I thought before the game statrted that NU might give them trouble on their floor but when the Gophers got out to a double digit lead I was feeling confident in a road win. Tubby and his team just yanked my heart right out of my chest. Absolutely a horrible lose

Does Tubby have any commitments from any True PG's because Joseph isn't one

That's a huge problem right now. Cobb is useless. Joseph drives in, and is lost. Gets caught in traffic and has nowhere to go with the ball.

Joseph is 2G playing point by default. I don't know how good or bad Cobbs really because frankly, Tubby's half court offense scheme's really suck. We better hope Devoe's younger brother comes here.

why they decided to just lob it around the perimeter of a 1-3-1 that NW deployed is beyond me. It was not surprising, because they'll just continue to struggle with it, as they have for the past couple of years.

You are correct, our philosophy against the 1-3-1 is so far beyond passive it's unbelievable.  We pass it between the two guards on top until there's 10-15 seconds left on the shot clock, then either make a hurried drive or launch a 3.  I can't believe that Tubby and his staff can't get a little more creative, but their schemes against man defense aren't much better.  Of course, without good guards it's hard to create many good offensive opportunities.

I am starting to think that Tubby had these guys playing WAY over their heads last year.  We didn't lose anyone of importance, but we have regressed quite a bit.  Damian Johnson is a shell of himself from last year, Westbrook is as frustrating as ever but now he has the my ____ don't stink attitude, and I was wrong about Joseph running the offense more effectively.  For the rest of the year, I'd give R. Williams and Carter a lot of burn and try to get more athletic.

My favorite part is when they extend the zone and push our guards all the way back to the half court line.

Strib:

With the Gophers needing a miracle finish to get into the NCAA tournament, coach Tubby Smith told reporters Wednesday that he might start Colton Iverson and Ralph Sampson III when his team faces No. 14 Wisconsin Thursday night at Williams Arena.

He said either Lawrence Westbrook or Devoe Joseph would come off the bench in that scenario. Blake Hoffarber would likely move to point guard.

Smith used the Twin Towers lineup for the majority of the 2008-09 season but he's rarely employed the combo this season.

"We may, depends on how big, we'll probably look at Ralph and Colton in the lineup together," Smith said. "That's something that's starting to materialize as we go down [the stretch]. And I think a lot of it has to do with the teams that you're matched up against. Who can they guard and how much zone we play, how much man to man we play and how much we press. All those things will dictate."

Smith said the duo will help the team on the boards and allow both big men to play where they're most comfortable.

"I think they give us a high-low look that we haven't really had ... some real beef," he said. "Probably gives Ralph a chance to get away from the basket because he's more comfortable ... away from the basket. And Colton is more of a physical player inside. That's what I think we'll do. ... We've played them in practice some together but not much."
One source close to the team said the lineup switch might be the team's last shot to turn things around. "That might save us," he said.

Hoffarber probably will be OK offensively as a point. Is definitely, overall the best passer on this team (not saying much, given how terribly they pass).

A little more than two weeks away from the conference tourney and you're experimenting with point guards? There's something seriously wrong with Tubby Smith basketball right now.

I expected, at worse, a .500 conference team. The top of the conference is good, not great, and the bottom is really not good. Second division in this conference is really embarrassing.

The experimentation, to me, shows how poorly Cobbs has developed. It was Nolan's team, and his loss has broken down any flow the offense had.

Not that it had much to start with.

Lob pass

Lob pass

lob pass

all around the permimeter.

Hoist a 3 or turn the ball over.

It seems like if he does that, then he will have to have a 3 man rotation with the third being Carter

Good first half for the team-baldies (aka Gophers)

The lineup change has worked ok vs Badgers so far.

Despite the positives, typical Westbrook. Vanished in the first half, no points.

Finally tapped into some of that potential. No way this team should have lost like they did recently.

A win over the Badgers is always nice, no matter how badly the season has gone.

The Gophers have been missing that quality all season, but with a show of support for junior forward Paul Carter they found their groove, played with poise and hustled like they haven't in weeks.
"We saw some real solidarity, some real teamwork," coach Tubby Smith said.
The Gophers looked a lot like the close-cropped Badgers, literally, with freshly shaved heads to honor Carter's younger sister, Bria, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.
"Paul's a great leader. He's a very spiritual guy, a very emotional guy, so I think he really appreciated it," said Damian Johnson, who added 11 points.
Hoffarber, the nation's leading 3-point shooter, wasn't just camping out behind the circle as he sometimes does. He ran off screens and flashed to the lane a few times, too, and put himself in perfect position for some long rebounds.

Looks like Tubby can coach a little.
Putting Hoffarber on the move wasn't such a bad idea.

IMO

A pretty silly decision by Bo Ryan not to play much zone. MN can't handle a 1-3-1. Anyone's.

Shaved heads in solidarity for Paul Carter's 13 year old sister, diagnosed w/cancer.

Best wishes to the family.

Am headed to the barn Sat night for the Indiana game. Hopefully the same intensity and a positive result vs Crean and the Hosers.

The disappearance of Westbrook was due to the Gophers going big for most of the night. That worked great. I think I saw the best game of Hoffarber. Usually his game consists of him making the 3's. Last night he was taking mid range jumpers and rebounding well. Playing like that will make him a better pro prospect

Johnson had a good game also. The senior leadership was there. Best game I've seen the Gophers play all year

I'm betting against a zone you wouldn't see the same type of game with Hoffarber. Again, Bo Ryan should have gone zone.

MN vs Zones = Lousy

Watched part of the game last night and the effort was the exact opposite of the last game I saw against MI. It looked like they not only wanted to be out there but they also cared about the outcome. It was refreshing.

On a side note, did anyone else notice the chant coming from the student section? It sounded like "F--- Bo Ryan", but I wasn't sure. Anyone confirm? At one point they had the camera on Ryan and I noticed one of the women behind the bench (WI player's mom perhaps?) yelling "F--- you" to the student section. It looked a tad heated there!?!

Jake I keep hearing Ryan, but couldn't make out what preceded it. I was trying to see if it was crybaby Ryan because it kept happening when he didn't like a call

Didn't Bo Ryan get a technical foul last night? Does anyone know what that was about?

As far as the student chants - that stuff really bugs me because I think it lacks class, but to be fair their hockey fans did the same to our fans last year when the Badgers hosted the Gopher women in the playoffs (if my memory is correct). The stuff they were yelling was pretty ugly.

Ryan got t'd up. Guy that reffed and t'd him up works in the Twins front office. Read that in the Strib on line.

Bo was crying about another call.

Sure seems like he and Izzo whine the most about officiating in the Big 10.

I may have been correct with my assumption on what they were chanting based on this from USAToday:
quote:

The student section had an edge, too, frequently mocking Badgers coach Bo Ryan with an obscene chant and tossing harmless objects at the handful of brave Wisconsin fans penetrating the sea of gold with their red wear.

I basically agree with you, Lynn. Before I had kids, I probably would have found some humor in that chant. However, since my kids have brought out my uptight side, I would've been annoyed if I had my kids at that game.
