Oregon looked more athletic at every position. They got the 2 and 7 seeds reversed.

Garza's domination got them the seed.

Much like Ohio State's run in the B10 tournament

Gophers expected to hire Ben Johnson as next basketball coach

The Gophers are expected to hire Ben Johnson as its next men’s basketball coach, according to reports by ESPN and Stadium on Monday afternoon. This would be the first head coaching job for the Minneapolis native.

Johnson was an assistant under former Minnesota head coach Richard Pitino from 2013-18. He has been on staff at Xavier since 2018.

Johnson, a Minneapolis native and DeLaSalle graduate, was on the U staff when the program brought in its two biggest in-state recruiting wins in Hopkins’ Amir Coffey and Cretin-Derham Hall’s Daniel Oturu.

Gophers Athletics Director Mark Coyle has said recruiting is among the top attributes he sought after letting go of Ricard Pitino last Monday.

“Great to see an alum get an opportunity to rebuild the program,” former Gophers forward and current Benilde-St. Margaret’s coach Damian Johnson tweeted.

Coyle reportedly met with Johnson for “much of the day on Sunday and was ‘blown away,’ ” a source told Stadium’s Jeff Goodman.

Xavier head coach Travis Steele previously said about Johnson: “Ben is an outstanding coach and recruiter that will be a very successful head coach one day. Ben is ‘Steady Eddy,’ he just is. He is the same guy every day. He is highly intelligent, very well thought out. He’s very good at everything. He is great on the floor, he’s great in skill development, he’s got a great offensive mind and he’s got great relationships with our players. He is a really good evaluator and recruiter.

Johnson played two seasons at Northwestern and two seasons at Minnesota (2002-04). He played 59 games for the Gophers, averaging 11.5 points and 2.5 rebounds his senior season.

After his playing career, Johnson was a graduate assistant at Dayton for two years, followed by two years at Texas-Pan American, four years at Northern Iowa and one year at Nebraska with Tim Miles before joining Pitino’s staff.

Another little to no experience guy

High level recruiter

Amir Coffey

And....

???

Nice and cheap. Good job Coyle!

It's working out with Whalen on the women's side too! No experience, no problem!

But he's a home town guy. Wheeee!

It's a joke, like the B10, so no worries. Nothing to see here.

Yeah, loosening the purse strings for an established head coach would have been nice. We'll see how it plays out. Coyle's previous hires were Fleck and Motzko. I'd say those worked out pretty well, so far. Whalen was a calculated roll of the dice. We'll see how she works out long term.

They hired Ben Johnson to get Holmgren. Plain and simple. Probably already a better coach then Pitino and will probably get his former coach (From DeLasalle high school in Minneapolis) Thorson to help him.

Surprised but I think it might work.

Johnson isn't getting Holmgren. Not a chance. Chet is pretty well signed sealed and delivered to Gonzaga.

Not according to local AAU coaches. Chet hasn't signed yet and his dad played for the U of M.....even if we don't get Chet; Pitino wasn't liked by the local AAU coaches.

He's not coming to a bad team with a rookie HC for his one year of college.

Just like how people thought Whalen would get us Paige Bueckers.

(We had a better chance of getting Paige - and she was NOT coming here).

one really good season out of each of the first two.

and the assistant coaching experience is plenty.

Um

Ok

There are others with more head coaching experience more qualified. But didn't check certain boxes.

Oh, well, more mediocrity. Par for the course.

One thing to remember. Last coaching hire at U of MN. Shaka was my favorite followed by Saul Phillips and Tim Miles. Shaka's record at Texas is the same as Pitino's and Miles isn't coaching and Phillips is at Northern State. A good to great coach at SDSU, Utah State, Cleveland St, or Chicago Loyala isn't a guarantee so he had to think outside of the box.

Chet has not signed anywhere yet and his Dad went to the U......and AAU coaches really like Ben. We will see.

Nothing worse than watching a talented Gopher team not win a Big Ten game on the road, lose the last six games, and struggle on offense all year. What is the worse thing that can happen....we were a 2nd to last place team in the conference with Pitino.

Johnson talked more about a phone call with Izzo than his time with Pitino

Speaks volumes.

I couldn't stand to watch the Gophers this year and it prob was Pitino's 2nd or 3rd best roster (Roster with Murphy and Coffey together their last year had to be his best). His offense is PG freelance w/o a true set that I can see. Plus he doesn't have a defense....should have just went with a Syracuse 2-3 because he doesn't press or play a tight man to man or trap.

The test for Johnson will not be keeping guys like Holmgren in state. Those guys will always go to a blue blood program. Johnson has as much chance of landing Holmgren as he does of getting Suggs to forgo the draft, enter the transfer portal and come home. Sure, Chet's dad went to Minnesota, but he wasn't anywhere near Chet's level as a prospect. AAU coaches may like Ben, but Holmgren has 4 year recruiting relationships with the head coaches of pretty much every blue blood program in the country.

The key will be getting those next tier guys to come here. Wisconsin has done well every year and Minnesota kids always seem to play a prominent role on those teams. There are a lot of good Minnesota players not named Chet Holmgren. There were a lot of good ones not named Suggs last year. The problem is that Pitino always got skunked on those guys with a couple of exceptions.

Bring back Clem Haskins. Cheated like hell and won games as a result.

Amazing how some teams get caught and pay a high price.....while others don't.

Hey
@DWolfsonKSTP
so many former MN high school basketball players entered the transfer portal. Who are actual options for the Gophers we should keep an eye on? Ben is making moves and growing on me so far... Let’s hope he can land some of these guys!

He's personally talked to El-Amin, Thompson, Fox, and Battle... with more likely to come. No talks to date with the Madsen brothers.

Gotta assume Garcia is on that list if he officially decides to leave. Do you expect Kenny and Treyton to stay committed? I also feel like a couple more gophers will enter the transfer portal...

When I talked to Treyton when he committed, he was all about Minnesota, home state, name on front of jersey.

Carr wants to be a pro. Transfer portal is a fallback plan. Best bet is to plan as if he won’t be here.

Pac 12 played a fairly abbreviated schedule with COVID. Wonder if that had anything to do with their success in the tourney. They look more fresh, IMO. UCLA and Oregon State in the elite eight? Cmon now.

Oregon looked like one of the more physically gifted teams in the tournament. Great athletes all over the place.
