Matt, you gotta come up and see the Sanford Center sometime. Pretty nice arena! Last night stunk, BSU was playing well but we left in that softie with 4 min left, and then the flood gates opened.

It looks like our favorite hockey teams ate too much turkey, or something.

For some reason, the friday night debacles lately aren't bugging me much.
I think it's easy to see how much better we are ... dominating, really, just not getting chances home, or getting very good tending.
Patty lets in weak ones on Friday night and Sunday .... but Saturdays, he's Gold.
Rau with some more unbelievable plays tonight, he has an un-Godly motor. One of the best motors I've ever seen.
And Bjugstad is simply a man-child out there.

Big 10 hockey preview game tonight...at Michigan State. It's on FSN, but it's not doing much for me. Would much rather watch us battle it out with UND, Duluth or even Bemidji or Alaska Anchorage.

A loss and a tie this weekend.
Not happy, but not freaking out.
We still SEEM to be the much better squad.
Patty is no longer stealing us games, and we go thru long stretches of ineffectiveness.
But ..... we are incredibly talented. Will be fun to see how we progress thru the dog-days here.

Hockey is a long season and it's tough to play on the road in the middle of the season, I believe. The Gophers are still stellar at home.

We were watching the Wild but flipped to the Gopher game between periods. It's always a feisty game with the thuggish Mankato teams, but the good guys prevailed once again.

What a good night for hockey!

Wasn't pretty but I'll take it.

We need Patterson from earlier in the year.  This new guy is pretty average at times and we won't win jack without his A game.

Nice to see Wild prospect Eric Haula net the game winner with his 9th goal. He is now at 9G 13A 22pt in 17 games. Not bad for a 7th round pick. Fletch strikes again.

How the hell is that a penalty on Rau? That was a text book hit.

WCHA reffing leaves a lot to be desired .... wow, that was ugly.
Nice to sweep. Mankato is building a club of solid talent there, really young.
Strange schedule for the next month, will be hard to stay sharp. 20 days off after next weekend? Weird.

The Rau penalty just blew me away. He came across and delivered a hit; with his shoulder, elbows and stick down; on the man in possession of the puck. It could not have been a cleaner or more text book check, but because he hit him hard enough that the guy fell down, it was apparently a penalty. The fact that the call was roughing shows that the ref knew he had no technical basis to call a penalty, but he just felt he should call something. Possibly the worst call I have ever seen in my life.

I assume those refs get reviewed just like other sports refs. Hopefully that crew will lose a paycheck or something.

Along those lines, Tim ... its hockey's biggest downfall in many ways ... hockey reffing follows crowd reactions more than any sport
You are correct on Rau's "hit" ... it was based on reaction ... and what pisses me off the most (we see it at every level) ... it often is based on game situation.
case in point .. the Wild last night ... no Wild player had to get within 5 feet of a Duck, and you KNEW there would be a Duck PP int he final minutes.
Mn could have stood along the boards and let Harding fend for himself, and we STILL would have gotten a penalty on us for something.
Its become so routine ... we just go to the box. "yep, they needed a call to get back in the game, yep, we know"
The "even it up" call that hockey gets a bad name for ... isn't a hoax. Its truth. And it needs to stop.
And they now aren't just even-ing up certain situations, they are reffing to make entire games closer, from what I see.
I'm not condemning them all ... sorry if it sounds that way ... just saying we have to change the culture of reffing and how its done at some point. Its a damn tough job.
And i'm saying ... I think they'd do better if they wore earmuffs and blinders. They are allowing too many outside forces inside their thinking, imo.
The NHL (and major-college) is taking pages from the NBA and MLB ... calls depend on WHO the players and teams are ... that's where it all goes to hell.

(I still say the "holding" call in football has ruined sport, and made it verrrrrrry suspicious) You can call it at any time ... or not call it (to swing games) .. hmmmm.

Even going back to last year’s World Junior Championship, the Florida Panthers and GM Dale Tallon envisioned Nick Bjugstad as the big, powerful center they didn’t have. And while the Cats are flying high in the NHL this year, Bjugstad continues to develop his game at a nice rate as a member of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. He’ll also be an integral part of Team USA again this year when the tournament hits Edmonton and Calgary.

“The exciting part for us is we’ve seen the maturation of this player,” said U.S. GM Jim Johansson. “He’s a little bit stronger and everything he did last year he’s doing at a slightly higher pace.”

Bjugstad was a star with the Blaine Bengals during his Minnesota high school days and a heavily anticipated recruit for the Gophers. A bout with mononucleosis slowed his progress as a freshman, but he was still able to put up four points in six games at the world juniors and 20 points in 29 games for Minnesota. This season, he’s been a monster, tallying 15 goals and 26 points through his first 18 games to lead the team in scoring. Right now, he’s hoping to earn his way back onto that junior squad (though honestly, he’s a lock).

“I want to bring the same thing I did last year,” Bjugstad said. “Two-way play, scoring some goals and playing back on defense.”

After a couple disappointing campaigns, the Golden Gophers are back on top of the WCHA and the play of Bjugstad has been a big part of it, though there has been a surprising freshman in the ranks who has augmented the sophomore’s impact and that’s fellow Florida draft pick Kyle Rau. The small but skilled 2011 third-rounder is third in Minnesota scoring and had many doubters coming in. But his teammate was not one of them.

“I played against Kyle for years growing up and then was lucky enough to play with him at the Ivan Hlinka tournament,” Bjugstad said. “I knew coming in what he could do. He knows where to be on the ice and that trumps anything.”

Rau also made Team USA’s preliminary roster for the world juniors, but it’s tough to say at this point if he’ll make it or not. Several dynamic smaller players are available (T.J. Tynan, John Gaudreau and Austin Czarnik are three others, while Rocco Grimaldi is out due to a knee injury), though there’s no rule that says Johansson and crew have to take just one – or any. Bjugstad, on the other hand, will be front and center on the American attack and he relishes the opportunity to play Canada at least once and maybe twice on its home soil. With the tournament in Buffalo last year, the stands were packed with Canucks and even the semifinal against Team USA featured just as many Canadian fans as their American counterparts.

“It’s fun playing in that environment,” he said. “The Canadian fans are something else.”

Bjugstad chalked last summer’s U.S. orientation camp as a big reason for his naming to the 2011 installment of the team, giving him the confidence to know he could keep up with the older participants. This summer’s edition featured great competition from Sweden and Finland and the 6-foot-4 center was happy to get in those reps once again.

Even though the roster’s not quite set, Team USA will be stacked again this year and with coach Dean Blais back behind the bench after a one-year absence, the gold-medal pedigree is there. Bjugstad likes his team’s odds going into Edmonton and Calgary.

“I think this team has just as much of a chance as the team that won gold two years ago.”

We are definitely slipping on our recogntiion of .... "this is a big game for them".
You have to have that mentality as a Gopher hockey player.
And we don't show it lately on Friday night.
If we don't rise up tonight and take control back, then I'll be worried.
The teams that play college hockey these days are loaded with dangerous players. You can lose to any team, any night, when you don't bring enough intensity and emotion.

Yeap, it looks like they are buying thier hype.  I also mentioned earlier that other guys need to step up in the offensive zone.  You can't expect an 18 year old phenom to carry you throughout the entire season.

What was a miss last night was the play of our D in our zone.  They were a freaking wreck.

Speaking of that - have they started making a list of nominations for the new nickname to replace "Fighting Sioux?" I assume students will have a chance to submit ideas???

My future-daughter-in-law graduates from there next week ... and they told her that there will not be a new nickname until something like 2014? How the hell is that possible?
I'm pretty sure they just think delaying it will make it go away.
They seem to have no plans for moving on.
