The main thing is to bring in another recruiting class like next years. That can put us at the level of the team that just waxed us. Bring in a 3rd one in a row and we start to compete with the big boys.

First, my congrats to K.U. & their fans.  They were the better team (as expected) and deserved to win.

- I knew we were in trouble when it was 14-14 and Kansas had the ball.  The officials flagged us first for a "sideline interference" penalty, and then for a very ticky-tack pass interference call on Steve Davis.  If they called the whole game that tight, then the Jayhawks should have at least a dozen holding calls.  By the time we really recovered from that series, it was 28-14.  However, it ultimately did not decide the outcome.

- We continue to commit too many stupid personal foul penalties.  Small's late hit on Reesing was mostly frustration I think, but really dumb.  Those penalties MUST stop next year.

- Interesting look at the new offensive line.  No DJ Burris, Dom Alford or Ryan Orton.  Three guys who started most of the year.  Meinke at LT, Stommes at RT and Wynn moving over to LG didn't seem like much of an improvement, especially in the running game.  The new OL coach may be trying to make his mark, but our line just isn't capable of taking over the line of scrimmage.  Next year should be provide some big time battles for starting spots.  Right now there are four new guys coming in (5 if you count Carufel) and I expect they'll all get a fair shot at unseating the current players.

- It took WAY too long to get Sherels off of Briscoe.  Sherels got eaten alive.  And why play so far off?  Let's see...Briscoe is bigger, taller, and stronger.  Speed was the only thing not to their advantage!  I'm not sure what the coaches were thinking even attempting that matchup.  Simmons is your all-conference cornerback!

- One win last year to seven wins and a bowl this year?  I'll take it.  But next year, the minimum is nine wins.  Anything less is a disappointment.  Kansas is a good football team, and we need to be at least that good next year.

- We had a hard time with the pitch man on their option.
- I thought Stoudermire looked good on kick returns.
- 3 of 13 on Third-Down Conversions = not getting it done.
- The Kansas LB's had a really nice game.
- Lee Campbell is alright against a team like Wisconsin, but he seems too slow against teams like Kansas.

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND GO GOPHERS!

Good report Karl, I always enjoy your point of view.

For bringing in a new coach to run better, they did a poor job scoring from the 2 yd line running 3 times. The radio announcers kept saying all game long that it looked like they knew exactly what plays the Gophers were running

Glad at least one of us got to see the game.  And it's not that I'm too cheap for the Charter sports tier.  Far as I can tell, Charter doesn't even offer the NFL Network!

They don't Matt. They used to carry it, but dropped it about 4 years ago

I believe the only other Minnesota kid playing in that game is Bryce McNeil.  He's a four star WR who will also announce at this game.  He will choose between Minnesota, Clemson, Colorado,  & Oregon.

Another kid playing (and announcing) this weekend is Cornerback Michael Carter (little bro of Tyrone Carter).  He brought along his Minnesota hat, along with one's from Florida & West Virginia.

I was thinking this was the Army game, but that one is Saturday. Any Gophers in that game?

You're right, Fargo.  I got things mixed up.  McNeil & Carter are playing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.   Also, Michael Carter is a cousin to former Gopher Tyrone Carter (not a brother).

Alipate & Ra'Shede Hageman, a TE from Minneapolis (and Minnesota recruit) are playing in the ESPN Under Armour game.

Thanks Karl. I just saw this morning about McNeil and Carter. I think it is good seeing 4 recruits playing this weekend. That bodes well for the team getting those kind of kids.

Last night on ESPN, they had a skills contest with the UA team. It was fun to watch and Alipate was 1 of the QB's. He looks like a big kid. Did I read that he might be switched to LB?

Gophers announce that Mike Dunbar has resigned. Is that the way it really was or was he asked to leave?

I agree. I wonder if he is leaving due to more money or because he doesn't like working for Brewster? He is after all just making a lateral move

Any way you cut it, moving from defensive coordinator at the University of Minnesota to defensive coordinator at Auburn is not a lateral move.  Toss in the fact that they doubled his pay, and it probably wasn't a very difficult decision.  It sounds like he has ties/family to the southeast.  Auburn probably could have pulled this off with no pay raise at all.

It's official. Brewster hires Kevin Cosgrove to be co-defensive coordinator with D-Backs coach Ronnie Lee.

I don't like the co-coordinator aspect of this. In the Pioneer Press this morning Tom Lemming stated that Cosgrove is one of the best assistant coaches in the country at recruiting. From that aspect this could work out pretty well.
