WTF was that?

Frustrating ending to a great comeback.

Bad coaching to wait so long. Gotta design something quick. Didn't HAVE to look for Hoffarber. Give someone else an open look. Took way too much time off the clock and stuck with a desperation contested shot.

Missed the Gophs, probably a good thing.

Agree w/Scott. They were good early, reality is setting in. May get in the field of 64.

2-10/0-5 on 3's from Nolen is not going to get it done.

2-14 from the arc in total. Man, Tubby needs some shooters.

24-27 from the free throw line is impressive. On to Purdue, sinking in the conference too quickly.

Hopefully we can take something from how we played the last 10 minutes of the game.  I think we need to run more and get in transition because our halfcourt offense sucks (just like it has the last 3 years).  On the bright side, we gave OSU a helluva game and they are really, really good.  Hollins needs to play more to make up for the loss of Joseph's scoring, I think he has a bright future.  Good athlete, nice shot, good defender, and plays with some emotion.  Maybe he can give some of that to Sampson.

Tubby must have done something to piss off the scheduling geniuses at the B10.  In the first five games, we play the four best teams in the conference, all on the road.

Gophers are plagued by the same crap. An underachieving Sampson. A lack of anybody that can create his own shot. And in general finding a way to lose winnable games.

The half court offense just can't find a way to get Hoff open shots either

Been bugging me for years.

Hoff has really expanded his game more than I ever thought he would by becoming a very good passer and solid rebounder, but he's still, at heart, a catch and shoot guy. He doesn't create, he doesn't shoot as well off the bounce, he doesn't shoot contested shots well.

Tubby needs to look at the NBA careers of Reggie Miller and Rip Hamilton to see how to spring jumpshooters open.

Or even, on the college level, to JJ Redick.

Though one thing I will say in Tubby's defense; it's probably too late.

The biggest reason all 3 of those guys have succeeded, IMO, is conditioning. Rip and Miller were extremely well conditioned; ditto for Redick, among the best in the country. That's why they could run around like rabbits in a halfcourt set to find openings. Hoffarber's not at that level of conditioning, and can't get there now; that's work that has to be done in the summer/fall.

Doesn't mean they can't use him more effectively/find ways to get him open with screens more, etc. though of course.

Tuby has to take the heat for not developing Iverson or Sampson, or admit they both were bad recruits. Iverson still has hands of stone, if the pass isn't perfect, he's probably turning it over, and Sampson has no inside presence, no desire to get to balls like Mbakwe.

Its sad because every few games he'll show flashes of 'fire' - but its gone just as quickly.

Strikes me as a kid who just isn't very passionate about basketball.

Put Dusty Rychart's passion and grit in Samson's body and you'd have an NBA All-Star.

Iverson is exactly what I expected, no complaints there. Sampson has not developed as we would like, but the talk of him being a total bust is oversold. He's not a physical type of player, but I don't know who expected that.

Disagree Skillz -- the difference between Hoffarber and JJ is fundamentally athleticism. JJ, while by no means elite, has solid athleticism, especially for college. He actually has decent quickness and some bounce. Hoffarber has neither of those things. JJ can shoot on the move far more effectively than Hoffarber because he can elevate more. Hoffarber cannot hang in the air long enough to shoot effectively while on the move.

Hoffarber also just is not quick enough to get open off tons of screens like JJ did. He doesn't explode off screens because he's just not quick enough in change of direction. And, he doesn't utilize the pump fake nearly as well as Redick does (one of the best I've ever seen with it). That's why, when people yell that Tubby should run Blake off more screens, I cringe. D-1 teams don't generally allow wide-open shots off a simple down screen. The player has to be both athletic and know how to use the screen effectively. Blake hasn't shown much ability to do either.

I don't disagree with that, Pete. Redick is more athletic/taller, and actually a better shooter too, IMO.

But on top of that, to run around all game like that (as all 3 of those guys do/did) you have to be very well conditioned. And I think Hoffarber fails that test as well, IMO. That was my only point.

I actually think Iverson should get more PT. He's obviously got his flaws, but he just plays so much more active than Ralph, IMO.

Trevor Mbakwe arrested, jailed

These aren't exactly glory times for the Gophers men's basketball team.

Junior forward Trevor Mbakwe was arrested for violating a restraining order, and as of Monday night he was being held in a Ramsey County jail cell.

Mbakwe currently leads the Gophers with 13.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game.

KSTP TV contributed to this report.

He apparently friend requested (or someone using his account did) his ex-girlfriend. With the release of Firesheep I am going to go ahead and assume he's innocent until I hear otherwise.

That is terrible and why couldn't they just call him and tell him that wasn't legal either. No they had to make a big deal out of it

Stupid or not there was a restraining order against him that said explicitly that he was not to attempt to contact this woman. He poked her face book page, which is by any definition an attempt at communication. He should have known better. I don't think this merits any suspension, but he should have known better.
