Marcus tweeted that Rodney says he will be back next year and hopes to be the "guy." Ralph and Trevor will probably declare for the draft but not hire an agent.

Interesting. Hope they don't go. I don't see either one of those guys getting drafted. Ralph plays way too soft. And I don't think Mbakwe's big enough. Kind of a tweener. Plus obviously has some issues that will make some teams shy away.

I was hopeful, but I remain fairly unimpressed with Tubby so far. IF he's even back next year (I still think GT calls), I think it's a put up or shut up year for him.

One potential bright spot: IF Tubby was ever tempted to start feeling complacent or lazy as a college basketball coach, I think this season would have been an effective wakeup call. I think we're going to see a re-energized Tubby next year.

Hopefully so. If he's back. I like Tubby and want him to succeed. I just expect more than what he's done so far.

I made the mistake of relying on Sid to make an accurate assessment of scholarships. It looks like the Gophers have 1.

I agree with Dustin. There is no way Mbrickwe and Sampson will get drafted. My guess is they will do like Dan Coleman and Spencer Tollackson did after their junoir years. Declare, go to some workouts and withdraw from the draft.

Check your math, Jimbo.

If that means the number of scholarships, I think Jim is right. I've read in both Twin Cities fish wrap factories this week that Tubby has 2 unfilled scholarships for next season.

Hoffarber + Nolen + Joseph - Coleman - Hollins = 1 scholarship. They might be recuriting as if they're going to have 2 openings (Mbakwe, Williams, etc.) but that's all just planning for the possible.

Well that is assuming they used all of them last year. He has offered 2 players contracts just 2 weeks ago, one a Juco PG. The you're missing is Cobb who transfered late

Bottomline: Tubby Smith's salary is commensurate with the top coaches in the country. And so far, his teams are not performing at that level. I think he's got one more year max, to right the ship. And I think that's fair.

Never do that, Sweens. Common sense 101, as you know.

Wisconsin loses to Penn State 33-36.

Bo Ryan has set back college basketball 80 years. At least.

No doubt.

Jay Bilas talking about the bubble teams/selection criteria stuff today:

"You want Penn State in the tournament? They won yesterday and moved up. But they were AWFUL. AWFUL!"

The first domino falls:

Unbelievable how bad that contract is that they gave Hewitt.

I mean, seriously:

http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/25806/jackets-finally-swallow-hewitts-buyout

That may be the worst contract ever made. Unbelievable.

Good counter-argument for sure.

But at least we never guaranteed the guy SIX YEARS! FOREVER!

We sunk more money into Punto than they do in to Hewitt's buyout, at least.

The buyout, yes. But they've already been paying Hewitt for a couple of years when they shouldn't have, IMO.

The Gophers found a veteran point guard.
Julian Welch, who averaged 19 points and five assists per game for Yuba Community College in Yuba City, Calif., this season, said he committed to the Gophers Saturday. He visited the school earlier this month.
Welch averaged 7.8 points per game for UC-Davis last season before transferring to the junior college. The 6-3 guard said he's capable of playing both positions but he spent the bulk of this season at point guard.
The Gophers continue to pursue a fourth player for their 2011 recruiting class, even though they currently have three scholarships.
Stephen Keese, a prep shooting guard from Fort Gibson, Okla., Henry Miller, a prep standout for Miller Grove in Lithonia, Ga., and Nemanja Djurisic, a 6-8 power forward from South Kent, Conn., are all targets.
But they've landed Welch, who will be a junior next season. That's a key acquisition for a Gophers team that faded down the stretch without a veteran point guard.

This is fine for next year with Maverick, but they will need another pure PG soon

Really goes to show you the value of a PG. How many times did Nolen look completely lost out there (drive, end up under basket, OHSHITWHATDOIDO?), yet we couldn't even compete without him? Good thing Welch is coming in next year...

It says a lot more about the complete lack of other options (which yes, is a shot at Tubby) than it does about Nolen's talent.
