That's fine if it's a guy every couple of years.  Not every year.....You lose continuity and "team" if that happens.  Off the top of my head I can think of:

That's the aspect of hockey that seems to be a bigger part of the equation than in other sports.  It seems like one person cannot have the same effect on a game as one could in basketball, so that makes the TEAM so much more important.  I follow the Gophers fairly regularly (and am they're biggest fan when they play UND).  They aren't able to keep their best players in school, not that I blame the players.  Heck, even BSU has lost their last two goalies early to pro contracts.

Yeap,  and that's why SMF brings up the excellent point that Lucia needs more Koalska's and Pultoney's instead of Eric Johnson's/Kessel's ect..

Wow, Jeff .... perfect 'comparison ..... we are the Duke of College Hockey.
Very, very similar issues.
Still good enough to win every night, but can also lose every night.
Pre-season picks to win a lot, go on great runs, usually run out of gas or are overrated when reality sets in.
And i realize every program loses quality kids early (its the nature of the game), but the U would have had some SICK teams if they had stuck together.
Half their roster a couple years ago are now very good NHL players every night.
And thanks for bringing it up again .... the U will never win again until we have at least 5 or 6 of those types (Potulney/Koalskas)
Budish is as close as we've gotten. I wish we could recruit for Lucia a couple years, just to see what would happen.
This team will mesh pretty well, it HAS to, it isn't nearly as talented as we have been, that will MAKE them come together, or they will be embarassed.
Pride will kick in at some point.

The love affair with USDTP
(I always get those initials screwed up)  kids hasn't worked...... and I don't think its hard to figure out why.
That type of player isn't thinking college hockey, he is thinking beyond.

More problems for the Gophs:

Lofquist Leaves Minnesota Men’s Hockey Team
Minnesota sophomore defenseman Sam Lofquist has decided to leave the university’s men’s hockey team and withdraw from school.   Lofquist, a Somerset, Wis. native, has played in three of the Gophers’ eight games this season and did not register any points. He appeared in 35 of the team’s 37 games as a freshman, totaling one goal and three assists.

The Gophers have only 22 active players on their roster now, with forward Jay Barriball (knee surgery) out for the season and defenseman Nick Leddy (broken jaw) out until mid-December.

The good news is Leddy will be back and come January the team will get another forward, Jacob Cepis.

He is another sniper like Barriball. Cepis transferred in midseason last season from Bowling Green.
Gophers coach Don Lucia said Lofquist told him Monday he was leaving the team. "I'm not sure what he is doing," Lucia said. "Obviously, he wanted to play more."
Lofquist had played in three of the Gophers' eight games. He missed two with a bruised foot but was a healthy scratch for the other three games.
The Gophers are now down to six healthy defensemen. "We got the guys who want to be here," Lucia said.

Sad to see that happen.
But it does.
Lots of pressure there, and results are all that matters, unfortunately.
If he could have helped, I'm betting Hill and The Don would have had him dressed.

Now that was some Gopher hockey for a change (late).
Simply out-talented them. This is a strange group, but one that could gel pretty nicely.
So many have incredible talent, but they are figuring out that alone gets you bupkus in the WCHA.
Schroeders FIRST goal of the year? Thats pathetic. Kids a prolific scorer, not having one until now tells you how messed up they have been.
Bet they'll get BSU's best effort today, they better be ready.
This will soon turn into a nice rivalry. BSU is tough and gritty and hard to play against. And I bet they'll be much better today.
I had gotten off the Kangas bandwagon, but he certainly looks like he has taken over leadership. His work on the long 5-on-3 turned the game around.
I thought Wooger (who is certifiably senile, btw) was crazy when he said the game was over at that point, but he turned out to be very right.
Haven't touched on it yet this year, but am I the only one seeing Woog's decline? I mean, he's always been kinda wacky, but at this point, he's off-the-deep-end crazy most nights. Does that whole thing where it gets real quiet after he makes a statement, and everyone who heard it is going "wth did he just say?"
Mazzacco is one of the best "track coverers" in the history of broadcasting.

Funny you mention that Scott - because I also had the same thought about Woog last night. He has been kind of "doddering" for a while now and has said some things that make you go "huh?"

But last night it seemed to stand out so much more than usual. I have to think the time is limited that he can continue to function in that capacity - but there probably isn't anyone there that is willing to tell him.

You're 100% right Lynn .... no one will tell him. He's in that "Sid" vein .... an icon that people simply accept and say "awww, it's just Sid being Sid".
Woogers deep in Mn hockey lore, like him or not (many do not).
One of the ties to "St Paul hockey".
My nephew worked for him for several summers at his camps, and we've always been amazed at how loyal he is to that kid, ALWAYS remembers him, always is willing to come thru with a ticket or two, just a good man. He loves the U, and as you say, they love him back so much that he'll be there in that capacity as long as he wants to be.
Had to be tough for him to come back and work the games when we won titles under The Don (which he couldn't get done).
But he handled it with class. I like him, I have just noticed he is really slipping fast.

The Gophers looked like the Gophers last night.  Great passing, Great defense, hustle, speed, good effort.  The recent past the Gophers come out and lay an egg the next night, lets break that trend with a barnstorming effort.  I want to see Minnesota flying around the barn tonight and continue this good play.  Both wisconsin and BSU played good games but the Gophers when they play theri game are as good as anybody in the country.

GO GOPHERS SWEEP THE BEAVERS!!!!!!!!

I never seen a team misfire on this many shots in a game.  Inconsistent again.  BSU has had a couple of breaks but the Gophers are playing bad again!

Well Dahl, we got a split.  I'm very happy with that being a Beaver fan.  I like how Mazocco was talking about how last night's game was the upset, not tonight.  I don't care what the rankings say, if BSU beats the U, it's an upset not the other way around.  The U's whole team has been drafted in the NHL, BSU has one player drafted into the league.

Having watched both games, the Gophers have way more skill and speed than the Beavers do.  Being on the big sheet made that even more obvious.  The only way we can beat the Gophers is if our goalie stands on his head, or if the Gophers' goalie is a sieve.  Thankfully, the Gophers' goalie helped us out tonight.

Congrats guys.
Knew the Beaves would take it to us, and it doesn't break my heart.
Excellent example of the difference between the players. Gophers thought BSU would roll over for them.
Nope.
That was an ass-kicking last night, even tho the pipes were ringing behind the Beaver tender.
Last night was that old adage .... hard work can beat talent when talent doesn;t work hard.
Or something like that.
And not taking anything away from BSU, they are the better team in many ways, and will go further.
They don't watch each other row, they get in the boat and oar, baby.

We finally have a horse that will stand in front of the net and take punishment for screens, tips, and goals.
Budish is one of those guys we've needed for awhile.

YES! Not sure why, but I found myself pulling for Duluth. I know the Gophers aren't going anywhere this year, so I'll go for the smaller Minnesota schools over the Gophers. I'll pull for the Gophers against all out-of-state schools.

Seriously? I can't picture any circumstance where I could so easily flip my allegiance on a night by night basis like that.
