It's really depressing man. How people like Kill and Grandpa Sports can say "Claeys is a lock for the job" just baffles my mind. We show we have the talent to compete but the leadership, on the field, is completely missing.

And, to be honest, Kill didn't really have it either. He was better, I'll give him that.

I'll be honest with you. I think they should give Claeys the job at least for a couple of years. I'm not saying he's the best coach ever, but here's the reasons.

1. We have a really good recruiting class coming in next year, and maintaining this staff is our best chance of retaining most of the class. Some services say it's about top 30 in the nation, which is very strong for us.

2. I feel this staff is very good at coaching fundamentals into players. Nothing is more frustrating than watching a team that can't tackle or block. I don't see that much when I watch the Gophers anymore. The Brewster era - yikes. We are starting to get better athletes, and if they get the same coaching the last group of players received, we will keep improving IMO.

3. We have played UM and OSU head to head the past two weeks and we were VERY competitive. Should have won the UM game and save for a couple big plays, would have been right in the Buckeye game to the end. This is with 8 starters being out injured currently.

4. I think Claeys is less conservative in nature than Kill was. He blitzes a lot on D and is pretty creative about it. I have often grown frustrated by the conservative, predictable play calling under Kill. I think with Claeys in charge, he will open up a bit. I would say there has been evidence of this the past two games. Much more first down passing which gives Leidner a better chance to succeed rather than staring at 3rd and 8 after runs on 1st and 2nd down.

5. Finally, who do we think we're going to get that's so much better? This is Minnesota. I saw a headline of an article the other day comparing the openings at MN and Illinois and wondering which was a better job. That's the level we're perceived at, and I know what I think of Illinois's program.

Obviously, game situation coaching/time management need to improve immensely. In the end though, this is the type of staff we will continue to grow with. We aren't going to get top 10 recruiting classes here. We need coaches that will pull the players potential out of them by playing sound fundamental football.

Drew, while I do agree with a LOT of what you say, the very last point is the where that dooms it for me. Claeys is no spring chicken when it comes to football. Those in game/clock management mistakes are a killer. He was Kill's right hand man for that kind of stuff for years and he appears to be clueless when the game is on the line.

He's been fantastic with the D. I would LOVE to keep as a coordinator but I don't trust him as the HC.

The problem with the team has nothing to do with Claeys----we have very little talent on the offensive side of the ball and will that change next year? Our TE is almost elite, Mays is a 2nd/3rd starter on a normal team, and RBs are average. We went against the most talented team on the planet at their place and minus the pick 6 were in the game.

Our defense has played very well against TCU, Michigan, and now OSU. They were on the field for 2/3 of the game against OSU.

Claeys and Kill's staff can coach (especially defense) but they need to recruit some skill players for the offense (very offensive) side.

Leidner has truly stunk at times this year but there was more help on offense last year at every level (Cobb, Maxx, Fruechte)

That was really deflating. Would've been nice to get on the board there.

Leidners GOTTA keep some of those
He could have a hundred yards so far if hadn't handed off.

Theyre selling out on the handoff

I was thinking the same thing.

And the biggest problem is ..... you kinda, almost, nearly had enough balls to call the right thing, I mean, you threw the flag and all ... so why NOW back out like the scared old weenie you are?
Hate how lately, its like "well, the crowd didn't seem to like what we did there, so, heres a different call"
Used to be ... "hey, shut up, calls been made"
I liked those days better.

Anyone see the Arkansas receiver on Saturday ... game clock winding down, its fourth down and a ton, he catches ball short of first down.
Here is what drives me crazy about sports sometimes.
This kid, little known, probably wont move on to Sunday ball, probably will always be known for just this one play ....
But what does he do?
Its fourth down. He can't make the first down on his current path. So .... he wildly laterals ball back towards the area where most of his teammates are.
It luckily ends up with a teammate, the teammate uses the confusion and the second chance at life ... to reach first down yardage on the other side of the field.
Please give me kids like that.
Please let more of them advance to higher levels of play so that we can watch them.
During this year of so many idiotic plays ... this kid reinstilled my entire faith in sport. He gave me hope again that there are actually young people out there learning the games, and thinking about new ways to succeed.
We've come to accept idiots who run out of bounds when they need to eat time off the clock.
We've come to accept knotheads who don't know the rules, who don't know when clocks run or start, or what plays stop the clock, etc etc etc.
Do you know how many times we have watched Gopher QBs the last five years get to the end of games, in desperation mode ... they get to fourth down ... and do you know how many times we have seen those Gopher QBs throw into the ground on 4th down?
Its been wayyyyy too many times to count. Its the simplest thing in sports, the knowledge that if THAT CURRENT PLAY doesn't continue, then that current game is lost.
And there will stand our Gopher QB, with that goofy look on his face, when he realizes the ball just turned over and the game is over.
And apparently nothing is said, nothing is learned, nothing is taught, because it happens, over and over and over again.
IF YOU RUN OUT OF OPTIONS FOR A CLEAN SHOT AT A RECEPTION ....... DO NOT GROUND THE BALL ..... TOSS IT INTO THE AIR WHERE SOMEONE, ANYONE, GOD PLEASE ANYONE .... COULD POSSIBLY COME UP WITH IT. Why? Because if you do, something good MAY happen.
Thank you Arkansas receiver, thank you. You have reinvigorated my hopes. Maybe someday we will recruit guys who know the game like you do.

I hadn't seen it, but thanks to Google, I found a clip. That was an amazing play. Athletic ability is important, but Brains count for something too.

Claeys 3 year deal

Does that include requiring him to take Clock Management 101

Not happy. Worrying about this year's recruiting class is short sighted. They needed to pick someone who knew how to run every aspect of the program. Claeys has a good sideline demeanor and the clock fiasco not withstanding did a solid job on the sidelines. If your going to turn a major D1 program over to someone, he should have a longer resume than that. Don't get me wrong. I hope he becomes the greatest coach in Gopher history. I think John Gutekunst II is the more likely scenario. Then we start from square 1 again in 3 years.

At least give him a gold plated watch now instead of waiting to give it to him when he leaves (or is fired).

Was it really necessary to move this fast on giving him the job and a multi year contract?

Did Kill have/has that much clout with the President?
