The one reason for optimism: Kill has had a pathetic, miserable first season basically everywhere he's gone. I start to get worried in year 2.

Eye-opening ... to lose to the next-worst team in your conference that badly.
What in the world do we do now, with the REAL teams left on the schedule? Ouch.
There were glimpses of real football ability late, but was that because Purdue had emptied their bench?
We literally have O-linemen that run like "dorky kids". Watch them sometime. Extremely un-athletic.
Are you guys getting the same questions I am?
I mean, my kids are constantly saying now ... "no, really, Dad, really .... HOW are we this bad?"
Its gone beyond simply saying we lack players.
I mean, we LOOK like we have players. You see size, you see muscle, you see some speed, and then the play starts ... and we become the Washington Generals.
We play defense like the Vikings played special teams for awhile ....
a) chase ball b) get to where ball is c) turn and run with ball-carrier for awhile d) follow and chase runner like you are trying e) fall down somewhere along the way
It looks scripted.

Pete I'm unimpressed with his play calling or how defense is run. Now maybe he has been unable to put in much of his system because of the type of players he has inherited. I do see a big need for more speed & strength on this team

It is embarrassing.  We hold them to a FG (them being anyone) and guy are running around like they just won the game, fist pumping, high fiving ect....

Guys, with that 3 the combined score for the year is you - 20, oppenants - 398.   I see flashes of Rudd every time they are on the field.

Kill says he and his staff are having to monitor 63 of his players to make sure they are going to class.

http://www.startribune.com/sports/gophers/131676828.html

I guess there was a reason a lot of these alleged 4 star athletes were available to Brewster.

I remember reading before that when Kill inherited the program there were 22 players on academic probabtion. That says a lot in my opinion. Winners compete to win everywhere. On the field, In the classroom and in the community. This bunch clearly doesn't fit that mold.

Agree 100%.

I hated reading that about having to babysit players

I have been concerned that our move to DI at USD would cause academics to suffer.  We have had a long history of an excellent marriage of academics and athletics.  I know that SDSU after its switch has had excellent success in the classroom.  At this time, I am quite pleased with the caliber of students we have who are athletes.

The problem seems to occur when players actually think their sporting careers will continue after their collegiate experience.  For a rare athlete, even going to USD, that is true but the vast majority know that it is not reality.

That is also very true for the U of M football team but I wonder if some actually think they will have football after their U of M days......someone better tell them that it will be arena football at best for many.....they need to get their butts to class.  Maybe if they were a little smarter in the classroom, that might translate onto some smarts on the field.

Kill has a huge job to turn this program around.

What really sucks is that normally when you have horrible academic standards you at least have a really successful program

Bingo
Great stuff Miles and Jeff
At least, if we are horrible accademically, you could wish for strength on the field.
Being awful at both? Even more unacceptable.
Its sad ... but true ... even these pathetic guys we have at the U now ... think they will play beyond this level.
Thats why imo, you have to start over with a different class oif athlete, the type the USDs and SDSUs have ... build some school pride first, some ownership.
Maybe not the 5-star and 4-star guys we always covet, but big strong kids. Make us good at something.
I want to apologize to Mason  ... at least then, we could run the ball down anyone's throats. We need something to hang our hat on first. Then worry about wins and bowls.

It's too bad. I drank gallons of the Kool-Aid. I loved the Jerry Kill approach. The guy was saying all the right things and looked to be going about things the right way. The problem is that he came in here as a guy with a reputation for coaching players up to the next level. So far in 6 games he has not made these players even slightly better than when Brewster coached them.

On the other hand ... USC is better than we made them look. Pretty good team we hung with there.
Not the usual USC-good, but getting better all the time. With some quality games already on the schedule.

An average Glen Mason team creams Indiana going away.

Maybe the whipping USD suffered at the hands of Wisconsin in Madison wasn't too awful after all.  Indiana was crushed and Nebraska got pushed all over the field.

And USD was moving the ball on Wisconsin in the 1st quarter.

The bad in the Big 10 (and Nebraska should be in the upper tier) are really pretty bad and not much better, if better, than good FCS teams.

The 2011 Wisconsin team would cream a Glen Mason Gopher team as well.
