Wisconsin (I hear) has a zero tolerance policy there ... no one's ever gone to a game there drunk.

The latter. As I'm sure you mean.

My husband is a Badger fan and is extremely critical of the fans of that team. It drives him crazy that they continue to tailgate (read drink) all the way through the first quarter and don't bother to wander in to the game until sometime in the second quarter. And the arrests of drunk students is pretty well known there.

Gotta be careful here. Bagging on Wisconsin is a part-time sport for me, but at least the students show up at the games. There is little sense in trying to compare the game-day experiences at Minnesota v. Wisconsin at this point; Wisconsin wins hands down, sober or drunk.

I'm just quoting my husband who is a Wisconsin fan. He pointed it out to me on tv - the student section would sit virtually empty for the first quarter of all the home games. Last year it seemed to improve a little bit.

But going back ten years and before he also told me that it was really hard to fill Camp Randall because the team went through a long spell of not being very good. In other words - they're fair weather just like every other fan base.

And I agree: if a team is good, the people will come, and if Wisco falls on hard times for an extended period, I have no doubt they'll have the same issues.

But it's been closer to 20 years, not 10, that they've been good and have been filling the place. The Gophers haven't had that in my lifetime, so yeah, I'm jealous, even if we do have six national championships to Wisconsin's zero.

Good info Karl H. It is kind of frustrating that we wasted a redshirt year of McDonald for what, a couple of series at UNLV? I don't think I've seen him on the field the last two games. Do you think either of our high profile OL recruits from this past year will crack the lineup next year?

There is no doubt in my mind that the U suffers in terms of game day experience to a certain extent because it is located in a sweet city. Madison is nice and all, but it's a slightly-larger college town. You go anywhere in the city on game days and it's geared toward the Badgers. That will never be the case here -- or in most any large city that has other things to offer and/or has a populace made largely of people who (a) didn't go the local school or (b) are not otherwise invested in the team.

That said, winning regularly would go a long way towards improving the game day atmosphere, in my mind.

The atmosphere around the stadium and campus was very festive Saturday. It is improving rapidly. The overall numbers do not yet match a lot of other places, but that comes with winning.

This next game has a potential to be an all out party. Team is 3-0, and it's a night game, not 11:00 AM. So instead of being forced to party in the morning, people will have all day to get juiced.

But as for the rest of the city, away from campus, you're right it's not likely that the whole city will ever be geared up for the Gophers. It's just too big. It's not like being at Ann Arbor, or South Bend.

I think it was widely considered that Persig would need at least a year to develop so his redshirt decision was easy. Next year? We’ll see how far he’s come. It would be great if he’s ready to take over at RT for a year (then move to LT). Campion has done alright over their but his build may make him better suited to move inside. I think Campion could beat out both Mottla & Epping next year. As for Hayes, I think they had him pegged at center. Does the Brian Bobek signing affect that? Possibly in the short term, but there is a two year difference. It was also reported that the defensive coaches wanted Hayes at DT. We’ll have to see how things play out. It’s always good to have options.

This week on the Jerry Kill show, they had him on campus handing out free tickets. For 1st game they gave every freshman a free ticket. I though moving it on campus was suppose to help get students to game. Now since I'm not at games, I don't know if student section is filled or not and that they are handing out tickets to areas where alumni normally sit and not buying tickets.

The Western Michigan game was a little less. Lower deck almost full, but upper deck student section maybe 1/4 full.

That's a shame

But remember I'm just talking about the student section, which is the end of the stadium. And both games they pretty well filled the bottom part. I don't think it's too bad for nonconference games.

Here's a pic of the student section I happened to take at the New Hampshire game. I thought it was a pretty good student turnout for a game against New Hampshire. The students are on the end. Mostly dressed in yellow.

Columbus is much bigger than your typical college town no doubt. I've been there on a game day and while there is a fantastic HUGE tailgate party area for every game, I would question the depiction though that the whole city revolves around the football game. It's certainly important, since they have no NFL there. But there's lots of other stuff going on too.

And yeah it sure helps when you contend for Big Ten title nearly every year too.

Absolutely. The buzz is already growing for this team. Now I still have no idea how successful they'll be by the end of the year, because I'm the first to admit they haven't really been tested yet...and still they almost blew it out in Vegas.

So even though they are 3-0 it's hard to predict future success based on that. You have to go deeper and look harder for clues. And I'm concluding this is the most solid team they've had since Mason when they won the Sun Bowl. They just seem to be playing a much better brand of football.

But what the hell do I know? It could all fall apart next week.

I'm an old coot, Steve ... (and not a real Husker lover) .... and I know I've told you this one many times...
But I've gone to many venues, for different types of games ...
And the trip my best buddy took me on to Lincoln a couple years back (and it wasn't even a BIG game) .... convinced me thats about as good as it gets.
Incredible atmosphere. My buddy is a regualr, he made me do all the die-hard stuff, we hung around all morning at the shops around the stadium, it was awesome.
Hell, the drive from Omaha (the closest place we could stay) was maybe as incredible as anything .... 20 miles out, you had to start crawling in the turn lane to get off the interstate and into Lincoln.
He took me down into the lobby where the players walk thru on the way to the field. Took my breath away, and I'm usually not that much of a Sally about stuff like that.
If we could ever get HALF that kind of passion here, I'd be in heaven.

I was the ONLY person there not decked in it
My favorite part tho ... was that EVERYONE knew the game (at least around us)
None of this sickening crap where people are there solely to be seen, or had the tickets given to them.
Every man woman and child knew the punters last four kicks, knew when the back up center had to come in, called out blitz packages before they happened ... it was the Anti-Twins experience.
