I realize the WCHA had its share of doormats. But a 12-team league is just so much more fun than a 6-team league. I can see the Big Ten has 3 good teams...or is perceived to have only 3 good teams. #2 Wisconsin #3 Minnesota #5 Michigan That's some top-end power when half your league is in the national Top 5. Ohio State would be #38 and Michigan State #39 (tie). But look at all the old WCHA teams in the Top 20 and receiving votes: #2 Wisconsin #3 Minnesota #6 UND #11 SCSU #12 Denver #18 Mankato #20 UMD #22 Alaska-Anchorage #26 Colorado College #33 UNO #35 Michigan Tech Loaded top to almost bottom. That means more to me than being loaded 1-3, having a below average 4-5, and a mystery 6. The good news is we're still gonna have a strong schedule facing some of those teams and adding Notre Dame. But there's no continuity to the season when you play some of those teams, but not others. And you can't easily compare how the Gophers are doing with the other teams in the WCHA or mostly the new conference. I just don't think the WCHA was broken. I get what the Big Ten is doing, and long-term maybe it's OK. But you know what's gonna happen. These other Big Ten teams are gonna throw more money and recruiting into their hockey programs and we'll end up being "have nots" by the time the league expands to 12 or 16 or wherever this is heading. "We're a smart person school, athletics are secondary." It's scary where this could head.
