I'm sure he would have. Apparently Fleck wasn't comfortable with him in that role.

I'm confused. Did Simon leave? A quick internet search just came up with him being promoted at the U.

Read.
I did read and what I read was confusing.

Notice he probably would have stayed indicating he left. And this...

Were they talking about somebody other than Simon? Ciarrocca was the OC right?

Sanford also will serve as quarterbacks coach, the source said, while Simon will be promoted to a co-offensive coordinator role and maintain his job as receivers coach.

That's from the article Sweeney posted. It seems fairly clear to me.

Sanford's title is OC and Simon is co -OC. I assume they will work together, but Sanford is the greater among equals.

I get that so why the subsequent comments stating he probably would have stayed if named offensive coordinator when he did in fact get promoted and appears to be staying. It was the wording of those comments that had me wondering if we promoted him, but he decided to leave anyway because he wasn't made the sole OC.

The co-coordinator conundrum

I’ve seen a lot of hand-wringing over Sanford and Simon being co-coordinators.

Here is my take, which is an educated guess at best and pure conjecture at worst: Fleck needed an offensive coordinator and a quarterbacks coach. Simon fulfills the former, but not the latter. Most quarterbacks coaches in college football are also offensive coordinators, and I think you’d be hard pressed to find a quality candidate willing to give up their title and take a pay cut to simply coach quarterbacks. Promoting Simon to co-offensive coordinator allows Fleck to reward and retain a deserving internal candidate who is an elite recruiter and coach at his position. Hiring Sanford as co-offensive coordinator fulfills the need for a quarterbacks coach and allows Fleck to add a former head coach and experienced offensive coordinator to his staff.

Co-coordinators is not a new concept in college football. Just look at the College Football Playoff. LSU, Clemson, and Oklahoma all have co-offensive coordinators. Ohio State had co-defensive coordinators this season. If I had to guess, I would expect Simon to have play-calling duties, with Sanford contributing to the game plan. But we’ll see what happens.

It's taken a bit for me to say this but it's good that KC is gone. What an absolute dickish move to leave right before the school is playing its biggest game in lifetimes…. and it's a f'n lateral. I'm glad he's gone. He just showed his loyalty.

I would be a little pissed if he left ,when he did, for a HC gig but would understand. He had zero input in Penn State's gameplan, gave no advantage with even player/team building ect…..NOTHING. He just gave us the middle finger. I hope he chokes out at this point.

It's one thing to be the HC and want to be with your new team in their bowl. A lateral is just chickenshit.

Yep. He chose to leave a program on the rise for the same position at Penn State. Had he stayed here I believe he had a better shot at getting head coaching opportunities than he will at Penn State. He probably got a nice raise. Didn't Fleck's staff get raises when he signed his extension?

Probably took the job because the old PSU offensive coordinator got fired at Mississippi State. May have figured he'd get canned and may go back. Got the raise and the job instead of the old OC.

It's official. Antoine Winfield Jr. is entering the NFL draft. Can't say as it should surprise anybody. He would have been foolish not to.

Looks like the defense will provide us with the first true test of Fleck's recruiting and development. This is the first time Fleck has had to replace a lot of key players on any one unit in his short time here.

Wait, I don't understand.
Are you talking about offense?
What happened?
Is Fleck Defensive coordinator?
You're making it sound like he is.
What unit is this you refer to?
Why are you calling his time short?

More tomorrow.

I pointed out the awkward wording of a prior post being confusing and it was. I just asked for clarification. Somebody got their undies in a bunch because I dared to call their post confusing.
