I agree. This team is a decent QB away from being good and a shoe in for a bowl game. I just wonder how long Fleck can roll with Croft before he moves on to Green.

He is actually building something
Agree, a top tier QB effort would be winning us these games.
Gotta find one

Talk me off the ledge here guys. I have only been following Gopher football for about the past decade. I was aware, on a peripheral level, of the Mason years and I knew we typically had some really good RB's and a handful of other good players - but in the time I've really watched games and paid attention I see the same pattern:

They do pretty well in non-conference games (unless a team like USC or Texas are on the docket) but then can barely hold their own in the Big 10.

Am I crazy to wonder if they belong in the Big 10? I'll say right up front that I couldn't carry on a five minute conversation comparing any of the other conferences so I might be completely off base here (I hope I am). But it just feels like they have been in over their heads for a long time.

As I said - talk me off the ledge.

Mason gets unfairly judged in Gopher lore IMO. He had some really good offenses he just could never pull off a defense. Oddly it was the same timing as Denny Green. We would average 7-8 wins with him and get to decent bowl games with usually an upset or 2. I remember knocking off Penn St in their day and will never forget before the Lloyd kick to beat Wisconsin "don't forget the ax".

I would kill to get to that level consistently again.

Agree one thousand percent with Jeff
We were pretty damn decent under Mason IMO too.
Was just talking about this Saturday night .... Not sure if it's just collateral luck or what, but we are like some sort of Running Back U.
And that made us relevant for awhile.
The B10, if you run the ball well and don't shoot yourself in the foot, you can compete.
I see at least five teams in the B10 who should be more depressed than us Lynn, but maybe that's the one slight optimistic bone I have left, talking.

With a better QB, we beat Iowa by 20!

Still say that this recruit from Ohio will take us to the top!

+1
Mason couldn't recruit the high level WR, QB, Whole Defense you need to win it all but he always developed Oline, RB, and TE.

I like Claeys and Kill too---but they weren't going to get the high level QB, WR, etc. to win it all.....have never seen as good of defense they put together though. Leidner led Offense with no WR last year was the reason we didn't go farther.

Just think how much the scandal cost them this year....lost 4-5 pretty good backups plus many recruits stayed away even with Fleck doing what he could.

My only beef with Mase was that he had look of a coach phoning it in the last couple of years. It almost seemed like once he lost out on the Ohio State job, be lost some of his enthusiasm for the job. Prior to that, he pulled the program out of a shit hole and brought it to respectability.

Not necessarily. He is still coming for his official visit on Dec. 8. We had another recruit decommit and then recommit.

And he ended up on the Big Ten TV broadcasts, where he is an average announcer, IMO!

He reopened after we received a commitment from a transfer.

I would hope that wouldn't scare him off. He really has no real established competition for the job here, unless you consider Tanner Morgan who is a complete unknown. I don't see anywhere else where he will have a better opportunity to step in and take the job.

I heard he participated in a high school party offseason and got into a little bit of trouble and a suspension.
Just weird timing.....signing a JUCO and turning into a soft commit.

Vermontes was with Cal one year and was recruited by Michigan also.

Don't re-watch the Iowa game like I did today.
It'll make you scream
So many opps, with just minimal QB play, to take that game.
Our OL was good. Our routes were good and often open. Our RBs are good.
Our QB play was awful. And then he takes the final play 4th down sack ... And it became atrocious.
Another QB who doesn't understand rules, doesn't understand the GAME.

OK/OKState 35-24

And it's not even halftime

Can only dream of an offense like that in Row-the-boat land

I don't know how the "experts" can believe that guy from USC is better than Mayfield.

I have not seen it yet.
