To many penalties almost cost team a win. Most were mental and can be corrected.

But we shouldn't be happy that they played the 4th qtr as not to lose instead of continuing to put on with how they got the 28

I missed the game but heard on the radio that Gray went down. What's the scoop?

Nevermind, I saw a quick article. Ankle and knee, on crutches for the second half. I'm sure more information will be released when they know.

Nice start for the Gophers - and what a perfect day to play outdoor football!

Supposedly high ankle sprain. I'm sure they'll say day to day, but I say out a few weeks. The high ones are the bad ones.

Honestly, good. Not to be a dick but even if we qualify for a bowl game this year, it'll be a really low end one. I feel bad for the kid but we need to start seasoning Shortell for the next couple of years as we get stronger and stronger.

I agree Jeff. There was no reason for him to run anyway as Kirkwood was running well.

Seasoning Shortell is not going to get us to a better bowl game any sooner. There is an even chance that Phillip Nelson will be the QB over Shortell next year as it is. The best thing the Gophers can do for the future is to win now. Not groom guys for the future. Grey has proven himself and steadily improved and no Kirkwood is nowhere near as good of a running threat as Gray.

Gray did everything asked of him. But the thing is they change the whole offensive scheme when he's out. All that QB running stuff goes out and they open up the offense more. I don't know why they don't throw more with Gray in there. He was wild in the opener, then he seemed to settle down, but it's like they don't trust his passing any more. Let him air it out and see if he's up to it.

So much love for Gray, I don't get it.

Carter's tackle saved the day. Sometimes one big play makes the difference. Winning is good.

Kinda torn on this one.
I love Grays talent level, think you need him on the field to be a difference-maker when he can.
We've geared our attack to his game, hard to change things mid-stream.
I'm a Phil Nelson guy, and I agree that he is considered to be the "next" guy.
Shortell is a great weapon to have in the wings. Can get it done when needed. He will handle things well until Gray returns.
Because thats what I see happening. We'll go back to Gray (right or wrong) and play this thing out.
Then install a new attack next year around Nelson.
Shortell (unfortunately for him) is "that" guy everyone wants and needs ... dependable and ready at all times, but you seldom plan on giving him the keys at the start of the night.
I'm ok with however we go. I trust Mr Kills take on it.

It seemed like the coaching staff had little faith in Gray's passing, and short of the jittery first half in Vegas I can't think of why. Gray is only a running threat if the defense believes he might pass, and yesterday he gave little indication that he would.

But that's what i'm getting at. Every one of you admits that the coaching staff has no confidence in his passing game. They obviously don't have the same thoughts on Shortell. Let HIM play and see where it gets us. It would be different if Gray wasn't senior.

Nelson is redshirting this year, right? If Shortell continues to play like this, It would be hard to see Nelson coming in next year and replacing him, as a redshirt freshman. We may not see Nelson be the starter until 2015 for his junior and senior year. Patience.

Perfectly aware where Nelsons at.
Wasn't moving him into any role, just talking ....
Its an interesting plot.
Glad we have options.

I think they're trying to redshirt Nelson, but now he's just one play away from being in the game and having that redshirt burnt.

After watching the B10 in the non-conference, I think the Gophers could win more than a couple of conference games this year. There's something to be said for being 3-0, building some confidence, and learning how to win. We won't have any reason to think we can't compete with most of the teams in our conference this year.

Compete, yes. Win, not yet, against the big boys. We aren't quite there yet athletically but we are getting closer.

What we HAVE to do is take care of our business. By that, I mean, no dumb penalties and keep the TO's down as far as possible. Of course, every team says that, but we have to live it to stand a chance.
