I listened to Norwood Teague on Barerrio's show. I liked what I heard so far. And it seems like a lot of people are of the same opinion as panndder. I have a good feeling in Kaler we finally have a president that actually gets that successful athletic programs are an asset to the University. Maturi was hoping to be the AD for a few more years before riding into the sunset. Kaler said sorry Joel, I'm sure you did your best, but we need better.

I think Maturi was ready to be done, to be honest. Plus he gets another year at his comfortable salary assisting with the transition and as an advisor. He's a good guy, an argument could be made that he was in over his head...but a good guy who wanted what was best for the University. Getting TCF built and not having any real black marks on your tenure is one heck of a legacy. I think I saw today that he's 67, which would make him 68 when he's totally done. No spring chicken and he's already been basically at the top (I know, we're not Ohio State or something, but you know) of his profession already.

I'm a big fan of Kaler, too. Time will tell, but so far he's said and done all of the right things. I can't help but love most University Presidents, though. They're mostly brilliant and educated folks who forgo easier, better-paying jobs in order to lobby for higher education and young folks who seek to attend their institutions. Pulls at my heart strings, I guess you could say.

More than a year after word first surfaced the "U" was close to an extension with men's basketball coach Tubby Smith, it's finally a done deal.

The "U" announced on Monday afternoon it has agreed with Smith on a three-year extension through the 2016-17 season.

"I am pleased to announce that Coach Smith and Gopher Athletics have agreed on a contract extension," athletic director Norwood Teague said in a statement issued by the university.

"Tubby took over our program at a difficult time and quickly got it headed back in the right direction, both athletically and academically. Since then, Gopher basketball has continued to make strides under his leadership with four postseason appearances, including last year's exciting run to the NIT tile (sic) game. I look forward to working with Coach Smith into the future to help lift Gopher basketball to even greater heights."

Terms weren't immediately disclosed. A spokesperson with the University's media relations department said the contract details will likely not be available until Tuesday morning. Smith, 61, had been scheduled to make close to $1.8 million in each of the two remaining years on his previous deal.

Smith is 103-68 in five seasons at the "U" and 490-213 in 21 seasons as a head coach. However, the Gophers have missed the NCAA tournament the past two seasons.

"We are excited about the extension and know that the University of Minnesota is the right place for us," Smith said in the statement.

"I believe that we can get the job done here. The commitment from the university is there to continue to grow the program and I am looking forward to being a part of that. I appreciate the faith that Norwood Teague and President Kaler have in our staff and what we are trying to accomplish here. I am focused on reaching our full potential as a program. That is why we came here five years ago and it is still our goal."

Throughout last season, Smith repeatedly insisted an extension was close to being finalized. Negotiations between Smith, his agent Ricky Lefft and the University were delayed when former athletic director Joel Maturi announced his retirement in February. Maturi refrained from closing the deal in order to allow his successor, Teague, the chance to make the final decision.

When Teague was introduced by the University in April, Smith remarked that he was confident a deal was "pretty much done" and only needed Teague's approval. Teague told reporters on June 18th, after he officially began his tenure as AD, that he had no concerns about the numerous hold-ups in the negotiation process and assured an agreement would soon be reached.

I think so. I feel like expectations were/are over the top (he has taken the team to 2 of its ~8 NCAA tournament births in just a few years) and I think the damage of a guy like Tubby not being able to succeed here would last quite a while. Hopefully we can name Shaka Smart coach in waiting in a few years as the end of this contract nears and we celebrate a few Final Fours.

Good point on the fallout that would happen if they admitted defeat and gave up on his program at this point.
He's got a lot more to prove, imo, and at this point I'm ok with him getting the chance.
His name recognition does help the program nationally.
Hell, I used to be a B10 BB freak .. and right now, I'm not sure I could name half the coaches.

The Gophers have been searching for a big man to help fill the gap after Trevor Mbakwe leaves next year, and now they have one.
Junior college big man Daniel Edozie called coach Tubby Smith and made a verbal commitment to Minnesota on Wednesday morning. The forward officially visited Minnesota last weekend.

“I just felt like Minnesota was right,” the 6-8, 239-pound California native said. “They’ve just been there from the start, through everything.”

Minnesota first contacted Edozie in July, and went down to Tyler Junior College (Texas) to watch him twice before Edozie came to Minnesota. When asked what impressed him, Edozie responded “everything, pretty much.”

“I loved the coaching staff and the academic staff, how the players told me the coaches are involved in their college life and … Their attitudes and personalities, and their long-term success and how well-known Tubby Smith is across the country and throughout basketball history. … Outside of the campus, it just makes me feel like I’m at home because of the metropolitan, city area. I’ve always lived in the city, lived the city life and everything.”

Edozie’s coach Mike Marquis said the forward had gotten some calls from “schools in from Oregon, Oklahoma, different leagues, different levels,” but none, it seems, at the level of Minnesota. Edozie was recruited by some mid majors out of high school, and Iowa State, but does not have an account listed on Rivals, Scout or ESPN.

“We felt like Minnesota was kind of the first one in the door and Ron Jirsa and Tubby, they just did a good of honesty and professionalism,” Marquis said. “It just worked out that it was an easy choice for him.”

Edozie, who plans to major in Health Sciences, is the second recruit for the Gophers, who had Chicago wing Alvin Ellis commit on Sept. 23. Minnesota has extended offers to other big men, including Toledo-native Nigel Hayes and one of Ellis’ former teammates, Alex Foster, but neither have committed.

Hmm -- it seems like Tubby's fall recruits are starting to descend to the level of his spring recruits.

I think it's more likely he goes 0 for 3. Jones is probably going to Duke and definitely to an ACC school.

I think Jones and Travis have talked about going somewhere as a team. They both have been to the U many times as unofficial visits and welcomed any time

Have we discussed Mbakwes DWI yet?
Ouch.
Another black eye on top of a cut, covering a boo-boo.
Sheeesh kid. Come on.
Even Tubby got harsh about him yesterday in an interview.

revor Mbakwe avoided jail time on Friday when a judge in Miami gave the Minnesota Gophers basketball player an additonal two years of probation, according to the Star Tribune.

Judge Jose Fernandez also ordered Mbakwe to do 20 hours of community service per month during that two-year period as punishment for a parole violation that took place last July when Mbakwe was arrested for drunken driving in Minnetonka.

Fernandez could have ordered Mbakwe to serve jail time.

"I've been thinking about this since July 1," Mbakwe told the Star Tribune. "It's been stressing me and my family out and I'm glad it's over. ... I'm just going to stay on the right track now; no more slip-ups. The judge gave me another chance and I'm grateful for that. ... I'm just going to show everybody they were right in supporting me."

Mbakwe's original probation in Florida stemmed from a felony battery charge against him in 2009 and had been the result of a pretrial intervention program. His attorney, Gregory Samms, told Fernandez that his client is currently in Alcoholics Anonymous and also has an issue with depression.

Mbakwe reportedly now must attend three Alcoholics Anonymous meetings per week and stay away from the victim in the Florida case.

The NCAA granted Mbakwe a sixth year of eligibility for 2012-13 after he missed much of last season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The Gophers did not dismiss Mbakwe from the team despite his latest run-in with the law.

What did MN sports fans ever do wrong to deserve this stuff?
Finally should have a pretty decent squad ... and now there are 5 B10 teams in the Top 25.
Including 3 in the top 7, and Indiana at #1 even.
We never make our own breaks, and we certainly never stumble upon any.

Excellent question and excellent points Scott. I have wondered the same when we have stretches like the past couple of years when everything seemed to go wrong for all of our teams, and you think about how long it's been since we could claim a championship in any. I want to track down that person with the voodoo doll and wring their neck.

4-12 on 3's in blowout exhibition win over Mankato St.

They need consistent threats from behind the arc.
