I just don't see it in that instance at all panndder, and I live in that part of the country, with TONS of Kentucky fans. I think far too often people run to the "race" label whenever an African American coach is forced out. It was merited IMO. The standards at Kentucky are high, and should be. He left the program in much worse shape then when he took over; that can't be denied.

I also totally disagree on recruiting. You can't coach talent. Take a good coach with more talented kids and he's going to do better than a good coach with less talented kids. Obviously. Coaching can only get you so far; you still need talent. And recruiting is a HUGE part of college athletics success at a championship level.

Recruiting is not (at least directly) his problem. Nolen/Hoffarber/White/Mbakwe/Sampson with a bench of Joseph/Carter/Walker contends for the conference title this year, without question.

He didn't recruit Nolen or Hoffarber. They were already committed. He has gotten some good big men

They might not. 17-14, 6-12 in the Big10 is borderline.

Last year Illinois and Northwestern were in from the Big10.

Illinois was 19-14, 10-8 in the Big10.
Northwestern was 20-13, 7-11 in the Big10.

hope they dont make the nit, not the way they have faded. A little embarrassing. Do they have any players, new blue chippers coming next year?

Incoming STUDZ:

Joe Coleman: Dan's little brother. SG/SF type. Generally considered to be a solid (top 150) 3* recruit.
Andre Hollins: Tubby recruited him merely to be confusing to Sid with the whole Andre/Austin thing. Turns out he can play basketball, too. PG/SG (combo guard!) type, he's a scorer and should have an immediate impact. Generally (3 of 4 major services, I think) considered to be a 4* recruit.

We have one open scholarship with Joseph out. Sounds like we're looking at a few JUCO PGs and a high school wing. We're looking at a few, since who knows if Mbakwe/Williams/etc. will be back. I'm guessing they all will, but the odds that SOMEBODY leaves is at least 50:50 I'd have to think.

You really think Mbakwe will be gone?  I hope he has good people to advise him, because I doubt he'd get drafted, 40/60 IMO.  And Williams, if he leaves he'll be playing in Greece, with Hoffarber.  There is no possible way Williams gets drafted.

I think he'd PROBABLY be a 2nd round draft pick if he declared and went through with it. Problem is, to the best of my understanding 2nd round draft picks aren't guaranteed (any?) money. I can't see him making a roster, but the d-league guys make like $50k and have their expenses paid for is my understanding. He has a kid, and he's as old as Hoffarber and Nolen, so if he wants to get a paycheck somehow I can't say I'd blame him. I certainly hope he comes back. Williams still very much could get drafted, but it's a similar story as with Mbakwe, IMO.

No chance at all.  I'd be more than happy to lay 20/1 on that happening.

You seem to over value everything Gopher.  Nolen sucks, Williams isn't anywhere even close to NBA draft ready, and maybe Tubby lost his passion.

I'm serious about the 20-1 on Williams getting drafted though.

I actually think Williams maybe could, on pure athleticism. But 1) that team would be making a huge mistake; there's no way he'd be a good pro. and 2) he'd be making a mistake, because it would be likely late. But I could see it. Many mock drafts had him in the late 1st earlier this year even.

Mbakwe, I agree, definitely would not be drafted. I don't really see anyone on this team right now as a future NBA player, at least not for more than a year or so max.

NBA GM's routinely make draft blunders, but Williams is not even a consideration for anybody, even Kahn.  I'm serious about the 20/1.  Easy money if you believe in him.

Oh, I don't believe in him. I think Williams sucks, at least right now. He's got potential with the athleticism, but that's all it is to this point.

Just saying I wouldn't be shocked if someone drafted him. There are a lot of bad NBA GM's out there, that routinely make mistakes on "athletes" in the draft.

I'd love to see him work and get better.  Right now he is one of the most clueless, athletic basketball players in the country.  He's lazy, not a defender, and absolutely can't shoot.  And what's worse, he doesn't know it.

But Gopher Nation refuses to see things as they are.  If only we had Nolen, we'd be Final Four.

If Rodney developed a one-dribble move and a midrange jumper, he'd be unstoppable. No one could stop it, given his elevation. But for him, it's either a three-pointer or put his head down and go to the rim. In fact, that's a pretty common sight in the NCAA these days. The midrange game is dead (it doesn't get on Sports Center), and it's a shame. Let's hope Tubby has Rodney taking thousands of 15-17 footers this summer.

Yep, Pete. The jumper is just atrocious.

And agree on the mid-range game. Dead in the NBA too. Some coach just commented on that; can't remember who, basically said the only two "mid-range" players left in the NBA were Kobe and Paul Pierce.

Joseph leaving gives him the 2nd scholarship. Supposedly the scholl has been informed they will be in the NIT already. Only way they win one is if Nolen is back

Actually though, Skillz, I think Rodney's jumper has hugely improved over the course of the year. It hasn't necessarily translated into great results yet, but his form has looked smoother and more rhythmic to me, and his misses recently have tended to be "close" misses. And I've heard whispers that in the gym, he's a totally different guy. I think we're going to see a much improved shooter next year.

The bigger problem is whether he's ever going to have the offensive awareness. He doesn't seem to have a great sense of when to be aggressive and when to back off. He gets in stretches where he just kind of drifts on the perimeter and disappears. The basketball awareness is a bigger concern to me than his jump shot and his handles, both of which can improve significantly at this stage in his career.

If that means the number of scholarships, I think Jim is right. I've read in both Twin Cities fish wrap factories this week that Tubby has 2 unfilled scholarships for next season.

That's interesting, Pete.

In fairness, saw most every Gopher game most of the year until the last couple of weeks. He had a lot of REALLY poor misses earlier in the year with the jumper.

Hoffarber + Nolen + Joseph - Coleman - Hollins = 1 scholarship. They might be recuriting as if they're going to have 2 openings (Mbakwe, Williams, etc.) but that's all just planning for the possible.

Yeah -- it's really been in the last couple of weeks. Early in the year, he'd miss by a foot from 3pt. Recently, he's actually improved, both on his makes and his misses (in and out, "close" misses). Since and including the Illinois game (2/10), he's been 5-14 from 3pt -- not great, but improved.

What was the effect of Royce White leaving, scholarship-wise?

Marcus tweeted that Rodney says he will be back next year and hopes to be the "guy." Ralph and Trevor will probably declare for the draft but not hire an agent.

gotcha. well, that's encouraging at least. agreed on the rest of his offensive game too. i really think tubby probably should just let him sink or swim a bit this year and try to "figure it out". i know that's a bit unfair to the rest of the team, but they needed something different.
