So the Big Ten is willing to explore a 4-team football playoff?

First they have to get better to even field a team for it.

Gophers spring practice started today. Here are some very quick player notes & quotes from Kill's presser earlier this week....

"Our spring game is April 21"

QB
Mitch Leidner & Philip Nelson - "outstanding job in the off season"; also in the classroom and weight room
MarQueis Gray - "he's our starting quarterback right now. No question about that."; but "there's competition"

RB
Mike Henry - will be held out of contact T.il F.urther N.otice (car accident)
David Cobb - "He's up to 220 pounds and benches 330, squats 500, got 36 inch vertical, pro agility of 4"
Cole Banham - "Walk on kid...I'm excited about, 5 10,180 but done some good things"

Marcus Jones - will miss the beginning practices (ACL); is way ahead of schedule
Isaac Fruechte - "great job in the off season"; "a 34 inch vertical jump with a 4 1 pro agility"

Brendan Beal - will be held out of contact TFN (recuperating from knee injury)
Keanon Cooper - will miss the beginning practices (wrist). "We know Keanon can play"
James Manuel - moved to will linebacker; "will get more speed at linebacker."

Brock Vereen - a position move to safety; also will miss the beginning practices (knee)
Steven Montgomery - will miss the beginning practices (torn pec muscle)
Jeremy Baltazar - junior college player; "he's a 200 pound corner. He benches 390. He tested the other day at 390 and squatted 455 and verticals well over 33 inches"
Briean Boddy & Martez Shabazz - "have three years left that have done very good in the off season"
Derrick Wells - moved to safety (I though he was played safety last year??); "he's gone from 175 pounds to a 200 pound kid"

One of the comments left below the article indicate that his heart stopped. If true, it still amazes me, with the physicals those guys go through, that stuff like that goes undetected.

The BTN is showing the Gophers spring game that was played yesterday. I have DVR set to rec it at 6 tonight and now see it was a 3-0 score. Now I'm not excited to watch it

Offensive lineman Brian Bobek, who announced earlier this month that he would transfer from Ohio State, is headed to play for Minnesota.

Bobek on Saturday released a statement to several media outlets, including ESPN.com, confirming his move to the Gophers. Because of Big Ten rules about transferring between conference members, Bobek will lose a season of eligibility in 2012 as he sits out because of NCAA transfer rules. He will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2013. Bobek will pay his own way this fall because Minnesota is at its scholarship maximum (85). He will be on scholarship with the Gophers beginning in January 2013.

Bobek says in his statement that Minnesota was one of the first schools to contact him when he announced his intention to transfer. Head coach Jerry Kill and offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover reached out after receiving permission from Ohio State.

"Coaches Kill and Limegrover are exceptional coaches, and I am confident they and the rest of the staff are on the way to restoring the winning tradition of the Minnesota football program," Bobek's statement reads. "I look forward to making a contribution to Minnesota football and, once eligible, having an opportunity to achieve my personal goals as a football player. The University of Minnesota offers a quality education, and I hope to take advantage of the many opportunities of going to school in a great city like Minneapolis. Also, my family and I are happy for me to have the chance to continue to compete in the Big Ten, one of the best football conferences in the country.

"I once again want to thank the athletic department and football program at The Ohio State University for their consideration and assistance in easing my transition to the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Golden Gopher football program."

Bobek played a bit as a freshman last season for the Buckeyes. A highly touted recruit, he had been projected as the successor to four-year starter Michael Brewster at center, but he slipped to No. 3 on the depth chart this spring.

The 6-foot-2, 275-pound Bobek is a good pickup for Minnesota, which is looking to upgrade depth on the offensive line and restore its reputation in the trenches.

I'm all for getting a transfer from The Ohio State University, but 6'2" / 275 seems a bit on the runty side for an OL.

I'm gonna try to tell this story without getting choked up (again).
This is Coach Kill with my wife's nephew Travis, and his son Mason.
Our family was thrown into turmoil a couple months ago, when a simple check-up revealed Mason's little body is being ravaged by cancer.
After the initial shock, they have settled in to regular rounds of chemo in the Twin Cities. (they are from the Brainerd area)
One day this week ..to kill time, Travis and Mason headed over to TCF Bank Stadium to check it out. They wandered around the facility, looking thru gates and enjoying the day.
They were soon approached by a lady working in the facility. She talked to them and inquired about the situation. She told them to come thru a gate and they were welcome to watch as a camp Coach Kill was running went on, on the field. It made Masons day to get in and enjoy the place.
And then it got better. The lady had obviously gone and talked to Coach Kill. Soon, he had worked his way over and motioned them into the tunnel to talk.
He spent a good long time talkng with them, and sharing his own cancer story. Totally spontaneous, and totally wonderful.
Good coach.
Better man.

I've never heard a bad thing about Kill. Seems like a great ambassador for the University. I've also gotten the impression that he is very happy here. He said that his wife jokes that he better win here, because she's not leaving the Twin Cities.

If Travis is comfortable, he should pen the story and send it to the local paper. We need more stories like this to get out there.

Hate to say it, but I'm going to have to agree with Grampa Sid's column today. He was glowing about Kill and how well the program is being run and what far better shape they are in now compared to a year ago. Now, granted, Sid could dust this column off every year ,change a couple of names and reprint it. He's the eternal optimist of gophers sports. But anyone who's paying attention beyond the surface has to conclude that this time that the overused cliche "moving in the right direction" actually fits.

They have more depth, more continuity, more fundamental strength, more skill than the beginning of last year.

But what will that translate to a far a wins or losses? I'm afraid the absolute best case ceiling this year is just 7-5 and a minor December bowl game. And that's only if an awful lot of things go well.

For me the benchmark for wins is 5. Any more is a good year, any less is a somewhat disappointing. I see it like this:

at UNLV
vs. New Hampshire
vs. Western Michigan

Games that should be close and whoever wins is not a big surprise:

vs. Syracuse
at Iowa
vs. Northwestern (HC)
at Illinois

Games that we are the clear underdog (but still would be nice to pull one major upset):

at Wisconsin
vs. Purdue
vs. Michigan
at Nebraska
vs. Michigan State

Last year, we lost 4 games by 27 or more points. I'd like to see that number drop to just two this year....and Wisconsin cannot be one of them.

That's pretty much my math too. 6 wins would be the expectation that they've taken the next step, and are still on their way. If they can somehow pull an upset and get to 7, that's the ceiling for this year.

Even though they should be able to win their 4 non conference games chances are they'll lose one. A 70% free thrower makes both free throws less than half the time ( 49% or .7 * .7) Even if you hypothetically assign a 4 to 1 chance of success (80%) to each individual game your chances of winning all 4 are only 41% (.8 * .8 * .8 * .8)

So I figure 3-1 non conference. which means they'd need 3-5 conference to get to 6-6. and 4-4 conference to get to 7-5. 4-4 would be really tough, but not impossible.

Six wins may well get us to minor bowl. Some things that concern me:

1) Syracuse had 2 players declare early for the NFL draft last year. We haven't even had a player drafted for a couple of years. I'm thinking their talent level is at least equal to ours.
2) Western Michigan is no gimme. They played in bowl game last year, losing a fairly close game to Purdue...and return a lot of starters.
3 ) Iowa - Will we beat them 3 times in a row?
4) Illinois - see above...
