It was complete wishful thinking to believe that Johnson was going to flip Holmgren's commitment at this stage of the game. I heard Kevin Lynch commenting on the topic during state tournament. He said that Holmgren had already made his choice quite awhile ago and was just waiting until after the tournament to announce it. Recruiting wins involving 5 star recruits are the culmination of many years of contact between the college coach, the recruit, his high school coaches, his AAU coaches, parents, etc. Holmgren had already settled on Gonzaga. It was unrealistic to think that was going to change because the Gophers changed coaches.

Future Holmgren / Suggs types are going to continue to be long shots until a coach can build a winning program. Five stars are going to play for programs that are perennial Final Four schools. They are one and done, so they are looking for the biggest stage to show case their talent in the coming year.

Where Johnson can succeed is with the Minnesota kids who are right behind the Holmgren / Suggs types. The ones that Pitino failed miserably to get and who went to other schools and became core players for other winning, although not necessarily blue blood, programs. Win those recruiting battles and raise the stock of the program and the Holmgren / Suggs / Jones caliber players come within reach down the road.

There was a less than 0% chance of Holmgren coming here.

Even if he had a relationship with Johnson, kids like Holmgren don't go to a loser school to spend their 1 year being coached by a rookie HC.

I mean Paige Bueckers grew up absolutely idolizing Whalen, and we had absolutely no shot at her either.

You have to establish a winning program and culture to get the studs to even consider you. Maybe Johnson is the guy to do that, but even if he is, it'll take a while.

It'll be interesting to see if the Minnesota to Gonzaga pipeline continues after this year. Pretty impressive that they'll have Top 3 draft picks in back-to-back years with Minnesota kids.

Absolutely. The first 5 star Minnesota kid who the Gophers have a reasonable shot at hasn't even started middle school yet. And that's absolute best case scenario. It assumes that Johnson hits the ground running and manages to build this into a winning program that is can overachieve early and be a Cinderella team in the NCAA tournament. That's how hard it is to recruit in college basketball.

Chicken/egg. Can't get the studs to create a winning program so you won't get enough time to build a winning program. Gopher basketball for 30 years.

Not exactly the issue. Need to be able to coach and recruit. Gopher Football has had that issue until Fleck (Kill could somewhat recruit and was a good coach as was Claeys better coach than recruiter).

Pitino could somewhat recruit (mostly transfers) and somewhat coach. I still don't know what kind of system Pitino ran. He came in talking pressure defense, fast break offense and that never materialized.

The hope for Johnson is that he coaches up the lower recruits.....Pitino had some very talented guys but he never had a good bench because he couldn't coach up those 2 & 3 star glue guys.

Robbins, Carr, Coffey, Oturu, and Murphy would succeed any where they went.

The universe just continues to rain shit on Gopher basketball. Division II All-American forward Parker Fox injured his knee in workouts. He is expected to miss 6-9 months after surgery. It's getting to the point that Johnson is going to have to suit up the towel boy and the arena staff just to put a team on the floor.

Gophers coach Ben Johnson received some timely news Thursday as the commitment from 6-foot-9 Stephen F. Austin transfer Charlie Daniels provides some much-needed depth in a thin frontcourt.

Daniels, who played the last two seasons at SFA in Texas, averaged 4.6 points and 3.5 rebounds for the Lumberjacks last season. He had four double-figure scoring games in 2020-21, including 14 points against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

"It was a surreal moment to get to be on the biggest stage," Daniels told the Star Tribune on Thursday. "I'm ready to be a Gopher."

The 230-pound Jacksonville, Fla., native who goes by the nickname "Big Country" was offered a scholarship by the Gophers during a zoom meeting with Johnson and Gophers assistant coach Marcus Jenkins on Wednesday. He's the first of seven newcomer transfers who can play both frontcourt spots.

"My presence in the middle and controlling the paint I can bring to the table," said Daniels, who is graduating with a criminal justice degree. "I think I'm a verbal leader. So, I can give a lot of direction in the frontcourt."

In 2018-19, Daniels averaged 10.6 points, a team-high 7.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in his second season at Indian River State College in Florida.

"I think he has a chance to help them set the right culture," Indian River State College coach Charlie Wilson said. "He's a big body and really physical. He's going to be one of the older guys on the team. He's got 50 Division I games of experience. It's going to give him an opportunity to lead."

The Gophers took a big hit in the post for next season when 6-8 Division II Northern State All-American transfer and Mahtomedi native Parker Fox was sidelined for up to six months after knee surgery.

"He's got a bright future," Johnson said during a zoom interview Thursday. "He's gonna have a big-time career for us. If he's able to come back [this season], great, and if he's not he'll recover fully and be ready to go next year."

Johnson and his staff still have four scholarships remaining for next season to give the Gophers more punch in the post.

Boston College senior forward Steffon Mitchell, a Shakopee native, remains in constant contact with the Gophers, who are among his final three schools with San Diego State and Utah.

Mississippi 6-11 grad transfer Khadim Sy included Minnesota among his four finalists on Thursday, joining Clemson, Wake Forest, and East Carolina. Sy posted on Instagram that he will announce his college decision next Wednesday.

Carr entered the transfer portal in March before turning pro. Sources said he will still consider transferring, though he doesn't have a school list yet.

"He's been focused on the draft, so he hasn't thought about it," one source said. "He will definitely be looking at options."

A 6-foot-2 guard from Toronto, Carr earned third-team All-Big Ten honors last season after averaging 19.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. He was one of the most explosive guards in college basketball, scoring 30 or more points on four occasions, including a 41-point performance in a February loss to Nebraska.

Carr spent his freshman season at Pittsburgh before transferring to Minnesota for the past two seasons. As a redshirt sophomore, Carr averaged 15.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game while shooting a career-high 36.1% from 3-point range.

He was the No. 1 transfer in ESPN's transfer rankings before turning pro and has returned to the top of the rankings.

Eric Curry's playing days were finished. He was ready to work for the Gophers men's basketball team as a graduate assistant this fall.

But after a change of heart, Curry announced Tuesday on Instagram that he will return to play a sixth season for the Gophers. His coaching career can wait.

"Let's have one last dance, Gopher fans," Curry wrote on Instagram.

The 6-9 Curry has played three seasons with the Gophers and missed two with knee injuries. He can play next season because the NCAA is allowing all student-athletes another year of eligibility because of the pandemic disrupted their seasons last school year.

Curry went to new Gophers coach Ben Johnson with the idea of playing another season just last Friday. After the holiday weekend, the team was ready to make it official.

"I'm so incredibly excited for Eric," Johnson said in a statement. "I'm happy with how he is feeling physically first and foremost, and that he is hungry to compete and lead for one more year. I know he is pumped to be able to wear the Maroon and Gold and we are just as thrilled to have him back with us."

Curry will get another chance to play with his best friend, Payton Willis, who transferred back to Minnesota from the College of Charleston.

Curry averaged 3.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per game last season. He was mostly used in a reserve role behind former center Liam Robbins but started eight games.

Unbelievable. The University of St. Thomas got an in state, national top 100 recruit right out of the gate. Ahjany Lee from Byron, MN and Totino-Grace has committed to the Tommies for 2022. Why has this been so hard for the Gophers?

Jalen Suggs says he would have played for Gophers if Pitino recruited him more
The former Minnehaha Academy star and current Orlando Magic guard's comments came on a recent podcast and deal another blow to Richard Pitino's legacy of in-state recruiting.

Minnesota basketball fans can see Jalen Suggs live and in person on Nov. 1 when the Orlando Magic — who selected Suggs No. 5 overall in the NBA Draft after a standout freshman season at Gonzaga — play the Timberwolves at Target Center.

But a recent Suggs appearance on the Road Trippin' podcast suggests Minnesota fans could have seen a lot more of Suggs over the last year if things had gone a little differently with the way he was recruited at Minnehaha Academy.

It helps to remember that Suggs was a legitimate two-sport star in football and basketball and won Mr. Football and Mr. Basketball in the state as a senior.

"Sophomore year going into junior year, I am ready to commit to Minnesota," Suggs said on the podcast. "I'm like, 'I'm ready to go, ready to do both sports. I'll play with P.J. (Fleck). You know, the basketball I'll do it. ... I just need a little more from the basketball side."

Um, a little more from the basketball side?

"It was, they didn't come to recruit," Suggs continued. They didn't come to many games. Like, they weren't at practice. ... I never really had too much interaction with (former head coach Richard) Pitino. He's cool. Like the times we did talk, he's good people. But ... if he would have just came a little more and showed interest like he actually wanted me to be there, then I think it would have been easy. I honestly would have chopped it up and probably committed my late junior year."

Gee why couldn't we get players to stay home to play basketball. It's like when James Lauranitus was asked why he played football for Ohio State instead of Minnesota. Turns out Mason never recruited him.
