him.

That show was a classic
A flat classic
Horribly constructed

It was like an accident
Couldn't get enough or turn away
Loved that show
Dark Star was plain weird
Sid was flat out crazy
Reusse was hilariously over inflated in every aspect
And Max was Max .... Way in over his head, and loving it

One great piece of unintentional comedy

Solid post from Daily Gopher:

quote:

I have no hard feelings toward Tubby and I respect him as a person and as a coach who has had a lot of success in his career. I don’t miss him.

It’s night and day on in-game coaching. We change things up on both ends of the floor, instead of keep trying to force what isn’t working. We use defense to try to dictate what the other team can do. We put guys in roles at which they can have some success. We know how to play against a zone defense. The coaching is just a ton more active.

And that’s after all of the great off season stuff. Think about what Mo did last night. Now imagine if he put all that work into changing his body in his freshman year and spent the last three working on being meaner and more aggressive and actually making use of his natural size and strength. The kids could have been a decent player, but for having a coach send him the pretty obvious message that he needed to be fitter and stronger.

And it’s not just Mo, it’s the whole team. Our laments about the lack of improvement in players in the Tubby era are well documented, but I now really think that much of it was about the apparent lack of a strength and conditioning coach. Or at least one that is competent. Now maybe the RSIIIs of the world still wouldn’t have responded with the work they would need to do, but if they could have bulked him up and gotten him to see strength as a advantage to his game, he might have been able to sniff the potential he never got anywhere near.

I had to fight the urge to throw my new HD TV out the window whenever that show appeared on the screen.

And it's still on. The only difference is LENIII has replaced Dark Star, so there's even less room at the table.

Austin Hollins better find his offensive game or he's going to start losing minutes. His defense is keeping him on the floor, but his turnovers and lack of scoring are hard to ignore.

Two losses in a row must drop them in the rankings. How far down do you think they'll drop?

Prolly not far ... everyone's losing this week.
That decent Syracuse game the Gophers played is looking more impressive all the time ... still undefeated

That used to be a HUGE rivalry.

Brought back down to reality the way it looks ...?

Yeah they hit the ground with a pretty resounding thud. We'll have to get used to it this year. Despite the excitement young Mr. Pitino has created it's still an undersized, undertalented team, trying to transition from the slow, plodding, disjointed Tubby system, to Pitino's up tempo system. You'll have games where they play above their heads and pull off an upset and you'll suffer a few beat downs because their is no favorable match up to be found.

Saw most of the game. Played well in the first half and the start of the second half, then everything went to pieces. First time they did not look composed on the court in a while. Definitely a wake up call.

Big one tonight against a suddenly cool Badgers team. Man, would be fun to knock them off at home on a bitterly cold night.

Another lead at halftime. Can we come out in the second half and not fall apart?

Is Pitino not particularly good at making adjustments, or are the players out of condition and wearing down late in games?

Does anyone have a diagnosis?

I can't watch because in our household my husband's teams seem to beat my teams 9 times out of 10.
