Tubby has the wrong guy handling the ball. Hoffarber should not be the primary ball handler in those situations. You can't tell me Armelin isn't capable of doing a better job. He's a point guard - has probably played the position his entire life. And he's a D-I player in a major conference. There's a reason MN was interested in him as a point guard. Let him handle the ball.

Or Maverick. I know it's crunch time. I also know Mav can be sloppy, especially w/passing.

It's so painful to watch this team bring the ball up the floor.

It was refreshing to see Armelin stay in the game, with Williams where he needed to be: SITTING.

The whole rally started when they had the big run, with 3 freshman on the floor at the guard and "wing" spots.

So...

The Tubby-to-Georgia Tech rumors (long speculated) have really started to pick up here down South. And it makes a ton of sense.

What's Tubby's contract situation? And who do you guys think would replace him? I know Flip has been mentioned by you, Tim. And I could see that for sure.

Tubby is still (obviously) under contract next season but after this season is complete he has no real penalty from losing. Everything I've heard about GT is their coach has a contract that resets every year and it would be very expensive to buy him out, so I wonder if they'd be able to do that and then pay Tubby what it would take to lure him.

I think Saunders is getting sick of the NBA (and might not have a job soon) so I could easily see that. He (or at least his family) lives in the Twin Cities still, and his daughters go to the U.

Thanks man. I really think the GT thing will happen. Their fans are really sick of Hewitt---he's been barely hanging on for years now there---and Tubby obviously makes more sense than just about anyone with his ties in the state/area and how much local talent there is in Atlanta to be able to build quickly.

I'd think it's more than a 50/50 shot that it happens this year.

If Flip still has a job with the Wizards he will stay there. If he gets fired when Tubby leaves the Gophers unfortunately will beat a path to his door. Maturi unfortunately suffers under the delusion that Flip is a good coach.

I don't know, Tim. I could see Flip working in the college game. I think he'd recruit really well, especially in-state. And he'd have a system that college kids love. I could see it working.

As an aside, reading his bio, I had no idea that he and Dungy were roommates in college. That's kind of crazy.

Dustin, that is a possibility. Flip did really well in the CBA when he was running the whole show. Recruiting, signing and coaching players. Maybe it will translate to the college game. As a coach I just think Flip is a balless wonder who allows the inmates to run the asylum. Discipline and skills development are not exactly strong suits and I don't know how well having a playbook the size of a set of encyclopedias will work in the college game.

I think it will come down to his assistants if that happens. If he can have some assistants who are good at relating concepts in a simple way to college kids, I think he can be successful. I'd see him as a bit of Calipari-lite. Calipari is not a great coach IMO. But he'll always have his college teams be decent because of his recruiting (hopefully Flip is not nearly as shady/slimy in that dept.) and style that kids love to play. Especially after Walberg got him to start using his system.

I guess my expectations are lower; I have felt the same about football. I don't expect MN to compete with Michigan and Ohio State right now (talking general terms, not the last couple years in Michigan's case), but I expect them to be competitive and step up the program to hopefully something close to a Wisconsin level-program, and then you go from there, get a better coach to take you another step, etc.

That's how I feel about bball too. They're not an elite program and aren't going to draw an elite coach, but you get a solid coach that consistently has the program up a notch further than its been. And then you incrementally take more steps. I think Flip would not be a terrible hire at this juncture fitting into that mold, assuming Tubby does leave.

Sweens, pannder, do you guys think Tubby would leave after this season?

He sure looked worn out during that game Tuesday.

Personally, I've become more disappointed in his coaching as the year has gone along.

College BB means kids aren't normally going to stay all 4 years, in the good player scenario, so frosh need to get going sooner than later.
At least the top-notch guys.

But look at the progress/lack of it. Yes, a lot of kids are going to have ups and downs, but Sampson/Iverson/Williams haven't improved
as they've needed to. It may, in some cases, be the talent, and in others, the coaching. But at some point, they needed to be better.

I keep reading that Sampson sulks if not starting. That irks me to no end. Tough $#(*&*#& sit a whole game then if you want to pout.
Play the kids who bust their butts.

And while they're inconsistent, those 3 freshman needed to play more earlier this year.

His whole point guard fiasco, and the team's inability to play defense vs the 3 are disappointments. The 3 is a college BB staple.

I understand the big guys / pound it inside mentality.

When Nolen went down, he turned to a senior, a leader.
And a guy who can't make the plays off the dribble a point needs to make.

And it's had a huge impact in his game. Hoffarber needs to be the wing/sniper, and is using up too much energy just trying to run the show.

They should have been better than this. Injuries/defections have had an impact, but this implosion is just plain awful, and the onus is on the coach.

So if he wants to leave?

Let him.

Before the year started, I'd have been really against letting Tubby leave.

Now, the program is better than with Monson. But that was not going to take much.

Wholeheartedly agree with that, Ed. I've always kind of liked Tubby, and think he was a good hire, but I've felt underwhelmed overall, especially the lack of discipline with all of the off-the-court problems.

Also, freshmen need to be played more during the soft belly of the non-conference schedule. You get them experience and put them in situations to learn and help you later on when you need it. Coach K has been a master of this over the years. Tubby? Not impressed.

I don't know. Myron Metcalf sure seems adamant that Tubby will likely leave after the season.

I hope he's back, because I still think he's an elite coach and has had mostly competitive teams despite most everything going as poorly as it possibly could. Still, two years ago the thought of him leaving would have been heartbreaking for me, but now it would only be a minor disappointment. I don't think he'll leave, but it also would not surprise me. The program is definitely in a better position than it was going forward.

If the Georgia Tech job does in fact open, I just can't see Tubby not taking it. It's a PERFECT fit for him, and he gets to compete with Roy and Coach K. He and Roy are extremely close if I remember correctly.

Yep, Tim. He was extremely successful at Georgia and has a lot of connections there. And Atlanta (and the state) has a ton of HS basketball talent. I just can't see him turning down a Georgia Tech job at all if it's open. And by all reports down here, it will be. Atlanta's only a 3 1/2 hour drive from Nashville so we get a ton of Atlanta news/rumors here.
