So which Cosgrove did we get, the one that had success at Wisconsin or the one with a bad defense at Nebraska?

People forget that the defense at Nebraska was fine until his last year when everything fell apart. I think that had more to do with the state of the recruiting and the direction the head coach was taking the program than anything Cosgrove did.

Cosgrove became a target for most Nebraska fans. He wasn't good initially. in fairness his next 2 teams improved. His last team was the worst in Nebraska history. Many felt that Callahan could've kept his job if he would've fired Cosgrove. He was even made fun of by opposing QB's. Chase Daniel who admittedly can be a punk claimed facing Nebraska was like playing a high school team that kept in the same defense the entire game. There were numerous problems at Nebraska under callahan but Cosgrove was definitely one of the biggest when he left. His last team ranked 114 out of 119 in points allowed.

Gophers football coach Tim Brewster canceled a trip to Nashville for a college coaching convention to stay home and continue working to fill the offensive coordinator job.
Brewster said he talked to a number of people over the phone and remains on course to fill the position quickly, perhaps by early this week. Brewster reportedly offered the job to Oklahoma quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel, but Brewster denied the report.
Heupel, 30, is a former Sooners quarterback who coached this year’s Heisman Trophy winner, Sam Bradford. He is presumably still on Brewster’s list.

By all accounts, a rising star in coaching ranks.
Bradford's game owes a lot to him. I'd love that hire.
There might be a chance, it'd be closer to home for Josh.

It doesn't take long to figure out Jedd Fisch has a plan. Nothing that's happened from the time he convinced Steve Spurrier to let him be a graduate assistant has occurred by chance.
Every lesson has been saved for the day when he could run his own offense. Now, at 32, he has his chance as the Gophers' offensive coordinator.
"I am thrilled,'' said Fisch, who coached receivers under head coach Mike Shanahan in Denver last season. "That's why I took the job. I could have taken other jobs, where I would not have been calling plays, where I would have been coaching a position. ... This is the job where I can, along with our staff, develop an offensive game plan.''
Fisch is a New Jersey native who went to school at Florida specifically because he wanted to get on the field and learn from Spurrier. That took some doing.
"I had to scratch and claw, scratch and claw,'' Fisch said.
At Florida he took notes on how Spurrier worked with quarterbacks, notes he still has today. At his next job, working defensive quality control for the Houston Texans, he learned the fundamentals of defense from Dom Capers, and ways to attack defenses.
Baltimore? In four seasons there -- two spent working with quarterbacks -- he learned from Brian Billick.
Last year in Denver he worked with Broncos passing game coordinator Jeremy Bates -- his best friend in coaching -- and learned how to assemble a game plan. All that accumulated knowledge will now enter his own playbook.
"This is my first time as coordinator, calling plays,'' Fisch said. "I hope I can take everything I've learned and make it my own.''
The Gophers signed him to a two-year contract that could be worth a total of $650,000. He has a $200,000 base salary from now through Feb. 15, 2010. If he's still on staff as of March 1, 2010, he gets a $125,000 bonus. The second year of the deal calls for a $325,000 salary.

This doesn't sound like the big hire that Brewster said he would get. This guy might be good, but I'm confused in what he is really trying to do with that offense. Other teams that run the spread offense still have a running game without having a power running coach

I think the problem is that guys with more serious credentials come up here, look at the prospective salary and say thanks, but no thanks. Ted Roof left for almost triple his Gopher salary. As the D coordinator at Auburn he makes almost as much as the head coach here.

The Gophers just signed a home-and-home contract to play USC starting in 2010.
Nothing like jumping in with both feet.

Can someone please explain how Willie VanDeSteeg did not get a combine invitation while more than 30 other defensive ends did? That's unbelievable to me! Just compare his production (and college career) against a few other Big 10 defensive ends who did get the invite....

Michael Carter reversed field at the last minute and opted for the Gophers. He brought a 3 star defensive tackle teammate with him.

That is great news. I heard over the weekend that Brewster was in Fla still recruiting and he might get a suprise signing, but never thought it would be someone that had given a verbal already

What is also significant is that Brewster did pull in 5 of the top 6 in state recruits. Hopefully this is a good omen heading into the recruiting war for Seantrel Henderson.
