I hate that fat, obtuse, gravely voiced SOB with burning white hot passion. In some ways he is worse than Souhan because he is a total f***ing sellout. When he was on the Pioneer Press he was a pretty decent writer. He would often take on the Minneapolis Brotherhood that ran everything. Ruesse knew he could never beat them, but he took great joy in exposing them and knocking their collective hat off with a snowball. Then he went to the Strib and immediately started spewing the party line from the very brotherhood he used to mock and ridicule. It dulled his wits and sports acumen as well. He is now second only to Sid in being the perpetual shill. The lowest for Ruesse was when he became the only sports talk show host to lose a debate to Warren, the guy who devotes all his time to calling in to sports talk radio. The guy who once he gets whisked off the air, callers line up to chime in on what an idiot Warren is. Callers actually lined up to tell Ruesse he was wrong and Warren was right. Then he cut off the subject.

So in many ways Ruesse is worse because he once was something good. Souhan was never good, so he essentially is what he always was.

It’s night and day on in-game coaching. We change things up on both ends of the floor, instead of keep trying to force what isn’t working. We use defense to try to dictate what the other team can do. We put guys in roles at which they can have some success. We know how to play against a zone defense. The coaching is just a ton more active.

And that’s after all of the great off season stuff. Think about what Mo did last night. Now imagine if he put all that work into changing his body in his freshman year and spent the last three working on being meaner and more aggressive and actually making use of his natural size and strength. The kids could have been a decent player, but for having a coach send him the pretty obvious message that he needed to be fitter and stronger.

And it’s not just Mo, it’s the whole team. Our laments about the lack of improvement in players in the Tubby era are well documented, but I now really think that much of it was about the apparent lack of a strength and conditioning coach. Or at least one that is competent. Now maybe the RSIIIs of the world still wouldn’t have responded with the work they would need to do, but if they could have bulked him up and gotten him to see strength as a advantage to his game, he might have been able to sniff the potential he never got anywhere near.
