They obviously have not said anything, but I don't think Nolen is completely back. I don't know if it's physical or mental, but he made Taylor look completely silly a few times with his defense but he was otherwise mediocre in an area where he generally shines.

I don't understand the defense the Gophers play. If they play man to man they are 5-10 feet from their guy while teams always have someone inside Hoffaber's jersey with him. Gohers could use mor outside shooters other then Joseph and Hoff

Tubby has always had his ball-line defensive philosophy:

1. Apply constant ball pressure.
2. Contest every shot.
3. Retreat quickly to the ball line.
4. Do not allow penetrating passes or dribble penetration.
5. Allow non-penetrating passes, ones that do not move the ball closer to the basket.
6. Always see the ball and your man.
7. Attempt to intercept all lobs and bounce passes.
8. Jump to the ball on every pass.
9. Communicate (talk -- use verbals)
10. Make all players DOC (dead on the catch).

It prevents a lot of baskets around the hoop, but the trade-off is some uncontested three point looks. This year the Gophers are best in the conference in two point defense but worst in defending the three. I think the issue is we don't have the right personnel anymore. Damien Johnson was kinda the glue guy on defense that helped mesh the guards with the bigs, and he could quickly scamper out and deflect a shot. Williams or Hollins could definitely be that guy, but neither is there. I like the system, but would not mind letting our bigs try and do their thing (I'm pretty confident with our inside defense this year) once in a while.

Strib:

The Gophers won't have junior guard Devoe Joseph against Indiana Tuesday and he could be out longterm, Tubby Smith said Monday.
"Devoe wasn't at practice for the last couple of days but that's the only issues that we've had so far," Smith said. "He's working on some things he's got to work on ... some of everything. ... It could be [longterm]."
Joseph missed the team's first six games for violating team rules. Since his return last month, he's averaged 11.3 points per game.
Joseph, Canada's national prep player of the year during his senior year of high school, blossomed during a performance in last season's Big Ten tournament. He earned all-Big Ten tourney honors after leading the Gophers to the title game.

Grades are due tomorrow, I know because I am still waiting on two. Hard to say if it is or isn't. Disappointing, though.

Source: Devoe Joseph tells Gophers coach Tubby Smith he's transferring

It appears Devoe Joseph has played his last game for the Gophers.

Suspended for skipping a recent practice, Joseph informed coach Tubby Smith on Monday afternoon he plans to transfer, a source close to the "U" basketball program said.

The 6-foot-3 guard from Pickering, Ontario, also was suspended for the season's first six games for off-the-field problems. Since returning, Joseph was averaging 11.2 points in eight games for the Gophers, who are 11-3 entering Tuesday's Big Ten home opener against Indiana.

Smith may try to convince Joseph to stay, the source said. But unless something drastic changes, the Gophers will be moving forward without him.

It sounds like a child's temper tantrum. "You're going to make me sit out a game? I'm taking my ball and I'm going to play with another team. Wah, wah, wah."

Hey Devoe

You don't get in trouble for skipping a class...you DO for skipping Practice.

Even Allan Iverson knows what Practice is.

A good friend of mine is an uncle to Devoe and Corey. He told me his sister micro managed both they're high school career's. My friend Cal played hockey in the pro's, and he coach's a high school team now, his daughter plays college soccer and his son is a good hockey player, so when he talks about kids in sports, he has some cred. He tried to tell his sister she was hurting her kids chance's to succeed at the next level. He told me Devoe is a spoiled kid as is Corey. Cal set up a visit for Corey with Buzz Williams, the Marquette coach, and at the last minute his sister canceled the trip. The Gophers had no chance at Corey as the boy's mother didn't want the spot light being taken by one or the other. Devoe has a lot of talent, but needs to grow up and learn to play defense. I haven't talked to Cal about this, as he is battling neck cancer, but he told me this last fall that Devoe and Tuby's relationship was not good.

Devoe unfortunately is a spoiled kid who can't get along with authority, not terribly intelligent, and probably smokes too much pot. I'm all for Tubby standing up to him and telling him not to let the door hit him where the good Lord split him.

I'm also 100% behind Tuby. I hated seeing the why the Humphrey clan try to run the team. Speaking of him, he is now dating Kim Kardashian.

Yeah, you're right panndder. This team played pretty well without him earlier in the year, and let's hope they can rise above this now. I am pretty worried about next year though. Who plays point -- Ahanmisi? They do have a talented freshman coming in named Andre Hollins, but I don't know if he's ready to be a B10 PG. It might be time for Tubby to comb the juco ranks.

I think Gopherfan34 called it. Devoe's mom emailed Myron Metcalf at about 3:00 AM and is flying to Minnesota to be with Devoe.

We're going to be thin at point next year, for sure. Ahamisi can be a competent backup, from what I've seen. Andre Hollins is legit from everything I have seen, but he's more of a combo guard than a true point guard. Will be interest to see how things shape up.

I'm shocked at how well Humphries is playing in The League.
Never thought his game would translate there.
One of those guys who is a better pro than he was a collegian.

It took him awhile to "get it". I think he had to realize he was never going to be the scorer that he wanted to be, that it was OK to pass to teammates, and that when you're his size and have that type of athleticism, and a decent amount of skill, you can be a good NBA player by just working your ass off.

Other than Mbakwe, the Gophers big men especially Sampson suck flat out. Throw in a point guard that can't score and we're looking from the bottom up.

That was really ugly, but a MUCH needed win. The next 2 are going to be killer.

Nice to see Williams play well and provide a huge spark. If he can ever become half the basketball player that he is an athlete, he'll be a superstar.
