1977
I was a snot-nosed HS sophomore sitting in a tractor that Saturday when we beat Michigan
Nursing bruises from my game the night before
One of the most awesome days in our sports history, sadly (they are so far apart)
If you tell me on that day, we would get no more of those, and we'd be STILL be talking about it when I was 60 …. I woulda freaked, and thought you were crazy.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin inserts their best QB recruit ever and he's flawless as they stomp Illinois
(then he tests positive for Covid today)
Just a frustrated Gopher follower today, sorry.

That's exactly right. And why it's hard to believe Fleck would be ok going into a game in a limited season with an 18 yard punter.

All the positivity in the world won't make a situation like that better. If they found out late, that's still crazy.

I think we are getting a little too hung up on the punter thing. The problem was absolutely on the defensive side of the ball. Pretty much from Michigan's second drive on, you could tell from the first play that they were going to score.

Rossi has his work cut out for him. There are no preseason human sacrifices on the schedule that allow Rossi to correct things without getting burned too badly in the process. The Gophers graduated a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball. Rossi has a couple of years of alleged grade A Fleck recruits to rebuild the D. He turned it around on a dime two years ago. Let's hope he can do it again.

An 18 yard punt or running a fake because the punter sucks puts too much pressure on a sieve defense.

I get the field position aspect of it, but that doesn't account for the total lack of fight put up by the defense. Stevenson had one 18 yard punt. He also had a 46 yarder and averaged 35 for the game despite the one shank.

The fake was just a dumb ass decision by Fleck. If he just hits one for his game average, he puts Michigan on their side of the 50 instead of inside the Gophers 30.

They likely score either way. Fake was dumb though and I think the play was worse than the idea.

It's a typical day though. Get destroyed and the media take is this

Our beloved boys had no chance. Lost 4 defensive guys to the NFL and 2 backups to graduation. Meanwhile the big baddies came in trotting 4 freshman meanies on the OLine and a really good QB who was starting his first game ever. What can we really expect from our young guys????

The punter thing just floors me
Give me a half hour and I could round up a kid enrolled at the U that could punt a ball for you
Then, you tell everyone you don't have a punter. and then act all surprised when they sniff out your fake punt attempt?
Harbaugh probably thought he was a genius figuring that one out
Terrible timing, terrible prep for a situation that you knew might kill you in a very big game
Everyone keeps saying, first game, yadda yadda …. CFB is a different animal
You can't hide from big losses, no matter when they happen, its not a 16 game schedule

Lets face it
We beat them here, in 1977
Seriously. Let that sink in awhile. 1977.
Until we stop having those embarrassing stains on our records, we need to stop thinking we are any good.
It doesn't condemn the kids we have now who weren't born then, I get it, but it describes the programs.

I can make one call and get them a punter from the JUCO ranks. Robens Beauplan from East Central CC in Mississippi. In 12 games as a JUCO punter he's averaged 44.2 with 27 kicks inside the 20. In every game this season he's had a punt of 55-or-longer. Can also kick a field goal in a pinch.

was fun to see the Rams punter last night … RUN the game
Controlled momentum all night
When the Bears thought they'd get field position, nope. He'd boom one
When they thought they'd get out of trouble, nope, he'd coffin corner em.
Its a helluva weapon, and overlooking it is stupid as a coach/team/program.

I don't think it was overlooked. The starting punter was out and Stevenson was forced into action.

Will it be a feast

Or a struggle

at a program with (supposedly) a really bad defense (Maryland) Friday?

We can add Kamal Martin to the list of ex Gopher rookies making an impression in the NFL. He came back from the IL and the Pukers inserted him into the starting lineup. He made 6 tackles including one for loss.

Is there any word on whether any of the 3 kickers who were out last Saturday will be able to play Friday? Or the right side of the offensive line?

Gophers cornerback Benny Sapp III has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

The Eden Prairie native announced his decision Thursday on Twitter, writing he is open to recruitment. He is a former three-star recruit.

Sapp played in all 13 games as a freshman and appeared in 11 as a sophomore. The son of former Vikings player Benjamin Sapp II mostly contributed to the Gophers special teams. He did not play in this past Saturday's 49-24 loss to Michigan.
