We'll see how they finish out Jim. Right now they are winning on outstanding talent and a great goalie. I will give Lucia credit for bringing back Guntzel and recruiting these kids. If he can sustain it I will gladly eat crow. If they win the NCAA I will gladly eat crow til I poop black feathers.

IMHO, Lucia is a great recruiter but not a "great" coach.   He's a very good coach and having Guentzel back is huge.   Don is very cool and collected and when he needs to get nasty, it doesn't come off well.  Guentz, well, that's another story.  He seems like he would rip your head off if needed.  You can see his intensity during intermission interviews.

I also give Scott mad props.  He said Grant P would be a great addition.  I expected him to be Darby light.  He seems to be a guy waiting in the wings that will go on to big things.

In the past 5 years this team has been built wrong.  We've been weak defensively and relying on super stars to outscore teams.  We still have a couple superstars that can outscore teams, but we are solid on the backend and specatular in the net.

I'm really excited about this team and where they can go.  What is our backup situation in the nets?

Both of our favorite teams are winning with the play of their goalies, right now. I bet no one saw that Patterson would be this good.

Spot on Jeff.
Just a great feel behind the bench .. perfect mix.
No kid is gonna tell Grant Potulney how to play like a Champion.
The added perfect pieces.
They didn't focus solely on visible talent, they focuse don some intangibles you cannot have a good team ... without.
Raus an elite talent... and a feisty little s.o.b.
Ness only had half that package.
Budish (my sign that our recruiting had turned "smart") is showing why. BIG badass. In the Potulney Koalska mode.
It helps when your captain is a tough mothermucker too. Matson earned the C, for putting up with some primadonnas that are now gone.
This is no longer a team filled only with talent (yes, they always had it, even in the down years)
It is now a team filled with talent ... and hunger.
I know this will sound homerish, but when you pull on that M ... it is a target for every asshole in the 5-state area.
Some guys shrink because of it, some say "bring it on". These guys get it.

Back-up tender is scary, Jeff imo
Shibrowski is a Benilde-St maggies grad, played early at CC
Kremer is the "practice guy"
We do have a couple blue-chippers in our sights tho.
Right now, we pray Patty stays healthy.

Hope they don't make too big a deal of the #1 ranking.
Means squat right now, just makes the target bigger.
We are not the best team in the country right now, but we're getting there.

His problem is he gets these great players and when the NHL teams tell them they are ready, he is left a little empty. Rau won't be there all 4 years

Couple good reports last night on Mr Rau.
Really benefitting from being on a well-rounded line.
Two huge, strong kids with him, one with phenomenal skill and the other with heart and smarts.
Thats one hell of a line (Budish-Bjugstad-Rau)
Could possibly have 2 or 3 years together? Look out record books. Bjugstad will be the toughest to keep around, has an NHL body already.
Wiscy will be rockin this weekend, reminds me of when we went in there with Kessel a couple years back.

What's your assessment? Can we sweep the Badgers? We've got to come out of Wisconsin with SOME win this weekend.

We take 3 out of 4.  We get a win tomorrow and they steal a point late on Sat.

Probably not asking me, Lynn ,.. but imo ...
This is a perfect example of the unpredictability of college sports. mostly hockey ...
neutral site, no rankings, not rivalry ..... this is a Gophers sweep
But you add
natural rivalry
player familiarity
crazy atmosphere in someone else's rink
the emotion of taking on the nation's #1 team (that no one else in the WCHA wants us to have)
And there's the problem.
Sweeping them would not be a surprise, but it would be impressive when factoring all these things in.
Less than a split would be unacceptable imo. We are the better team, I think.
Great weekend to keep improving and keep growing as a team.
Wins in places like that MAKE teams.
Once again, a lot will rest on Pattersons shoulders. He will see a lot of shots. Let in an early weak one? Whole weekend can change.
Which is great, because he just doesn't seem to let that happen. Kid is solid and on top of his game. if he plays well, we will win 'em both.
There, ya squeezed it out of me.

Ok, glad there is 100% agreement here .... THAT was freaking disappointing
NOT that we lost, HOW we lost.
Thats not the strongest team we've played. Don't get me wrong ... they killed us, but only because we allowed it.
I really had myself convinced this group would not fall back into Gopher Hockey from the past couple years ... but that was exactly what that was last night.
Pathetic effort. Too cool to care early, then when it got serious, decided the effort wasn't worth it.
EVERY aspect deserves blame. Horrible attitude to start, lethargic play while even, awful goaltending, and no finish.
Then once we got down, went back (for awhile) to every guy caring only about himself being the hero.
Extremely disappointing. Not that we lost. HOW we lost. Now we'll REALLY see if things are different in that locker room, or if this start has been a mirage.
And ... why does FSN think its cute to put "their homer" on with "our homers"? Isn't this the Gopher station? Talk about irritating.
Last thing I want to hear about is what a wonderful young man that Badger is, who just scored against our lackadaisical line change, around our ass-dragging defensemen, and then thru our don't -give-a-crap goalie.

Didn't watch the game, but is there any surprise that there was a let down? Just swept a huge series, took over a #1 ranking, early in the year, with a young team.

Hopefully they can pull out a split and keep growing.

Surprise? no.
Disappointment? yes
You always hope you have a group together that is good enough to avoid those expected let-downs.
Or at least I do.
Should be very interesting tonight.

That first period was probably one of the most excruciating things I ever watched. Beyond a shadow of a doubt that #1 ranking went right to their heads. Better show a little pride tonight boys.

Wow, glad you guys have chipped in with this stuff this morning ... I was actually concerned for my mental heath last night ...
Thats exactly the word that described my feelings ... excruciating.
It took "skating in sand" to a new level.

If I were Lucia, I wouldn't even show them film of that game for fear that they might actually die of embarrassment.

That's one of the things that absolutely bugs me about our local sports coverage. They cover Packer/Badger stuff almost as much as OUR sports. I know they're all about revenue and they know that the audience is filled with a) people who have moved here from Wisconsin and b) people who live across the border that are in the broadcast range of our local stations.

But dangit - do you think any other market does this? This is where Minnesota Nice needs to stop. I absolutely don't want Wisconsin teams covered as if we are interested in them.
