You'd be shocked at the immense difference, mainly athletically, between D-1 quality basketball players and even the absolute best intramural players at a university. The answer to your question is yes, it really is that difficult to find.

Sounds about right. The problem, as you've more or less stated, is that Ahanmisi, Armelin, and Hollins are absolutely not ready to play 25-30 mins a night of Big 10 basketball. I think Tubby will do a lot of playing the hot hand. Some nights, Ahanmisi will get the majority of the minutes. Other nights, it will be Armelin or Hollins. Regardless, expect to see a lot of full-court press against the Gophers. I'm especially worried about quick PGs giving us fits in later games.

Status: offline 		I am sorry about my opinions on Al Nolen. I have been convinced I was wrong. Al Nolen is more important that I was giving him credit for. We will struggle to make the NCAA without him on the court. Our other options are too young and inexperienced.

He is not a scorer, but he does take care of the ball and defends well. Not all PG are scores, but guys that get the others involved. Now he can use some more work at that since his assists aren't high

Status: offline 		I call it the ESPN syndrome: every player should look like the highlights we see. If Al Nolen is not Kemba Walker or John Wall, what business does he have occupying a Big Ten scholarship? There are ~30 NFL quarterbacks or MLB first basemen so the playing field is much more level. There are 120 starting point guards for BCS teams, and their careers are 1-4 years instead of 8+ in the other aforementioned situations. Nolen is not the best point guard out there, but he's hardly anything to scoff at and would be a contributor on pretty much any team (insert exception which has two very good point guards below) out there.

Status: offline 		I don't think Nolen's terrible or anything; he's just not that good. He doesn't really do anything all that well. He's an atrocious shooter, he's not a good penetrator, he's not all that great as a passer, and I'd rate his defense as okay, but nothing special. Ideally on a really good NCAA team he is not a starting PG.

As for Tubby, I think it's okay to have a mix in today's game. Rodney Williams may well go in the draft this year, and he's just a sophomore. Tubby coached Rajon Rondo, who left after 2 years.

And really, it doesn't matter if they're a one and done guy or not to me wrt this. I just think he can, and should, find a better PG, whether it's a one and done guy or a guy that is going to stay all 4 years.

I hope both develop. Hollins has shown that he has a better shot, but hasn't pulled the trigger much in game. Williams has a higher ceiling, and could be a lot more than just a solid contributor if he hones his game.

He's improved. He was dealing with some pretty serious family issues (mind not have been totally on basketball) last season while he was playing. He's been playing injured most of this season, too. Even so, the numbers have shown some improvement.

I don't see it. His Jr year is the only time there has been an uptick in his FG% - he's right back to his Fr. and So. shooting this year. He is getting to the line more this year, so his TS%, but his eFG% is below his career average.

You can pretty much chalk up any per game numbers to an increase in minutes and usage, but his rates (outside of FTAs) are not really any different as a Sr. as they were as a Fr.

To me, his shooting as a Junior looks like an outlier when you compare it to his other 3 years.

You must not have seen many games this year, Williams isn't even close to being NBA ready.

I agree he's not ready, and I think if he does go, both he and the team that draft him will regret it. He's much more of an athlete than a basketball player, and those guys usually don't do so well.

But he could very well come out, and he's a 1st rder in a lot of mocks, or at least has been this year. Purely based on his athleticism.

Status: offline 		Isn't NW considered one of the best defensive pressure teams in the nation? If we can handle them, we can handle most anyone. I was more frustrated with turnovers by our guards (especially Nolen) in our last few games than I was last night. They weren't perfect handling the pressure last night....but they did well enough.
